Chapter 7
November 6, 1005
A nude Erica answered the knock on our bedchamber’s door by unlatching it and opening it a few inches. Lady Kara and Lady Erma, in their normal fashion, barged through the door without an invitation to enter and came to a halt when they saw me in their mother’s bed. When they turned and saw their mother with no clothes, the question of how to tell them about us becoming lovers was solved.
Erica said, “Leave and return in five minutes. By then we should be dressed and ready to talk with the two of you.”
After they left and the door was shut, I asked, “Do they always barge into the room like that?”
“Unfortunately, Yes. I have subtly suggested that they wait until they are invited to enter, but neither of them are very good at picking up on unstated reasons behind subtle suggestions.”
“Yes, I have noticed that on a few occasions, Erica.”
When we were dressed, Erica unlocked and opened the door. The girls arrived with red faces and apologetic demeanors. Erica said, “And now you know why I kept suggesting that you wait until you are invited to enter someone’s bedchamber.”
Kara said, “All you told us was you had somethings to discuss and went to Dad’s study. We had no idea that we would find the two of you here.”
I asked, “Were we obligated to tell you that we decided to change the nature of our relationship?”
Kara’s response was, “No, but it would have been nice to know.”
Erica said, “Kara, get used to Vic being in this bedchamber and in this bed. Last night, we talked about many things. One of those things was our relationship. When he asked me to marry him, and I said ‘yes.’ On Sunday, we will set the date for our wedding.
“There will be many changes in the weeks to come. Some of those changes will affect the two of you.”
Erma asked, “Anything in particular?”
Erica said, “No. However, Vic and I believe both of you need to become more mature in your behaviors and attitudes.
“If the two of you plan to ever marry, you will need to prepare yourselves for managing a household. If you plan on marrying a noble, you will also need to be able to provide good advice on managing your husband’s Duchy or Earldom.
“I have told you about my not being ready to help your father manage his Duchy, when I first came here, and some of the problems my ineptness caused me. I hope to prepare you so you won’t have that problem.”
Erma complained, “Mom, I have fallen in love with Vic and I don’t want any other man. Since you are marrying him, there won’t be any man that I want.”
“Erma, that is just one of the attitudes that Vic and I intend to change. Some noble may offer a merger of households through marriage. If Vic agrees, you will marry whomever, the groom may be.
“Were you and your sister even listening to the conversation last night?”
“Yes.”
“What did the Duke say about his wives?”
“I missed that, Mom.
“What about you, Kara?”
“According to Vic, the King said something about multiple wives. However, according to Father Gallagher, a man can take only one wife.”
Erica looked at me and said, “Sorry, Vic, but I thought my daughters were more aware of how the Church operated.
“Do either of you know what the word ‘dispensation’ means?”
Kara and Erma looked at each other and then shook their heads to indicate ‘no.’
Erica said, “We have sat in church for many years listening to our Catholic Priest tell us that the Holy Bible is God’s book, and in that book, God tells us what is right and wrong. Our Priests tell us that if we do wrong, and that if God does not forgive us, we will be sent to Satan in Hell.
“We know that there are many small sins typically committed by children, and God would not send an innocent child to Hell. There are also the more serious sins that adults commit. According to our Priests, God will forgive our sins if we admit to committing them in the confessional and try to not commit the sins again.
“We all know of men and women who knowingly commit sins and have no remorse for committing what they know are sins. Our Priests tells us that God will not allow those sinners to enter Heaven and will send them to Hell.
“That is what the Catholic Church has its Priests tell us. However, what the Priests say and what they do are two very different things.
“Many Priests commit the sin of greed. One of the things that Cardinals do to obtain money is to sell ‘dispensations’ from God. A dispensation is a document that a sinner can buy from the church that states God has forgiven him for committing sins or gives permission to do something the bible says is wrong. The greater and more numerous the sins, the more it costs the sinner to buy the document.
“Vic told me that King Zonder bought a dispensation for Vic that will allow him to have multiple wives. Do either of you understand what this means for you?”
Once again, they shook their heads No.
I said, “Lady Kara, Lady Erma, let me give you a hint. Your mother will be my first wife and after marrying her I will marry other women.”
I could see Erma’s eye go wide as she realized what her mother had been telling her.
Erma said, “You mean that the two of us can be an additional wife.”
I said, “Yes, Lady Erma. However, why would I want a wife who cannot manage a household? Why would I want a wife who cannot provide me with good advice about managing my Duchy?
“I want more than a woman to warm my bed, Lady Erma, and to give me children as a wife. Right now, neither of you would be an acceptable wife for me. You will have to change if you want to become one of my wives.
“Your mother can guide you in becoming more mature and suitable to being one of my wives. You will just have to do what she says. Now let’s go eat our morning meal.”
Erica and I returned to the study after eating. Once she was settled behind the desk, I said, “Erma will work hard to become one of my wives, Erica. Kara will work also, but I’m not sure that she will want to be one of my wives.”
“Yes, I got that impression also, Vic. However, I also got the impression that she did not want to be given to a strange man to be his wife.
“She has seen and talked with women younger than herself who have married old men. Often, the husbands married them to be bed warmers and hoped they would possibly be the mother of another heir. They described what it is like for them to have their husbands trying to impregnate them. It was not a pleasant time in bed for them, especially if their husband is no longer fertile and refused to admit it. They have told of taking grooms as their lovers, often during their fertile time, as a form of revenge for the beatings they received from their angry husbands.
“Vic, do you believe that God will honor this dispensation?”
“It is more complex than that, Erica. I have read the Holy Bible. It provides great comfort to a soldier. By my interpretation, there are verses in the Holy Bible that conflict with what our Priests say is true. So, what should I believe: what the priests tell us he says or what I read?
“One of the main things that I do believe about the Holy Bible is that God and the son of God have no interest in money. The only ones interested in money are the Priests, Cardinals, and possibly the Pope. I have no faith that their Dispensation Document will allow me to enter Heaven if God believes I do not belong there.”
Erica asked, “Then why do you have it?”
“King Zonder wants me to have many legal heirs. The number of children King Zonder wants me to sire is more than a single woman can bear in a short period of time. Having that many legal heirs means I have to be married to multiple women. Without the dispensation, Father Gallagher will not marry me to anyone other than one woman. Therefore, I have to show him the dispensation.”
Erica says, “What will the Cardinal do with the money King Zonder paid him?”
“I don’t know, Erica. From what I have seen and heard, Cardinals live very lavish life styles, and the church is not paying for those life styles. What do you think he will do with the money?”
“It seems to me that Cardinals believe they are more needy than the poor who attend their Priests’ churches.”
“Erica, do you think the Cardinals’ superiors and associates in the church are ignorant of what they do?”
“I don’t know.”
“Erica, the Cardinals probably pay a percentage of the money they receive to the Pope. Furthermore, all of the Cardinals are most likely selling dispositions to other sinners.”
Erica asked, “Vic, how did you learn about dispensations?”
“During one of the battles I was in, a Priest was wounded. When I visited him a few days later, he was feverish. I stopped at his bedside, and I don’t know why, but he thought I was a fellow Priest. He believed he was dying and insisted that I hear his confession. There wasn’t another Priest in our area, so I did.
“The Priest confessed to many of the things that he and other Priests do that violate the practices that they tell the public they follow. He told me about the sin he committed by creating Dispensation Documents for soldiers without providing his Cardinal with a percentage of the money the soldiers paid him.”
“That was the main reason I started questioning the Church and its Priests. I know that the Church provides solace to many people, and I know the Priests lie to the people. I should comply with the Priests’ directions, but I don’t. What I do is to try to comply with what is expected of a person in my position without publically questioning the Priesthood.”
“Vic, do other nobles realize that they are being lied to by the Priests?”
“I don’t know, Erica. I suspect that they accept what they are told without question.”

Sunday’s service was typical of prior Sundays, long and boring. We met with Father Gallagher after the service ended. Father Gallagher set the date and time of our wedding for immediately following the November 22nd service.
Once the date of our wedding was set, Erica said, “Father Gallagher, Vic explained the King’s desire for Vic to have many legal heirs to me. I told him that I would not be able to bear that many children within the period of time the King defined.
“Vic explained that God had granted him with a disposition to marry many women. I have several questions. My first question is, ‘When will Vic be able to marry his second wife?’
November 22, 1005
Erica and I woke before the sun rose. I was lying behind her. My left arm was under her neck and my right hand was cupping and just holding her right breast.
When I felt her move, I kissed the right side of her neck and said, “Today is our day, Erica. In a few short hours, we will stand before Father Gallagher and become man and wife.”
Erica rolled to face me. Placing her arms around my neck, she gave me a sweet, loving kiss. Normally, that would be the first of many kisses that would lead to our making love with each other. This morning it was a statement of love and desire to share our lives with each other. I returned the kiss with love instead of sexual passion.
We rose from what would soon be our marital bed and began our morning routine, which would lead to us having our morning meal. After eating, it would be time for our family to take our places in the church’s pews.
The number of people who wanted to see us get married was more than the capacity of the church. Father Gallagher agreed to marry us on the front steps of the church. Captain Hood opened the castle’s gates to permit my subjects to enter the courtyard in front of the church.
