When I came out of the house, I saw that Whistle was leading the six ponies towards the barn. I lit a lantern and followed them. Inside the barn, I lit several more lanterns and took the saddles off the horses. I wiped down each one with handfuls of hay then placed two each in a stall.
All this time Whistle was waiting patiently. I walked to him and put an arm under his neck and pulled his head over my shoulder. I finally let the vision of what the indians had done to and with Louella Bolt hit my heart. My eyes watered up and for several minutes all I could do was sob and feel totally inadequate.
When I finally released Whistle, I brushed his back and flanks. I figured he’d find his own place to rest so I patted him on the flank and closed front the barn door. I walked back to the house to wrap up the bodies of Ma and Pa Bolt and make them ready for burial. It took an hour to have everything the way I wanted it. I took some time to remember how I’d buried my mother and father. The difference, of course, was that my mother and father had been burned together in each other’s arms by a wild fire.
I decided to sleep out in the hay loft. I couldn’t see myself sleeping in any of the Bolts beds. The bunk house had plenty of room but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. Maybe I was worried about the ghosts of the Bolts sons coming to get me.
I woke in the morning to the sound of Whistle raising a ruckus and trying to get out the barn door. I climbed out of the loft, brushed the hay off and picked it out of my hair as I walked to the door. Outside I heard ... indians. I couldn’t tell if it was the Kiowa or the renegades. I had hung my guns on a peg next to the last stall and I quickly put them on.
Standing by the door, I listened to what was going on outside. Whistle was still raising hell so I knew whoever was outside was soon going to be inside. I moved back away from the door and found a solid semi-wall to hide behind. I ducked down and waited for the door to open. Whistle was still acting up so I whistled to call him and he calmed and came to me.
Finally, the barn door let out a squeak as it opened and I heard footsteps on the gavel and dirt floor of the barn. No one spoke. I slid my Colt out of it’s holster and slowly pulled the hammer back. I looked up at Whistle and he was looking towards the door, his ears standing straight up and his nostrils flaring. He was upset about something.
I was hoping he wouldn’t suddenly charge whoever was there and end up getting shot. I decided to try to get a look at whoever was out there and so I got down low with the idea that I’d be looking up from under Whistle and up towards whoever was there. I moved my Colt around the bottom edge of the wall and looked up into the bottom of an indians loin cloth.
He looked down for some reason and screamed. I shot up, sending a bullet into his balls and up into his innards. The force of the shot lifted him up and back. Then I jumped up and saw the other two men. Whistle apparently had enough, raising up and stomping down on the closest indian.
His head was severely dented and his neck was bent and turned at an impossible angle. The third indian raised his gun to shoot my horse and I drilled him through the chest twice. Suddenly, it was quiet, but for the ruckus caused by the scarred ponies confined in their stalls and not being able to run to safety.
I quickly looked around to see if there were any other renegades I needed to worry about. That was when I heard the sound of hoofs running fast and getting closer. I quickly returned to my hiding spot as I thumbed shells into the Colt. The thundering sound came to a stop and I heard a voice yell out.
“You men check the house, front and back. You three check the bunkhouse. Wes and I’ll go and check the barn.”
I stood up and smacked Whistle on the flank.
“OK, stud, move over, our friends are here.”
The pinto stallion side stepped and stood by the panicked indian ponies.
“I’m in here!” I called out.
It only took a few seconds for my black-haired beauty to come running in and jump on me. She knocked me clean to the floor and had her lips on mine in a flash. After some considerable struggle on my part, I tore my lips away from the assault.
“Melinda, relax. I’m OK.”
She leaned back and sat on my hips before she looked around and saw the three dead indians.
The first thing she said was, “Hello Whistle!”
“Oh that’s nice. I get attacked by indians, have my lips assaulted, and you say, ‘Hello’ to my horse.”
“Hush!” and she commenced to kissing me again.
“He’s in here! Somebody come and help me he’s being attacked!” a familiar voice yelled.
Several men ran into the barn guns drawn. They stopped dead, seeing that I wasn’t fighting off the attack.
“Sid, you are treading on dangerous ground,” Wes said.
“Nah, she thinks the world of me.”
“What about Logan?”
“Who else will serve him tequila?”
Melinda and I separated and I looked up at Sid and Wes.
“You two better behave or I’ll sic my horse on ya.”
“Oh Lord!” Sid said and was out the barn door.
“Please let me up, Melinda. The last of the Bolts are in the house.”
She got up and offered me a hand, I took it and she helped me stand. Just then the sound of boots running on the barn’s gravel floor got our attention.
“Melinda, there are three bodies in the house. It looks like the Bolts.”
“Yeah, it is,” I answered. “I didn’t get here in time to help them or Louella. Don’t unwrap the bodies.”
“What happened, dear?”
“Melinda, we won’t be having any more problems with renegade indians. There were six of them that I found. I snuck up on them and killed them but they’d already killed Louella. I wrapped her body in their ponies saddle blankets and brought her back here.”
“Then this morning, three more came here. I guess they followed my trail from where I’d killed their friends and I’d just woke up thanks to Whistle. I hid over there behind that half wall and shot them. Well I got two. Whistle got one. He kinda stomped on his head.”
“It sure looks like that. Are you OK?”
“Just some cuts and scratches. I had to ride and crawl through some scrub brush with prickly pear and cactus thorns to get to the renegades camp. They were raping Louella’s dead body, Melinda,” I said and started to sob. “I was too late.”
Melinda embraced me as I stood there. She held me tightly and turned us around so the other men wouldn’t see my tears. “Knowing you, Logan, you did everything you could do and you did it as fast as you could.”
She quietly spoke to me. “I got to town just after Wes got back and we all took off for here. You said you’d leave an easy trail from here, so this seemed the smart place to start off. Wes and the boys had just come back from their ride to the wagon. They found a few personal things and it looks like the baby has no living kin. They were either killed in the war and or died by the influenza. So it looks like Darlene is going to get to be a mother after all and maybe Wes will be her father.”
“We were just riding over that last hill when we heard shots. I was scared to death for you.”
I lifted my head from her shoulder and she wiped my tears with her sleeve. I straightened up and softly kissed her lips.
“Let’s go and bury the Bolts.”
I walked out of the barn and looked up to see the trees that I’d hidden behind when I brought the Bolt boys back for their mother to bury them. I walked up to Sid and shook his hand.
“Sid, thanks for riding to the rescue. Would you please take some of the boys and look around for the graves of the Bolt boys. I’d think it would be right to bury Ma, Pa, and Louella with them.”
“Sure thing, Logan,” he said and moved his hand to make like he was wiping a tear from his face as he looked down to my cheeks.
I nodded to him and wiped my face with my kerchief like I would have if I was wiping sweat off myself.
“Hello, my friend,” Melinda said. “Thanks for protecting my man.”
I turned to see that she was talking to Whistle. He walked out of the barn and went to the only filly he wasn’t going to get. She gave him a hug.
“Logan, I’m assuming that Whistle has added to his band of pinto mares.”
“Actually, I don’t know if they’re all mares. Might be a gelding in the mix. Could be. He was acting a bit feisty towards one of the ponies. We’ll take them over to our place. We still have a little work to do there.”
“We can’t do that, unfortunately. There is another trail herd coming in this evening. There should be a crew of about fifteen cowboys coming into town to relax. The Sheriff will be needed, I’m sure.”
I let out a sigh and said, “Wonderful. Do me a favor and put out the word that I just killed nine indians and I’m in no mood to mess with any drunk cowboys tonight.”
“I’ll make sure Sid knows and I’ll have him tell Riggs, Peel, and Mother as well.”
“Who?”
“The three bartenders at the saloon.”
“Mother?”
“That’s what he wants to be called and don’t ask why unless you want a fight.”
“Fine, as long as I don’t have to draw my gun tonight.”
I walked over to the stalls that held the ponies and undid the ropes securing them. The ponies were happy to be let loose and no longer cramped up. They backed out into the barn and Whistle took command. He let out a call and went out the door that led to the corral and they all followed him.
Out in the corral he trotted around the corral and five of the horses followed. The sixth was a gelding and he just watched the gathering. I walked out into the corral and opened the gate. Whistle trotted to the open gate, stopped by me, and rubbed his head against my shoulder.
“I’m good, boy. We’ll take them all back to the ranch with us.”
He let out a whinny and nodded his head and then took off like his tail was on fire. The six ponies, even the gelding, took off after him. I turned and walked smack into a large pair of breasts.
“Melinda! Sorry. I keep forgetting that your breasts walk about two steps ahead of you.”
“Very cute, Sheriff. Well you better get used to them because they’re gonna get bigger.”
“Bigger? Wow!”
“At the Kiowa village Bright Sunset took me to her medicine tent. She waved some feathers around me and then threw some powder over me. Then she put hands on my head, both my breasts, and my stomach. She got a big smile and said ‘Autògà’.”
“OK?”
“Logan, autògà is the Kiowa word for pregnant.”
“Oh. OK.”
It only took about ten to fifteen seconds before it hit me.
“Wait. What?”
“You heard me. According to that Kiowa medicine woman, you and I have made a baby.”
“We have?”
“Logan, I don’t know about you, but I have been trying awfully hard to have a baby. And I know that every time, and the only times, I’ve been working on it, you just so happened to have been there.”
I spoke quietly and as the realization came to me, “Yeah. I was. Melinda, we’re gonna have a baby.”
“Yes love we are.”
“So what do I do now?”
“Well I would think that if you’re happy you would tell people.”
“Wait! We’re not married!”
“I know. I’ve been asked many times by many men but I’ve never said yes.”
“You never said yes?”
“No.”
I must have gotten a seriously sad look on my face because Melinda looked at me with raised eyebrows like she was waiting for something. It took another fifteen to twenty seconds for my brain to wake up.
“NO!” I shouted. “NO! ... Yes. No. Wait! Melinda Copeland, would you marry me if I ask you?”
“If you asked me, yes, I’d marry you.” She paused for a bit and then said, “So?”
“So what?”
“So are you going to ask?”
“I did.”
“No, Logan you asked what I’d say if you asked. You didn’t ask.”
“I didn’t?”
“No.”
“Well, would you?”
“Would I what?”
The loud laughter from the other side of the corral fence got my attention. I turned to see Sid and Wes standing there laughing so hard they were holding their sides with one hand and supporting themselves on the corral post with the other.
“What are you two laughing at?”
“We’re laughing at a damned fool what doesn’t know how to ask his woman to marry him,” Sid said.
I looked at the two men and then back to Melinda. She wasn’t laughing but did have a big smile on her face.
“Oh shit!” I said when it hit me. “Melinda Copeland, would you please marry me?”
“Yes, Logan O’Dell, I will marry you.”
“OK. Good. So what do I do now?”
“Oh this is gonna be good!” Sid said to Wes as he nudged him with an elbow.
“What? I ain’t never done this before. Wes, how are you gonna ask Darlene?”
Wes stopped laughing at once. Sid burst out laughing even harder. Melinda laughed at all of us. As she walked out of the corral and through the barn, she placed a hand on Sid’s shoulder and pulled him after her out into the yard. Wes stood still, mouth hanging open. I walked past him and said, “Not so funny now, is it?”
“What? Wait!”
Wes came running after me and I ran to catch up to my wife.
Wife?
Oh my.
Wife.
I caught up and Sid was explaining that the boys had found the other graves and they’d begun digging the three graves.
“Wait up!” I demanded. “Don’t dig three graves. I think Ma and Pa should rest together in the same grave.”
Sid and Melinda looked at each other for a moment and nodded before Sid said, “Yeah, Logan. That’s a good idea.”
He took off running towards the grave sites. I looked at Melinda and just shook my head.
“What’s wrong, Logan?”
“Life’s just funny. Here Louella dies in a most horrible manner and you are having a baby. A set of parents die but their baby is gonna be the reason two people get married. I finally get a home of my own and a bossy woman has to move in with me.”
“Hey there. Watch it cowboy.”
“I’m not a cowboy, I’m a Sheriff, with a ladies man for a horse. Hey, I just thought of something!”
“What? Something to aggravate me?”
“No. And what are you getting touchy about?”
“Nothing! I’m told women get a little edgy when they are pregnant.”
“Well hold on to your hat. What if I see about buying this place and adding it to ours?”
Melinda looked at me and crunched up her brow. She always did that when she was going deep in thought at her desk. I could tell that she was coming up with something and after several long seconds she spit it out.
“Logan, this place, added to ours, would be too big for you to manage and be the Sheriff. What if we made it possible for Wes to buy it? He and Darlene and the baby would have a hell of a head start in life.”
“Good idea. But let’s keep my idea in mind in case the two of them don’t stick. In the meantime, I think you said something about another trail herd coming in?”
“Yes. We should head back now and the men can finish with the Bolts. OK?”
“Yeah, it sounds like the best thing to do. Hey, maybe I’ll get to use my brand new privy!”
“That’s true. Let me get Sid and Wes.”
Melinda took off running to where her bartender and our new friend were standing and talking. To say that Wes was completely taken by the sight of Melinda running with her breasts flying all over under her shirt would not be an understatement. He blushed bright as he tried his best not to stare. He failed. But he failed with a big smile on his face.
That’s when Melinda’s words came back to me, “they’re gonna get bigger.” I blushed at the thought and the picture in my head.
I washed the thought I’d had out of my head completely when she spoke to the two men and then turned to run back. Good heavens above.
Bigger?
I felt light-headed as the blood rushed from my head to somewhere else. As she got closer, I was so uncomfortable that I just had to reach down and adjust myself. As I shook my cock down my pants leg and into a more proper position, Melinda smiled and pointed. She was not, however, pointing at me. She was pointing past me. I turned to look towards the barn and there was Whistle his cock fully extended and in all its glory.
I looked at the stupid horse and just as Melinda got back to me, I said out loud to him, “How would you like it if I waved my cock at your mares?”
