Elina snorted disdainfully as she approached the shimmering barrier of the feral. No signs of life, not even sentries to patrol. It was like an open invitation to get invaded. This would be far easier than she had assumed.
As clever as Niko thought himself, he still wasn’t above leaving a trail behind, especially when he’d been spooked. How he’d found this feral was still a mystery, but it ultimately didn’t matter. She was here now, and he was off licking his wounds. Soon enough he’d be out of the mansion, relegated to a lesser status, married off like he should have been years ago.
What use was he even? Why her father kept him around, and in contention for succession no less, was another mystery. He wasn’t strong, he wasn’t popular, he was nothing.
Well, it didn’t matter anymore. It was time to wrap up this little game of theirs.
Bracing herself, she slid through the edge, a mild strain in the back of her mind.
Not terrible. It might be a bit harder to muster her strength here, but only just. Given the lack of guards, this one didn’t know what they were doing, completely unable to leverage their power even in their own territory.
The wind changed directions, ruffling her thick fur and carrying it to the feral.
Well, at least they’d figured that part out. They’d have to be completely inept if they couldn’t even tell when someone was intruding. Still, that worked out perfectly for her.
Finding a suitable tree stump along the border, Elina squatted over it. An acrid scent filled the air. She padded lightly to a nearby shrub, doing so once more.
This would drive them nuts. Ferals would go crazy over this kind of provocation. Big and dumb, they’d charge right at her, which was exactly what she wanted. On this battleground, even with a disadvantage in territory, she could wipe the floor with anyone from her own generation.
Tongue lolling in amusement, she continued to mark every bush, stump and rock she could see.
Elina glanced over her shoulder at the incensed growl, the big mutt’s eyes twitching in unbridled anger.
Ah, a male. He was big, sure. But that didn’t mean much here.
She turned to him, her lips pulled back in a sneer.
Well, look at the little punk. What’s the matter? Don’t like me marking your territory?
Staring into his eyes, she raised her tail high, smirking as she marked the ground again. His eyes grew even wider as he shook in rage.
That’s right. It’s mine now.
Predictably, the feral mutt charged right at her. Teeth flashed as he howled, snow kicking up as he raced closer.
Bracing herself low, she snarled, ready to meet him.
Just as he drew nearer, his maw lashing out to bite her snout, she jumped back, leaving him snapping at nothing but air. Before he could recover, she lunged forward, ramming her reinforced body into his, sending him tumbling away.
Panting in laughter at his stunned expression, she waited patiently for him to get up from the pile of snow he’d rolled into.
First time against someone tougher than you?
Shaking off his surprise, he circled her warily, his hackles rising as he growled. Turning her body to keep herself oriented to him, she mockingly watched his little display of intimidation.
Again, he lunged forward, this time coming in low to snap at her foreleg.
Dumb animals never learned.
Elina hopped back with contemptuous ease, raking her claws against his exposed muzzle and across his sensitive nose. He yelped and fell back again.
Pathetic. You can be the pack bitch after I break you.
The air stilled. He bristled, his growl growing deeper as his eyes blazed in anger.
With another roar, he leapt forward, his legs blurring as he charged straight at her.
Oh? Perhaps not so useless after all. Pushed to the edge, even ferals could tap into some of their native power. Of course, that wouldn’t be enough.
Same thing again?
Even with his speed, she still evaded his snapping jaws. Hopping onto her hind legs, she crashed down onto him with a headbutt to the snout. Instead of knocking him backwards though, her head just rung as if she’d run headfirst into a furry boulder.
Before she could recover her wits, teeth flashed and sank into the nape of her neck. She yelped in surprise as he viciously shook her like a rag doll. He yanked her off her feet and dragged her through the snow.
What?! Get off me! I’ll fucking kill you!
Rolling to loosen his grip, she snapped at his exposed neck. He avoided the strike, digging deep furrows into the snow as he dragged her along, her legs flailing as she yelped and whined.
What was happening? How was he able to do this? To her? She’d beaten more experienced Freiji in their own homes, yet she couldn’t even manage one stupid feral?
Digging her paws into the ground, she found purchase, smashing her skull against his snout. This time the impact felt right, his nose crunching as he yelped in pain.
Did he not know how to reinforce himself? Was it just instinct the last time?
She’d need to get serious.
That’s it, you little bitch. I’m not fucking around with you anymore.
Elina squared off with him, her fangs bared. She snapped her jaws in warning, her growl deep and menacing.
It felt sluggish, channeling her will into her reinforcement. What should have been like pouring water through a sieve now felt like she was pushing clay through a straw. When she’d first stepped into his territory it hadn’t been nearly as oppressive.
Elina took the offensive, charging right at him as he braced. Lowering herself, she rammed directly into him, trying to knock him off balance. The impact was far harder than it should have been, her own shoulder aching at the force. He barely moved a few feet, pivoting quickly and snapping at her head, nearly catching her ear. As she prepared to counterattack, his claw raked her face. With a yelp, she backed up quickly, right eye clenched shut in pain.
He didn’t advance. Taking slow steps, he circled her, putting himself between her and her escape route.
This wasn’t right. Niko had tricked her. No feral was this strong.
Back off! I’m warning you! I’ll kill you!
Tail tucked between her legs, she growled at him, ears flat against her skull.
