Hana harumphed once more, turning the car back into the driveway. Not only was she still annoyed with Kaylie dressing so provocatively, but she still seethed at the implication that Hana couldn’t pull off something like that.
She absolutely could pull it off. Just because everyone called her ‘mom’ jokingly, didn’t mean that she didn’t like to feel pretty and desired on occasion.
It just really wasn’t her style. If she was going to go all out, their eyes would roll out of their heads in shock. There was a special slinky dress she’d never actually worn reserved for just that kind of occasion. It was supposed to be for her prom ... had she actually gone. Or been asked.
Hana grumbled as she put the car in park.
Being the de facto ‘mom’ of the other three had left her love life sadly lacking throughout high school. And college. And since. No one wanted to date a single mom.
Shaking in irritation, Hana patted angrily at the steering wheel, soft slaps on the old material landing with hardly any force as threw her tantrum.
Gripping the wheel firmly enough to turn her knuckles white, Hana took a deep breath, letting all the accumulated tension out.
With the moment passed, she smoothed the hair that had shaken loose during her little fit. Checking herself in the mirror, she rubbed the edges of her lips where her lipstick had smudged. While perhaps a little flushed, she seemed largely presentable.
Truthfully, it wasn’t Kaylie’s teasing that had gotten her all riled up. It certainly hadn’t helped, but it wasn’t the source of her annoyance.
Ms. Aberdeen had left the house and all she could save in her accounts to them, but the costs of sending four kids in total to college, even local, plus keeping up with the mortgage and Kal’s medical expenses, was simply crushing.
On top of it all, she hated her job. Between the hours of busy work, snide remarks from colleagues for perceived slights, and bosses taking credit for her work, it was simply miserable. There was no upward mobility, but she couldn’t quit or they’d fall even further behind on payments and even lose the house.
And, of course, she’d forgotten her presentation materials, needing to turn around half-way just to retrieve them.
One last close-mouthed scream into the confines of the car.
Shutting off the engine, Hana stepped from the car, her heels clacking evenly on the cobbled walkway through the front yard. The barren flowerbed lay beneath accumulated snow, sheltered from the sun by the overhang. The occasional greenish-brown sprout poked its head from the melting snow on the lawn, but otherwise it lay dormant until the spring.
Out of habit, Hana dropped the car keys in the basket by the door, heading into the kitchen that still smelled lightly of cinnamon cakes.
Hopefully they’d all had a chance to eat some, especially Melissa. She was less volatile these days at least. Maybe that game night had knocked something loose from that thick skull of hers. She still wouldn’t talk about it, in typical Melissa fashion, but at least she and Kal weren’t fighting all the time. Shockingly, she’d even spotted them hugging once, though both had played it off as some kind of fight.
