Singapore astonished him. The country was so different from anything that he had previously experienced that he felt dazzled, spellbound by it. Or at least, he was at first. Within three weeks, he learned that his experience was going to be much more restricted than he had first thought.
Although only fifteen, he was an astute observer. And he quickly realized that the English abroad find comfort in isolating themselves from alien surroundings. This defensive strategy probably reached its zenith in the military communities – and especially in the naval families abroad.
This was brought home sharply to David within a few days by the arrival of Mrs Jay, the wife of the base commander, and chairwoman of the ‘Naval Wives Abroad’ group.
Mrs Jay arrived clutching an array of cheaply printed leaflets which she handed over to David’s mother with an uncomfortable glance to where David sprawled in a rattan deck chair, his nose buried in a novel. Whilst he affected not to be paying attention, he was listening intently, for he had realized already that there was much to be learned in this way.
After a brief hesitation, Mrs Jay had settled onto a seat close to his mother.
‘Now, my dear, she began. ‘Let me first of all welcome you to Singapore. Is this your first time?’
His mother explained that she had visited a long time before and recognized that much had changed.
Mrs Jay smiled and nodded condescendingly and then had proceeded to run through a list of the do’s and don’ts for a naval officer’s wife in a foreign land. David listened enthralled as his mother was lectured on the ‘rules’ dictating dress and behaviour. There was a leaflet on how to treat the natives, how much to tip when necessary, which parts of town to avoid, how to dress.
After this lengthy lecture, the Commander’s wife finished by advising that it was far safer and more correct to spend ones days in the Officer’s Club at the naval base.
With a slight feeling of dismay, David saw that his mother was nodding fervently and lapping all this information up with relish.
In fact David was almost falling asleep when he realised that Mrs Jay’s voice had taken on a more confidential note. ‘Now, my dear,’ she murmured quietly, glancing uncomfortably once again in David’s direction. ‘We need to have a little chat about personal security.’
Metaphorically, David sat up, listening intently.
The Commander’s wife drawled on. ‘You must at all costs avoid the darker parts of the old town. There are gangs roaming the streets and street battles are common. Which is why the Officer’s Club is the safest place to spend your time. But what about the evening? Have you considered that?’
David’s mother frowned and shook her head.
Mrs Jay looked triumphant.
‘Quite! New arrivals never do. What do you think is going to happen if a man breaks into your bedroom one night?’...
David’s mother looked aghast. ‘My husband would deal with him, of course!’
Again, Mrs Jay looked triumphant. ‘And what if your husband was not there at the time?’
David’s mother looked bewildered.
‘We must be practical about these things,’ Mrs Jay urged. ‘We are British after all.’
‘Yes,’ David’s mother nodded unhappily glancing briefly towards David as he turned a page over slowly without looking up.
