Well you’d have thought I’d just given her the best present in the world. She squeezed my hand most of the way back to town. And I had a nice quiet night before Melinda and I went to bed.

In the morning, I was woken by kisses. I opened my eyes to see Melinda as close to my face as she could get.

“Good morning, my love.”

Melinda Caldwell’s eyes teared up and she took me in her arms. We kissed again and I got up to pee and shave. She held my cock and aimed it into the pot. She stopped me from shaving.

“Please let me.”

I did and she lovingly shaved my face without so much as a nick. When she was done she brought my face between her large breasts and rubbed them around my face.

“Good you feel nice and smooth. I have a feeling that this is going to be an eventful day, Logan. Let’s get some breakfast.”

We went down to the dining room and Elise took our order. While the food was being prepared, I told Melinda, “I want to check that the men going out to the baby’s wagon are well armed and have a plan if they run into trouble.”

I quickly left the Club and ran down to the livery. Wes had the five other men with him. They were checking their rifles and pistols. I saw that three of the men had shotguns as well.

“Morning Wes,” I said as I walked into the livery.

“Morning, Sheriff. We’re about ready to take off. Everyone is fully armed and we’ve packed in a lot of extra ammunition. If we have to make a stand we should be ready to take just about anything anyone throws against us.”

“Good. I’m riding out to meet with a group of Kiowa that have set up a village on my ranch. I’ll see if they know anything.”

“Kiowa? You’re going to ride into a village of Kiowa?”

“Yes. They’re on good terms with me. If they know anything about the indians who killed the folks in the wagon they’ll tell me. They might know if they’re the same that attacked the Bolts. I might even be able to get them to help us hunt them down.”

“Really? What did you do to come to terms with Kiowa?”

“I let them stake me out, naked, on an ant hill for a few days and didn’t make a fuss about it.”

Wes looked at me like he didn’t hear what I said right. He turned and looked at my stallion, then back at me.

“Is that where you got that horse?”

“Yup. Actually, I think that’s where he got me.”

Whistle blew and whinnied like he knew what I’d said. Wes looked at him and then at me again. He shook his head and said, “He’s been watching us like a hawk. I’ve never seen anything like it. The kid, the hosteler, talks to him like they’re in a conversation.”

“I know. Well, you’d better take off. See if you can find if the baby has kin somewhere.”

“I don’t know that I want to do that. Darlene is attached to that baby.”

“Wes has she told you anything about her past?”

“Yes. I know she was your girl and she acted badly and had to get married. She had a baby and her husband killed it because it was the wrong color and her father killed him.”

“That’s the short story. I’m surprised she opened up that much. You two must have hit it off more than anyone thought.”

“Sheriff, I know she’s a whore. I know men have fucked her but for some reason it doesn’t seem to matter to me. I think I must be loco.”

“When you come back I know a man you need to talk to out at the Square T. But for now, get on the trail and I’ll see you when I get back in town.”

“OK, Sheriff.”

“And if you’re going to stick around, I think you can call me Logan.”

“OK, Logan. See you later.”

Wes mounted up and the other men joined him. They took off out of town at a moderate run. As they rode out of sight over the rise to the South of town, I went back to the Club and Melinda.

I walked into the club, waved good morning to Sid, and opened the door to the dining room. Melinda was sitting there waiting for me. She had a towel over my food to keep it warm. I kissed her and sat down across from her. She took the towel off the plates and there before me was a big stack of pancakes, with bacon and eggs on the side.

“Do you want coffee?”

“Yes, please.”

Melinda got up and called to someone outside the door and a few seconds later a tall slender redhead came in with a couple of coffee cups and a big coffee pot. She set the cups on the table and poured the hot coffee. When she was done she asked in a very soft and sweet voice, “Will that be enough or should I leave the pot?”

“Please leave the pot right here, Glenda. Thank you.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

She walked out and began to close the dining room door but Melinda stopped her.

“Glenda, please leave the door open.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

Glenda left the room and I looked at Melinda.

“She’s new.”

“No, she’s old.”

“Excuse me?”

“She’s not a new girl. She’s one of my former girls. She left, got married, had a baby. The baby died from influenza. Her husband blamed her and left. He took all her money and she had nowhere to go so she scrapped enough money together to get back here. She sent me a telegram and asked me to come back. I said yes and she came in on last night’s stage.”

I ate as I listened. The coffee was very hot and it took some time to cool it by blowing on it. By the way Melinda talked about Glenda, she seemed to have a closer relationship than with other’s in the Club.

“Well, Wes and five others just rode South. I hope all goes well.”

“I almost hope they don’t find anything that mentions the baby’s kinfolk. Darlene is glued to that baby. If the baby has to be taken to kin, I don’t know that Darlene will handle it. I’m worried that she might take her own life.”

“Let’s see what Wes can find. I think those two might have gotten sweet of each other. When he gets back, I’m gonna take him out to meet Clete and Silvy. If the baby stays, I think Wes might find himself with a wife and baby.”

“I agree. After you went on your rounds last night, he sat next to her as she nursed the baby and held her hand. We got a cradle from the orphanage and the baby slept in Darlene’s room and Wes stayed with her.”

“He said he thinks he’s loco for caring for a whore. Those are his words. He knows that she’s fucked a lot of men and he doesn’t care.”

“Well let’s hope it works out for the best. As soon as you’re done we’ll head over to the livery and get the horses. I think we’ll take a pack horse with us. I don’t know if those indian ponies that Whistle gathered will carry any supplies.”

“I bet they will if he asks them.”

Melinda looked at me and had a strange look on her face.

“You saddleornhave to know that as strange as that sounds you’re probably right. That horse is just not normal.”

“Don’t say that around him. I think he understands us.”

“I know! And that’s what I mean.”

“Well back to what we were talking about, I think we take a pack horse with us.”

“OK, Logan. I want to take along the things to make up the bed. The new mattresses won’t be here for another six or seven weeks. I don’t think those old mattresses have bugs but they’re old and lumpy. Good sheets and blankets should make sleeping there a little easier.”

“Hey, why don’t we take a mattress from here? You must have an extra one in case something bad happens on one of them.”

“I think I do. I’ll have to ask Sid.”

“Sid? I’d have thought that you know everything about your business.”

“I do know about the business, mister,” she said pointedly. “I do not have the equipment and furniture inventory for the Club and the hotel memorized. But you’re right between the Club and the hotel we must have an extra mattress or two. You finish eating and I’ll go check with Sid and then we can head out.”

“OK.”

Melinda got up and I paused eating to watch her ass leave the room.

“Eat, Logan! You can stare at my ass later.”

“Yes, dear,” I answered not knowing how she knew I was watching. Then it hit me, of course she knew I’d be watching her ass when I wasn’t watching her eyes or her teats.

I dug back into the remainder of the stack of pancakes and poured another cup of coffee. I was hoping that Wes didn’t run into any trouble. I surprised myself by hoping that he and Darlene were going to be good together. I guess my love for Melinda had erased the hate of Darlene.

I’d just swallowed the last of the pancakes and was washing them down with the last of the coffee in my cup when Melinda came back in.

“Sid says that we do have a couple of new mattresses so the next time we take a real supply run to the place we can bring one of them. Are you done?”

“Yeah, let’s get this show on the road. I’m sure Whistle is in a hurry to get his new mares out to his place.”

“His place? You mean your place?”

“I mean our place but don’t let him hear that. I have no problem comparing cocks with him but if I have to jump a fence it’s not going to look good for me.”

I wiped my mouth with the table napkin and followed a laughing Melinda out the door. She waved to Sid and I did as well. He looked at me and laughed. We pushed open the tall bat-wing doors and headed for the livery stable.

“Sid made sure that we have the supplies we wanted to take with us. All we have to do is stop at the store and strap the package onto the pack horse.”

“Great.”

We walked into the livery and Whistle backed out of his stall and gave a call. The three indian ponies all responded with a few blows and gruff grunts. They were all in stalls and had ropes blocking their path out. Whistle came to me and looked eager to get his saddle and be on the way. Melinda went to her dun gelding and put the blanket and saddle on him while I did the same with my pinto.

The dun took the bit and Whistle pushed his head into the hackamore. I looked back at the three ponies and saw they all wore a hackamore instead of bridles and bits. I quickly shook out a lariat and walked Whistle out of the livery. The mares lined up behind him in what I assumed was the pecking order they’d established. I took the lariat and ran it from Whistles saddle horn to the first mares hackamore. Then taking two shorter lengths of rope, I secured the second and then the third mares together and secured them to the first mare.

Melinda had tied a rope from her saddle horn to the bridle of the pack horse. We each checked the knots and when we were happy that everything was secure, we mounted up and rode to the store. Ryan Sheets had the supply pack waiting for us on the boardwalk in front of his store. Melinda and I dismounted and lifted the pack onto the pack horse, setting it in the cradle on the horses back.

While Melinda tied the pack down tight, I went into the store. Ryan was standing behind the counter watching Melinda stretch her body out to tie the pack. He quickly shifted his gaze to me.

“Everything you asked for is in the pack, Sheriff.”

“Great. How much do I owe you?”

“You’re the Sheriff. I’ll bill the city.”

“No, sir. These supplies are for me and Melinda and for our ranch. What do I owe you?”

He opened a drawer next to the cash drawer and pulled out a pad of paper. He made some notes and then tore the top sheet off and handed it to me. I looked it over and nothing seemed overpriced so I reached into my pocket and pulled out some bills.

“Let’s see, here is a ten and five and three dollars. Eighteen dollars.” I handed the money to the shopkeeper and said, “May I have a receipt please?”

“Of course, Sheriff.”

Ryan opened the cash drawer and pulled out a pad of receipts and a sheet of black paper. He placed the black paper between the top and second copy of the receipt paper and he wrote out the receipt to record the sale. Tearing off the top sheet, he handed me the original copy and then tore out the second sheet and set it in a section of the cash drawer.

“That should do it Sheriff. Safe travels.”

“I hope we don’t run into the people who have been harassing the local hunters.”

“Or the indians who chased in here the other night.”

“Right, or them. Thanks again Ryan. See you later.”

I walked out of the store, stepped right up onto Whistle, slide the receipt onto my shirt pocket and waved to Melinda to follow me. Instead she rode up next to me and took her place by my side. I smiled at her and she returned it.

We weren’t in a big hurry and the pack horse kept up the pace nicely. The three mares wanted to run, but each time they tried Whistle let out a sound and the ponies fell back into place. We stopped at a stream for all to drink and I walked back to the ponies. As I approached they shied a bit but again Whistle made a noise like a high pitched moan and the mares calmed down.

I stepped to the first mare and offered my hand, the one with the apple slice in it. She sniffed, tested it a few times with her lips and then took it. I did the same with the other two, with similar results. Then I gave the rest of the apple to Whistle and stroked his neck. He nuzzled me and rested his head over my shoulder.

I patted his neck and mounted up. Melinda had done a little apple bribing with the dun and the pack horse so it seemed that everyone was happy as we walked out of the stream on towards the O’Dell Ranch. I said that title in my head several times and liked the sound of it. Then I started thinking of what our brand would look like. I was thinking of an “L” with the left vertical line of the “M” over the horizontal line of the “L” and have both of those circled by a large capital letter “O.”

I’d have to run those thoughts past Melinda. We rode up over the hill overlooking our gate and looked down on the O’Dell Ranch. Everything looked normal. We rode down the hill and then I heard the sound of horses running and from the back of the corral came three indian ponies who looked absolutely pleased to see Whistle. The three ponies with us didn’t seem nearly as happy.

“Melinda, go ahead and ride to the house. I’m going to let these mares loose in the corral and see how they do.”

“You better unsaddle Whistle first. If the mares decide to fight for position in the herd, he’s going to need to keep the peace.”

“That’s what I was going to do.”

I rode Whistle into the barn and dismounted, quickly untied the lead to the first mare, and walked her and the tethered ponies to the door to the corral. I quickly untied the rope to the other two and let them into the corral. The first mares in Whistles herd were at the fence wanting to check out the new girls.

While I did that Melinda took off his saddle and blanket.

I walked him to the door to the corral and as soon as I removed his hackamore he bolted for the fence. He strutted and pranced and generally let it be known that this was his kingdom and he was in charge. I opened the gate from the corral to the pasture before Whistle would jump over it and he was off like a shot. Six mares took off with him. They ran about fifty yards out into the distance and stopped.

He rounded them all into a group and circled around it. None of the mares was responding as he’d hoped. None of them were ready to mate. So, he took off running for the prairie grassland and I figured to let him go until Melinda and I unpacked the supplies.

She and I untied the pack from the horse and carried it into the kitchen, setting it on the kitchen table. She began undoing the pack and I took her dun and the pack horse to the barn. While I was relieving the horses of saddle and pack, Melinda was putting up the canned goods we’d brought and was walking up the stairs to the bedroom when I came back in.

“Come on, Logan, you can learn how to put sheets on a bed.”

“I suppose if I’m gonna live indoors, I better learn some of these indoor skills.”

Melinda showed me how to put what she called a fitted sheet onto the mattress in our bedroom. Then we put on a second one because Melinda said it would keep any bugs living in the mattress from getting to us.

Once all the supplies were in place we walked out the back door and I let out a whistle for my horse. Way off in the distance I head an answering whinny. Then I heard the stomping of hoofs as Whistle and his band of mares. There were six of them so he had not gone raiding the Kiowa herd.

The seven of them came running right up to the corral and walked in through the gate. All headed for the water trough and I began to recognize the alpha mare. She was a pinto, like all the others, but had a sharply outlined star in the middle of her forehead, She and two others drank first. Then the last three drank.

Whistle came over to me acting like the proud leader he was. I greeted him with a pat on the neck and then I headed for the barn with him following. Inside I placed a clean blanket on him and then put on the saddle. I pulled the cinch tight and then held out the hackamore for him to slide his head into.
