Silas returned home shortly before dawn. His mind had been on all of the progress, both good and bad, at Dreibruch.
While the results had led to disaster, there had been successes. The question rumbling through his mind was: Was the reach for these powers evil itself or had they merely gone too far?
Shaking his head, he did not know, but the truth ... the hard and painful truth that he would never have said to Ashcombe or Kaufman was that he did not know. The advancements were useful ... in moderation.
Silas was not one to be bond up by conventionally unprogressive thinking that he rejected bettering of one’s self and society.
The enemy had a head-start, and there would be work to do, but Silas understood what had truly occurred in the marrow of his bones.
The carriage had barely stopped before Thomas emerged from the house, coat pulled tightly around himself against the morning chill.
Whether he had been waiting or heard the carriage and came to greet Silas was altogether immaterial. Neither man spoke when Silas emerged from the receptacle.
Thomas looked from the man then at the carriage, then at the trunk of books and weapons that Silas had brought with him.
“You came back,” was what the butler said.
“I did and I am,” Silas replied.
Thomas studied his friend’s face, and Silas knew he would not be able to hide the truth of his monumental failure even with the exhaustion of the trip. Weariness had sunk deeper than the simple loss of sleep.
“What happened?”
“I made some terrible mistakes at Dreibruch, my friend,” Silas confessed.
