It was one of the advantages of being a quiet and rather shy fifteen year-old, that people gradually came to ignore your presence. So it was that one afternoon, as the officer’s wives gathered at the club for their afternoon tea, David realized that a mild scandal was developing.
He was first alerted by the change in tone of a conversation. Something or someone had evoked a communal sense of disapproval. There was suddenly much shaking of heads, tutting and murmurs of condemnation.
Sitting outside of the circle of outraged bodies, David quietly moved his chair until he could hear exactly what was going on.
There had been a dinner party. These occurred several times a week and were often organized at the officers club itself. However, at the most recent one, someone had caused outrage.
THAT someone was the wife of a young lieutenant who had only recently been sent out to join the ship. Not only had she been privileged with a trip to Singapore soon after their marriage – something that most of the wives had waited years to be offered - but she was young and very pretty and – as they put it – did not know how to behave properly.
The miscreant’s name was Brenda Harper.
Listening intently, David was able to pick up snatches of conversation.
As the rancour continued, he found it all too easy to identify what the causes of the outrage were.
Mrs Harper was young. He didn’t know how young, but it was apparent that she was regarded as a young chit, much younger than the other wives.
Secondly, she was pretty and her behaviour had been nothing if not flirtatious. This particularly enraged the older wives. She was not behaving with the staid formality that rightly went along with her – or their -status. She clearly laughed too much, which, for some reason, drew the officer husbands to her side more frequently than was proper.
David interpreted this as evidence that she was fun and liked a bit of fun. Something which he could naturally associate with neither his mother or the other wives who, even as they addressed the issue, were screwing up their faces and bitterly twisting their mouths into grim disapproval.
Finally, and here was the clincher. Young Mrs Harper wore dresses that were far too short. At her latest appearance, her dress was so short that whenever she leant over, her ‘knickers’ became visible. This revelation resulted in a moment of shocked silence.
