Chapter 8
December 11, 1005
Rather than return to my castle, I decided to finish what I started.
I had replaced Earl Jameson with Captain Price. Three of my Captains were now in charge of three of my Earldoms and the only Earldom with its original Earl was Cameron.
My party and I left the Earldom of Oman and headed to Cameron.
December 12, 1005
We approached Earl Brook’s castle cautiously. The town of Lovedom was a typical town near the castle. As we passed through the town I received startling news.
I saw Sargent Ted Eslinger, Cavalry Unit E’s Sergeant, approaching me.
“Captain Bauer, I just learned that Earl Brooks is apparently dead. The villagers say that he apparently he died in bed of a heart attack last night.”
I thought that changes the situation.
“Ted, gather our people we need to revise our plans. We planned to capture the gate and then I would talk with Earl Brooks. That is no longer necessary.”
When everyone was assembled, I said, “Considering the current situation, I will approach the castle openly. Here is what we will do...”
I road up to the castle’s gate with Captain McGee and Cavalry Unit A, the rest of my party remained in the tree line out of sight. There was no noticeable activity.
I said to the guard, “I am Duke Bauer. As I approached the castle, I was told Earl Brooks died in his sleep last night. Please call your Captain of the Household Guard.”
As the Captain was summoned, I waited patiently. An older man approached. The Guard said “Captain Ortego, this is Duke Bauer; he apparently came to see Earl Brooks but learned that he died last night.”
