Chapter 12
Erotica Sex Story: Chapter 12 - In this third installment, we continue Tom Carter's story of coming to terms with his new-found abilities to influence others, discovering other aspects to these powers, and beginning to understand how he came by them in the first place. He finds that his gifts are the accidental byproduct of failed military experiments to enhance the senses and abilities of soldiers. But even if the failures ruined a lot of lives, the prime movers aren't ready to give up, having come so close to success.

I got off the bus a couple of stops early so I could get to my bank’s ATM for the money I needed. I wouldn’t have time in the morning. It made me a little late for dinner.
“You’re usually home earlier. Sit down, I’ll get you some food,” said my mother.
“Traffic problems with the bus?” my father asked, without seeming to be much interested in the answer.
“No, lots of extra orders from people trying to get ready for the holiday parties coming up.”
“Oh, I didn’t realize they had rushes like that. I thought the orders would have been more evenly spaced.”
“So did I, but apparently not.”
We finished dinner and we all helped clear the table. It was Mindy’s turn to help wash the dishes tonight and again I was surprised that she voiced no complaints. This was new and I was curious why. It had nothing to do with that Brain Sponge image I’d left her with; that was only for studying and only when she invoked it with that silly Fonzie mantra. Maybe it just her maturing a little. I’ll have to think more about this.
I read one of the assigned texts on the reading list that --------- had sent and when I couldn’t read any more I went to sleep.
My alarm woke me and it took me a moment to remember what day it was. Friday, so get ready for work. A quick shower, coffee and a bowl of Wheaties, then stand on the bus all the way to the mall.
“Morning, Carter. There’s a few orders there to pick and pack.”
“Okay, thanks. Did you finish with your ledgers?”
“Almost. I’ve probably got a couple more hours to do, but nearly there and just in time. I’ve got an appointment with my accountant on Monday for taxes. So now my weekend’s free. I thought I was going to have to spend it with the books. That’s why I hired you, you know, so I could clear the time to get the books in order.”
“Better you than me,” I said. “I’ll get started on this.”
I spent half an hour boxing the latest orders. Shortly after I started I heard the rapid clacking of a keyboard, which meant Miriam was here.
Sometime later Ted went out to the cluster of mailboxes which served the businesses in this section of the mall and brought back the day’s mail. He separated the orders from the bills and junk mail and had Miriam enter the new orders.
When they were printed he handed them off to me. As yesterday, there were more than usual. We only had another week before the holiday, and I wondered what next week was going to be like. Were we going to be slammed? It might mean I’d have to actually work a full day.
It took me most of the rest of the morning to pack the new orders. I brought them in and started weighing them on the scale. Around noon Ted stretched to get the kinks out of his back. “Carter,” he said, “do you mind if I get my lunch first. I’ve got to get up and move around or my back’s gonna be a mess. I’ve been hunched over those books both yesterday and today and I can feel it tensing.”
“That’s fine. Go out and walk around. I can eat when you get back.”
“I shouldn’t be that long. Miriam usually takes her lunch now, too. You’ll be okay here for awhile?”
“Not a problem. I think there’s a cattle prod in the back if the crowds become unruly.”
He chuckled at that, and said, “That’s the spirit. Okay, you hold the fort.”
He got up at the same time that Miriam closed down the order program and picked up her purse. They left separately and I was alone.
I went back to my office and found the catalog number of the tablecloths I’d selected for the bogus purchase. Back in the front I found a blank order form and filled it out, saying the happy customer named “Cash” had purchased two of these tablecloths for his festive gathering.
I calculated the price of the two items, added tax and deposited the bills in the cashbox, giving myself 47 cents in change so the books would balance. I ripped off the original from the order pad and stuffed it in my pocket -- it would normally be the part given to the customer with his purchase -- and put the carbon on Ted’s desk, because I didn’t know what he did with it after that.
I finished weighing the parcels, then printed the postage and applied the stickers feeling rather pleased with myself. Ted should be back soon, I figured, so I got out the handcarts and piled the boxes on. Now we were ready for the post office run.
The phone rang and I took a phone order. Snarky grill apron, two boxes of cocktail napkins with raunchy sayings, and one tee-shirt, size L, imprinted with “Yes, they’re real”. I got the address info and credit card number and thanked them for their order.
Which Ted took as his cue to come back in. “Feeling better?” I asked.
“Yeah, I am. I just needed to stretch my muscles. Anything exciting happen?”
“One phone order, one walk-in. Other than that, I finished getting the orders ready for the post office. They’re here on the carts.”
“Weren’t you the industrious fellow, then. Thanks. Why don’t you get your lunch and then you can do the post office run. I want to finish up the books.”
“Okay, I’ll do that.” I grabbed my backpack and held the door for Miriam as she returned from her lunch. It was too late to kidnap Karen, so it’s a solo lunch today. I had a sudden craving for a cheeseburger and that led me to the faux “sweet shop” where I’d first encountered Canary. They did a pretty good cheeseburger, and the lunch rush would be mostly over by now.
I sat down at the counter again and ordered. I thought back to Ted’s return. He hadn’t even blinked at the walk-in order, which I was pretty sure was a rare event. He was probably distracted by having to deal with the books. Just as well, fewer questions.
And that was my day. I didn’t see Stan or Canary on my way back, nor were there any Beckham or McGuire sightings. The post office run was routine, and I mostly twiddled my thumbs for the rest of the day, Ted hunched over his books, Miriam clacking away at the old orders.
I did borrow Miriam’s newspaper and looked through the movie listings, jotting down a couple of possibilities that Karen might like.
A little before five Ted threw us both out and told us to enjoy the weekend. I think maybe the two of us were distracting him from his ledgers, and maybe he wasn’t as close to done as he’d told us. His problem, not mine, fortunately.
And I actually got home a little earlier than usual! Time for a quick shower, then a few minutes to relax before dinner.
“So. You have any plans for the weekend?” my mother asked casually as she passed the chicken platter.
“Don’t know yet. Karen and I might go to a movie. Neither of us have really seen one since we went off to school. Too busy.”
“Oh, that’s nice. Tell her I said hi.”
I nodded. In the past the question would have been followed by a series of followups meant to drill down into the relationship details. Thankfully she had dialed that back since I was in high school. She was probably more focused on Mindy’s love life now.
When we’d finished, and the table was cleared, I went upstairs. The movie comment was on my mind, so I called Karen.
“I looked for you at lunchtime,” she said. “You off flirting with the girls at the jewelry kiosk?”
“No, they shot me down. Actually, I had to work a little later ‘cause Ted had to go to lunch first today. It was too late to come find you when my time came to eat.”
“I invited myself along with a couple of the other girls at the bookstore and we ate together. I have never been more bored in my life. Did you know that their favorite lip gloss comes in seventeen shades of red and they’re having the most difficult time deciding which one is right?”
“I feel their pain. No, actually I don’t, but I was being polite. I looked in the paper today and found a couple of movies that don’t look terrible. You still want to do that?”
“If it’ll get me out of the house. What’cha got?”
We talked about the possibilities and finally decided on Apollo 13. She said she could borrow her mother’s car, so she’d pick me up.
Saturday was slow. After breakfast I read some and my dad asked me to mow the lawn. It’s not that big and didn’t take long. I goofed off until after dinner. When it was about time for Karen to drop by I went out and sat on the front steps. The weather had blessedly cooled off some and there was a nice breeze, so I enjoyed it until I saw her turn onto our street.
I walked to the sidewalk as she pulled up. I buckled myself in as she turned to check before she pulled back out into the street.
“You weren’t waiting long, were you?” she asked.
“Nah, I was enjoying the breeze for a few minutes. We don’t have air conditioning in the house so it can get pretty muggy inside.”
“Yeah, I hear you. Ours isn’t cooled either, though my parents have a window air conditioner in their room. I’m a bit jealous. What’s that you’re carrying?”
“Oh, this is a surprise. For later.”
“For me? What is it?”
“Nope. It’s better if we do this later.”
“You’re going to make me wait? You’re a hard man, Carter.”
“Trust me, it’ll be better if we do this later.”
She set her mouth in a firm line that I recognized as her being not on board with something. She’ll get over it.
We found a spot to park and made our way into the theater, stopping for popcorn. I hadn’t been making up a story for my mother, it had been a long time since I’d been at the movies. I think I saw one while I was at school, but that was the only one.
It was a fairly long movie, but we both got caught up in it. I didn’t often see Karen so wrapped up in a story but the drama and the technology and the way they tweaked the engineering to make the spacecraft operable again grabbed her.
When it finally ended there was some scattered applause in the crowded theater, something you don’t often hear.
As we walked out she said, “Wow, I didn’t expect that! That was really cool. I was amazed at how ... primitive the technology was, especially the computers. I may want to see that one again sometime.”
“Yeah, I liked it, too. Where’d we leave the car? Do you remember?”
We found it after only one wrong turn and got ourselves settled. She pulled the key ring out of her purse and started to insert it into the ignition, but I stopped her.
I reached under the seat where I had stowed the paper bag with the dildo. “Before we go, let’s take a couple of minutes. Do you remember when we were having lunch a week or two ago and I told you about the warehouse and all the weird stuff that I encountered there? I said I’d found a shelf full of S&M toys and vibrators and dildos, and you said some of your friends at school had vibrators that they used to deal with the stress?”
“Uh, yeah, I think I remember. Why?”
“I have too much free time at work. It sometimes leads to speculation. I thought that it wasn’t right that you should have to deal with all that stress at school. So I bought you a present.” I handed the bag to her.
She took it from me, a little suspiciously. Still looking at me, she unwrapped the brown paper bag surrounding the box and extracted it. I heard her draw in her breath.
“Oh, my God. Is this ... It looks so ... industrial.”
I was watching her. It was cute, in a way. She didn’t know how to process it, and I could see her turning pink as she turned the box over, examining the illustrations and the descriptive text.
“Tom, I’m not sure how I feel about this. It’s very ... mechanical.”
“Yeah, I went back and forth about this. I wasn’t sure how you’d process something that was so far out of your experience, because it seems so different. But then I thought about how you approached the whole idea of sex when we were starting out.
“You were willing to examine it, experience it, then figure out if it was something that you liked. If I recall, you finally voted in favor of it, even if a few things seemed weird when we first tried them.
“So maybe this is another new thing to try, figure out if it’s something that’ll work for you. Play with it for a while, see if you like it. If you don’t, there’s other things you might like.”
She was silent for a minute, still turning the box in her hands. She finally said, “Does this plug in or is it battery operated?”
“It runs on a couple of C batteries. Oh, nuts! I forgot to get batteries!”
“I’m sure we’ve got some at home. It’s fine.”
She turned to me. “Part of me is still embarrassed by things like this. All the things we’ve done together, and I still get embarrassed. Isn’t that strange? So it may take a little getting used to. But you’re right, I should push myself to try different things, see if I like them or not. Somewhere in the back of my mind I was toying with the idea of getting one of those silver torpedo vibrators, but I kept putting it off, so thanks for giving me that last little push.”
She picked up her shoulder bag and with some rearranging was able to stuff the bag inside. With an embarrassed smile she started the car and headed home. I got a nice kiss when she dropped me off, and the parting comment, “Maybe I’ll get a chance to try this tonight or tomorrow. See you Monday.”
And come Monday I pushed open the door at about nine and found Ted checking over the books, much as I’d left him on Friday. He looked up.
“Morning, Tom. There’s a bunch of orders on the counter there. Get started on those, would you? I’ve gotta finish this up.”
I suppressed a smile. I knew he’d still be working on the books, right up till the last minute. But I thought he was further ahead than he was this time last year.
There were a lot more orders than we typically got on a Monday. I thought folks were gambling on whether they’d get their order delivered in time if they left their orders till this late, but their problem. It took me better than an hour to finish, and there was one order where I suspected that one of the items was in the warehouse, because I couldn’t find it here.
I went out front and weighed each of the boxes, then ran postage for them. I told Ted about the missing item and he nodded, distracted. “I’ll check the warehouse on the way home. Run the rest of them to the post office, okay?” I picked up the keys and trundled the load out to the van. I was back a little more than thirty minutes later.
“Thanks, Carter. Listen, my appointment’s at two, and I think I’m going to be tied up with the accountant for most of the afternoon, and may not make it back here. The books are mostly in order and up to date, but he’s always got questions, so I’ll probably be late. So I want you to lock up today. Here’s a set of keys to the storeroom and the front door. Make sure everything’s locked up tight when you leave. Oh, and lights and PC off, too.”
I told him I could handle that and he turned back to his books, saying over his shoulder, “Take your lunch in about half an hour, okay?”
I read for a while, then saw it was about time, so I grabbed my backpack and left. Ted was putting papers and journals into a cardboard box. Ted called after me, “I’ll leave when you get back.”
I made a beeline for the bookstore because some part of me was decidedly curious about how -- or if -- she’d dealt with the dildo. She’d bring it up if she was ready.
