The verdant grasslands of Niko’s territory rippled in the breeze, the warm gust traveling from far away, bringing with it the scent of summer. The fresh smell of new rose blossoms and a hint of citrus of berries heralded the season. It ruffled his elegant silver fur, the babbling stream beside him cool to the touch as he walked along the edges of his territory.

Within this space, he was king. Nothing happened without him knowing, or wanting, it.

A silvery fish, its bright scales flickering in the sunlight, flit along his paw, its companions following after. A solitary eagle soared overhead, its shape stark against the clear blue sky.

With a puff of his nostrils, the creatures evaporated into whisps of smoke, swirling in a myriad of colors, before dissipating back into nothingness.

Not really in the mood for this season, Niko shook his head, the landscape shimmering to match his desires. The grass dulled, leaves on the trees turning bright shades of yellow and red, and a cool breeze now carried the smell of ripe apples.

Lapping at the stream, larger shapes arose beneath the waters. No longer the size of fingernails, fish the length of his arm struggled to swim upstream, some leaping from the waters as though trying to fly.

With a casual snap of his jaws, he caught one such fish, his teeth digging into the flesh as it struggled desperately to escape. The fight eventually drained from the doomed creature until only its mouth moved, opening and closing as if pleading for its life.

Settling down into the grass, paws holding the fish in place, he tore at its flesh, swallowing the tasty morsels and lapping at the blood covering his snout.

It was so much better here than in the human world. Shaping reality with nothing but a fleeting thought, here he could do whatever he wanted. No silly tests, no etiquette, and best of all, no Elina.

Of course, that didn’t stop her from encroaching on his territory if he didn’t respond to her. Like a bull in a shop, she went where she wanted, and nothing short of a full-scale conflict would deter her.

His long tongue lapping at his snout, cleaning off the remnants of his snack, he gazed at the tree line which demarked the edge of his territory. Beyond that lay the wandering realm, the twisting space where reality was fickle and far more resistant to change. In this space at least, it was controlled. And out there, somewhere, was this new Freiji.

Niko yawned, his jaw wide as he pondered what else he could do to find them.

The chorus, the song of the Freiji, was like a roaring stream, each voice joining in a swirling mass, nearly indiscernible from one another. No beginning and no end, it was nearly impossible to track a new voice through it, even for Lukas, the one most attuned to it. Just being able to sense a new voice was accomplishment enough for most Freiji. Of course, for Lukas, it was the bare minimum for succession.

Nearly impossible didn’t mean completely impossible though.

Unbeknownst to Lukas, Niko had far more experience navigating the chorus than he suspected. Navigating, and more importantly, hiding. If Lukas had taught him anything, it was to always keep a card or two up his sleeves. Of course, that advice would eventually bite his father, regardless of how this race went.

Ears perked up, Niko sat on his haunches, listening to the sudden change in the chorus. So subtle that most would miss it, that new voice rose in song.

In the human world, the new Freiji’s call had been muted, as though traveling through multiple walls thick with insulation. Here, closer to the source, it could tell him far more than anyone would guess.

Even amongst the other voices, it stood out, if one knew how to listen. A twin song, a strange occurrence, echoed in harmony with itself. Rising and falling, as though unsure of how to properly fit in.

Not a planned awakening then. A wild Freiji, one born outside the established houses and families. He had already surmised as much as no new awakenings had been authorized by the elder councils. No Freiji had been born since his generation within the families, all to protect the balance between them. Like a hidden blade, a new Freiji could be used at just the right moment, to tip those precariously balanced scales in their favor, finally ending the families’ deadlock.

The chord held long, far longer than it really should have. Like it didn’t know how far away the chorus was, simply crying into the night with all its might to be heard.
