Kal’s stomach sank and his vision swam as he stared into the seemingly infinite abyss below his precariously placed feet, loose pebbles disappearing into that inky void with nary a sound. While his experiences told him that the heavily corded rope secured at multiple locations both on the sheer cliffside and himself could easily hold a multi-ton vehicle, it didn’t make him feel any safer. Every creak of rope summoned horrifying thoughts as he imagined each individual strand groaning and stretching to the limit, before snapping and sending him hurtling to the unfathomable depths of the jagged rocks below.

“Oh my god,” someone cried in delight from somewhere above him with hardly a worry in her voice. “Doesn’t this feel amazing? It’s like ... being free. Able to see the whole world. Unbound. Tunnen rauhaa.”

Kal’s mind raced, desperate to deny the existence, or lack thereof, of anything below him. It grabbed hold of the first thing that came to mind; his nearly nonexistent mastery of the Finnish language.

“Th-that’s, uh, that means ... you feel like a ... treat?”

Inna’s clear laughter let him know that he’d somehow messed that translation up, but as long as it kept his mind off the creeping intrusive thoughts that were growing increasingly curious as to what he might find at the bottom of the canyon, then that was good enough.

“Peace, silly. I feel at peace.”

Kal’s neck creaked like a rusty hinge as he gazed upward. He immediately wished he hadn’t.

While Kal’s fingers were frozen into a permanent death grip against the cracks in the mountain wall, Inna leaned against the rope as though she were peacefully floating on a placid lake, thoroughly unconcerned that the only thing keeping her safe was the belief that the metal piton jammed into the rock would hold her.

She looked like an angel, finally free to be who she always was.

Sunlight glinted from the blonde hair that escaped her knit cap, blowing freely in the calm wind even as that same breeze tried to worm its way into Kal’s bones and tear him from the mountain. He could only imagine the serene smile that graced her ruby lips as she basked in the radiance of Mount Waris.

... the same place that provided no warmth or comfort to Kal. He might as well have been a tick on the side of the beast that was the mountain. Ancient and solitary, towering over the snowy fields below, it was a creature that welcomed none but those who were worthy.

Kal was a lot of things; headstrong, more than a little stubborn, and head over heels for Inna, but worthy was perhaps not the word he would have chosen for himself. Even with his feigned love of bouldering and mountain climbing, the countless hours training his fingers to nearly dig into solid rock for purchase, and the dozens of climbs he’d been on with Inna, he would never understand or share this longing of hers.

“Only two more days up here,” Inna said forlornly as she stared off toward the coastline, barely cresting on the horizon. “I don’t think I’ve ever slept so well.”

The thought of another night tied to the hanging cots each had strapped to their packs made his teeth clack. Had he been able to stomach anything more than a handful of nuts and some protein bars, he’d have returned said offerings to the mountain as his stomach, as well as his brain and other organs, rebelled against his heart’s one-sided decision to follow Inna once more into the dizzying heights of oblivion.

“Uh, how much further?” Kal asked as he swallowed the bile rising in his throat.

Inna cupped her hands to her lips, calling out to the guides dozens of feet ahead of them. Her voice seemed to be swallowed by the howl of the winds but still stopped their ascent as they hollered back to her. What little he could make out barely made sense; they were probably shouting in Finnish. That, or the altitude made even the simple concept of language an indecipherable mess in his head as most of his brainpower was dedicated to not falling to his doom.

“Almost there,” Inna shouted down, her face a vision of contentment even as she stared down to the endless drop below them. “Another hundred meters and we can take a lunch break. You hungry? I brought some of those waffles you like.”

Kal prayed that his smile seemed genuine and not the horrendous grimace he imagined it looked like.

“Yeah, I could eat.”

Inna gave him her trademark dazzling smile, complete with little dimples on her cheeks and tiny wrinkles on her button-nose as it scrunched in delight. Those blue eyes of hers, the color of a cloudless summer sky, sparkled with the unbridled joy she surely felt.

If only he could share even a fraction of that feeling. Instead, a growing sense of doom gnawed at his frayed nerves.

“Um, Inna? What, uh, what’s that?”

Perhaps it was a combination of his anxiety, oxygen deprivation, and his mind’s attempt to rationalize the impossible, but the inky clouds that spread over Inna’s shoulder seemed to claw their way out of the stillness of the air like tentacles slithering across the immaculate sky.

Panicked cries echoed from above, the sounds of hammers furiously ringing out as they struck metal pitons deeper into the mountainside.

“Anchor yourself,” Inna cried out, her eyes wide with fear. “Hurry Kal!”

Kal tore his gaze from the sky, shaking hands struggling to free his hammer. His foot slipped against the wall, as though it had become solid ice, slamming him against it. The hammer receded into the darkness below as Kal latched onto the rope.
