The three braves picked up their friend and put him over a horse. Mounting their own horses, they slowly rode away and I pulled out my rifle to cover them as they left. One of them turned to look back at me and I raised my rifle. He turned back, kicked his horse and the three animals took off. I watched until they were out of sight and then for a little bit more.

I had two choices at that point. I could follow them back to their camp and confront White Bird or I could check on the Bolts. I figured that the damage was already done with the Kiowa so I turned Whistles head towards the Bolt place. He wasn’t happy but he went.

“Don’t worry, Whistle. We’ll bring your mares with us and you can keep an eye on them.”

It took about an hour to get within sight of the Bolt place. I remembered the line of trees where we’d tied the horses with the Bolts son’s bodies on them. I looked around carefully. If Ma or Pa, especially Ma Bolt, was still alive they would shoot me before I could tell them about Louella. I slowly worked my way down the side of the hill and towards their stables and corral. I saw no cattle, which didn’t surprise me. But I saw no horses either, which did surprise me.

I walked Whistle into the stable, followed by his mares, and found it to be empty. I dismounted and led him to a manger with hay. I tied a slip knot around a beam. If I needed him I could whistle and he’d undo the knot and come running. The mares all settled in around him and things got very calm. There was a water pump just outside the stable door. I pumped it a few times and was pleased to see that it was already primed. I filled five buckets with water and filled the trough the mares were gathered around and then left a full bucket hanging on a peg in Whistles stall.

With the animals covered, I took the thong off my pistol and pulled out my rifle. I snuck around the door to the stable and ducked behind a couple of sheaves of hay. With the noise I’d made in the stable, I figured anyone in the house would be alert to the presence of someone outside.

Aside from the normal sounds of birds and such there were no other sounds. I quick stepped to the side of the house and slowly made my way around to the front. I looked in the front window and saw no one. The time to commit was on me. I looked down at the star on my chest and said to myself, “So much for jurisdiction, Logan.”

I opened the front door and stepped inside. It was quiet. I looked around the first floor of the house and found nothing. I went upstairs and found Ma and Pa Bolt in the bedroom. They were both wounded and holding the other.

“I chased off the Kiowa. Louella is safe at my place with Melinda. What can I do to help?”

The old woman spat towards me weakly and said, “Find a way to bring back the sons you murdered. They would have protected us.”

That bothered me.

“I’ll leave and send Louella home. I’m going to keep an eye out for the Kiowa. I’ve been talking to them and I thought we had an agreement.”

I walked out of their bedroom and went out the front to find Whistle and his three mares waiting for me. I took a walk around the house. Nothing was out of order. The contents of the garden hadn’t been taken. I figured the Kiowa had come for something other than a normal raid. Since I didn’t know for sure, I decided the best thing to do was to get the heck out of here. Jumping down off the porch, I landed on the grass and trotted over to the stables.

Whistle followed me and had his ears perked up. I smiled and shook my head before stepping up in the saddle.

“Come on boy, let’s get the family home.”

He let out a grunt and a whiny and we and his mares began an easy run back to our place.

“You found Whistle’s mares!” Melinda called out happily when we were close enough. “Did you find anything else?”

Whistle and I approached the front door; I dismounted and sent Whistle towards the barn with a smack on the rear flank. He and the mares took off for their familiar territory. I watched them go and then turned back to Melinda.

“I found a lot. Ma and Pa Bolt are alive but wounded, and the house is untouched. The Kiowa took nothing.”

“Nothing?”

“No food, clothes, weapons, nothing.”

“That’s not right. This is gonna sound silly, but we’re sure they were Kiowa?”

“I shot one of the four that had the mares but I didn’t get a close look at him. Louella said it was Kiowa, right?”

“Yes, but I wonder. She’s been awfully quiet since you left.”

“Melinda, how well do you know her? I mean, is she as mean and crazy as her brothers and parents?”

“I don’t know.”

“Let’s go and talk with her.”

I followed Melinda upstairs and to one of the bedrooms. Louella was lying on a bed. Melinda had apparently found some clean linen and covered the old mattress with it. We walked in quietly and I sat in a chair next to the bed, Melinda sat on the bed. That little disturbance caused Louella to sit up quickly with a look of panic on her face.

“Easy there, Louella. Relax,” I said softly. “I just got back from your place. Your parents are ok. They’re wounded and you need to get home to see to them. The Kiowa haven’t touched anything in your house. They didn’t empty the drawers or take any food from the kitchen. Except for your parents being hurt and lying in their bedroom, the place looks perfectly normal.”

“So, what do you want me to do now?” Louella Bolt said in a rather stern voice.

“Well at this point, you should go home. I can get some men from town to come out and help you take care of the place and your folks until they heal up. If there’s anything we can do to help let me know.”

“What can you do? You killed my brothers and left us helpless. You’ve done us nothing but harm since you showed up here. What can you do? Leave us alone.”

Her tone became more and more angry as she spoke. I saw no sense to repeat that her brothers started it in every case. I stood, looked at Melinda, and said, “Then as soon as I can saddle one of our horses, I’ll send you on your way. I want you out of my home.”

I walked out of the bedroom without another word. I no longer wanted to help the woman. I couldn’t care any less for her than I did right then. Melinda joined me a few minutes later and caught up to me as I made my way down the staircase to the living room.

“She’s not herself, Logan. I think the shock of it all is just hitting her now.”

“And the shock of being thrown out of the only help she is likely to find in the territory. I’m going to take care of Whistle and saddle one of the mares for her. She can make her own way. Hell, maybe she can come and work at the Club.”

Melinda looked at me like I’d just insulted everything she held dear. I stopped and looked at her, waiting to be told why I was wrong. She stood for a moment with her arms at her sides and then slowly crossed them under her breasts.

“Logan, I know you have no regard for the Bolts. And that they’ve tried to kill you on more than one occasion. Maybe you shouldn’t think of her as a Bolt and see her as a woman who is the last survivor of a wagon train or an indian raid. Give her the first benefit of a doubt. If she turns her back on you then you can feel justified walking away.”

“Melinda, I already feel justified walking away. It appears that you are the one who has different feelings.”

I stood for a moment and then took her in my arms and kissed her.

“You’re a good woman, Melinda Caldwell, and a better human being than me. Alright, I’ll give her a chance. I’ll give her a horse. She needs to get back to her place and see if I was right that nothing was messed with. If she needs help she can ask you for it. I really do not want to deal with her.”

“OK. Go get her a horse and I’ll let her know the lay of the land. If she doesn’t return the horse, I’m sure we can send Whistle after it.”

“Oh yeah. He is a possessive fella.”

We went back to the corral and Whistle was prancing around. I went to the barn and got a rope so I could lasso one of the mares. I picked one that seemed to be a bit apart from the others and threw a rope over its neck. She didn’t fight or spook and neither did Whistle. He did walk over however and seemed concerned.

“I need to let Louella have a horse to ride back to her place. We’ll get her back in a few days I think.”

He raised his head high and his eyes went wide. I honestly thought he was going to come after me. He blew and whinnied. And he and the mare touched noses. Then he turned and walked away.

“Did we just see that stallion say good-bye to the mare?” Melinda asked.

“It’s a little spooky but yeah, I think so.”

I led the mare back to the barn and put the blanket and saddle that Melinda had removed from the dead horse. Next I fit the dead horses bridle to the pony before I led her to the house. Melinda walked next to me and touched my side and hand several times. When we got to the house, I tied the mare to the railing and Melinda and I went inside. I walked upstairs to the bedroom where I found Louella sitting and looking in a mirror.

“Louella, I know what I said earlier and I’m sorry. I was angry. I have a horse for you. I think you need to go home, take care of your folks, and see if the Kiowa really did leave everything untouched. If you want the help, I’ll get some men to come over and help your parents run the place until they’re on their feet ... Let me know when we can have the horse back and I’ll come and get him.”

“Why?”

“Why what?”

“Why are you doing this?”

“Thank Melinda. She thinks I should wipe the slate clean and give you one more chance. I trust her opinions, so I’m doing it. I’m assuming that you got supplies at the house to feed yourself. If you need help let me know and I’ll be a good neighbor until you do something to break that trust. Then all bets are off.”

“OK. Thank you, Logan. Thank you, Melinda.”

She stood and wiped off her face on her sleeve and walked out of the room and down the stairs. In the living room she stopped and looked back at us.

“Thank you, again.”

She hung her head and walked out to the porch. Stepping up into the saddle, she turned her toward home.

We weren’t in a mood to do much fixin’ up and cleaning, so we went to the barn, made sure all of the animals were fed and watered. I took the blanket and saddle to Whistle and he stood still and looked back at me. Melinda chose one of his mares instead of her gelding.

“Maybe he won’t feel so alone if he has one of his own with him in the livery. He’s had a rough day too, you know. My dun and the pinto will be good here until we come back.”

I kissed her and smiled my agreement.

“I love you, Melinda. Let’s get back to town so I can do my job. I’ll ask around about helping Louella with her folks. I’m gonna need a good night’s sleep if you don’t mind.”

“As long as you get it in my bed, that’s fine.”

I got up on Whistle and Melinda got up on his mare. We headed out of the barn and Whistle let out a few sounds and the last mare returned them. Outside, I dismounted, closed the barn doors, and latched them together, before remounting the pinto. We rode back to town at a good speed and arrived before sundown.

We were in the livery and Whistle was happy to finally get the saddle off him. I knew that what he really wanted was a good roll in the dirt. Once I set the saddle on a rail and placed the blanket on top of it. I took off his hackamore and set it on the blanket. The brushing I gave him helped but I could tell he was looking out the back of the livery.

“Is it OK if Whistle goes out back and takes a roll?” I asked the orphan stable boy.

He smiled and said, “If I say no, he’s gonna do it as soon as you leave and I turn my back so go ahead.”

“Melinda, you might as well let the mare go with him.”

“I don’t think I could stop her. She’s as attached to him as he is to her. Kinda reminds me of some people I know.”

I looked at her and she gave me that little smile. I nodded and smiled back before smacking Whistle on the rump and sent him out the back door. The pinto mare followed and they both dropped for a roll in the dusty yard.

“Did you ever wonder what it would feel like to do that?” she asked.

“Who’s to say I haven’t?”

The face that answer produced was new to me and I smiled and winked and patted her on the rump.

“Go for it.”

“Ladies, do not roll in the dirt!”

“Fine. I’m gonna swing by the jail and see if there are any messages. I’ll meet you back at the Club.”

“Yes, dear,” she said with a wink and a smile.

The jail door was still locked when I got there and there were no notes on the door either. I unlocked the place and went in. I lit the lamp by the door and a couple of lamps on my desk and everything seemed like I left it the day before. So, after giving the whole place a look see, I blew out the three lamps, left and locked the door behind me.

The town sounded quiet as I walked across the street. My normal routine seemed to be that I’d walk by the hotel and see if all was well, then to the saloon and then into the club. The hotel was quiet and I waved at Robert, the night clerk. He waved back. Everything was fine.

I stepped down off the boardwalk onto the dirt of the street between the buildings. Stepping up onto the next boardwalk and as I stepped past the short bat-wing doors I looked over them and into the room. The bartender and two men at the bar were standing with their arms up over their heads.

They were looking towards a side of the room that I couldn’t see from where I stood. I listened and heard a man’s voice.

“ ... came here to meet a few of the Bolt boys and now I’m told that some cowboy off the trail has wiped out the whole family. I want to know who he is. We’ll see if he’s a gun or a back shooter.”

I took the thong off my pistols and waved at the bartender to let him know I was there. Then I walked through the batwing doors and turned to the right to see a man about my height with his gun drawn.

“Keep coming, mister.”

“Who me?”

“Yes you! Who are you?”

“I’m Logan O’Dell. Sheriff. And the man that took down the Bolt boys. I just got back from the Bolt place. Ma and Pa Bolt have been wounded by Kiowa. Louella Bolt made it over to my place and I went over there and ran them off.”

“You ran off a Kiowa raiding party?”

“Well, I killed one and the others sorta chose to leave.” I looked around at the other men in the saloon and added, “Louella might need some of you boys to go out there and lend a hand running the place until they run you off or they’re back to work.”

I looked at the men with their hands in the air and then back to the stranger.

“Now, what seems to be your problem?”

“My problem is that I was supposed to meet with Asher and Lenny Bolt but I’m told they’re dead.”
