“Is everything alright?” Natalie asked, worriedly gazing at Kal. He’d been unusually quiet the whole afternoon, barely engaging like he normally would. “Did ... did I do something wrong?”

“No, it’s just...,” he began, before sighing and slouching back into the café couch. “I’m sorry, my head’s just not in the right place for this.”

Glancing around at the noise café, it was hardly a place for a talk, especially if he was feeling down. She got up and tugged at his hand, inclining her head toward the door.

“Come on, my dorm is nearby. We can talk there.”

Although the walk was short, the atmosphere was heavy. Something weighed on him.

“Hey, so, how’s Melissa been?” Natalie asked, trying to get him out of his funk. “Last I heard she was getting lunch with Trent.”

That earned her a reaction, though certainly not one she had been expecting. If anything, it reminded her of her dad anytime Monique brought someone over ... dialed up to eleven. His hand holding hers heated and tensed, his eyes hardened, and the faintest rumbling vibrated her arm. For the briefest moment, she swore the air tasted of iron.

“That got cancelled,” he growled, his eyes laser-focused ahead of him, as though he were staring down something in the distance.

Natalie gulped the saliva in her mouth heavily, her nostrils flaring at how agitated he’d become.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to upset you,” she said softly, rubbing his arm comfortingly. With her head against his arm, the rumbling was even deeper, sending shivers down her spine.

As soon as that strangely oppressive atmosphere had descended, it departed.

“No, I’m sorry. I’m just not in a great mood today,” Kal said, his eyes softening as his grip loosened.

“Well, maybe ... I can help?” Natalie shrunk from his gaze, a glint of something in his eyes both scary and enticing. “Please? Let me help you,” she said softly, pulling his arm toward the dormitory.

Natalie squeezed his hand, casting glances back at him as he followed her silently to her room.

The freshman dorm housed all freshman, with few exceptions, and held two to a room. Thankfully, Natalie’s roommate was out when she unlocked the door. Caroline was alright, a bit bookish, but pleasant enough to be around. But Caroline was the furthest thing from Natalie’s mind currently.

“Please, sit,” Natalie said, gesturing to her neatly made bed.

Shrugging off her coat, she sat beside him, scooting over until her legs warmed his. She placed his hand on her thigh, rubbing her thumb along the back of it. She smiled nervously at him when he didn’t say anything. He simply stared at the ground, that dark mood of his slowly seeping into the room.

“So ... what’s the matter?” she asked.

“I, uh ... saw Inna again,” he said with a grimace, not looking at her.

“Your girlfriend? Er, ex?” He simply nodded at the question. “Did you speak with her?”

Kal shook his head. “I guess ... I still have some mixed feelings about her. She was with her boyfriend. They were at the little music venue that we used to go to...” he trailed off. “I guess ... I guess it’s hard to see her move on. It’s been half a year for her to mourn, but it’s only been a few weeks for me.” He shook his head again. “I’m sorry. This isn’t fair to you.”

“It’s fine—”

“It’s not. You are so sweet, but you deserve someone that can actually commit to you. I’m just ... not ready yet.”

Natalie’s hand shook as her stomach dropped. “Please don’t say that.”

“I’m sorry...”

“No ... it’s ... this doesn’t have to be ... like that.” She desperately thought through the options. She couldn’t go back to hunting. Not after she’d found him. She couldn’t give up this newfound freedom, of being able to gaze up in wonder at the night sky and not worrying about what might happen. She couldn’t give up this sense of belonging, of being with him.
