“Trust is earned, respect is given, and loyalty is demonstrated. Betrayal of any one of those is to lose all three.”

Silas stepped up the road down back to his home. With his gloves in his pocket, the Wolcott was finding it hotter than he had thought. He needed it to be much colder to be taking a nine o’clock walk back home. His coat flared slightly at the hem as he walked toward the great oak doors of Wolcott Manor.

There were a thousand thoughts running through his head. Why had he agreed to Jonathan’s suggestion? Jonathan was fun for a good time, but he was not one to take advice from. Why had he bed that barmaid? He cared nothing for her even if she was attractive. Why was he walking home when surely he could have taken a carriage? More and more, his own decisions for himself did not make any sense.

He shook his head, trying to gain perspective on himself, he found himself failing. This could not entirely be his fault. His father had died from using black magic. Jonathan could not know anything of the secrets of Silas’s family secrets. However, his solution might simply be the best outcome.

How many difficult problems in the world could be solved if only the person considered the simplest solution?

When he looked up, he saw Thomas at the threshold.

The butler had waited for the master of the house. On one hand, Silas was grateful for such loyalty. On the other, he thought of the secrets that Thomas had kept secrets from him. Was the loyalty he gave just a show from servant to employer?

He observed the straight posture of the butler with his eyes lowered just enough to suggest both respect and subtle wariness. He opened the door without a word and stepped aside to let Silas pass.

Everything about his butler was the same, but the perspective was irrevocably altered by the actions and inaction taken by the older black man.

“Good afternoon, Thomas,” Silas said.

He did not mean to, but he could feel himself being short with his employee. He did not mean for his ill spirits to influence his mood, but they did nonetheless. No amount of education on courtesy could override his hurt sense of morality.

It was not simply the grave robbing, but the secrecy and lack of decency in denying the order. No matter the reason Thomas gave, the choices disturbed Silas.

“Good afternoon, sir,” Thomas replied, his voice as even and unbothered as a pendulum swing.
