“MOOOOOOO!” Don said under his breath, smirking and snickering as I walked by. I’d had the misfortune of having him put on another job I was running. He’d been starting to get more bold and I’d just about run out of patience.

“Alright,” I said. “This might be a new job site, but strikes from the last one carry over. I’m not going to give you another warning, I’ll just kick you off the job.” The smug little smirk never left his face.

“For what?” He asked, the disdain in his voice indicating that he didn’t believe me.

“Unprofessionalism.”

“Yeah, sure,” he said sarcastically.

“Try me, see what happens.” Without another word I turned on my heel before I punched him in his arrogant little face. I headed to see how the plumbers were doing with the trench they’d been digging.

After a few minutes of checking in and shooting the breeze I headed back to the trailer.

“MOO!” Don called out again as I walked by once more. I stopped and turned toward him.

“Pack up, you’re leaving,” I said forcefully. His smirk faded.

“What did you say?” He asked incredulously.

“I said you’re leaving. I’m kicking you off the job.”

“You’re not my boss.”

“I could kick him off the site, so I can sure as hell kick you off. So pack up. I don’t want to see you on any of my jobs again.” He scowled darkly for a moment, then smirked again.

“You’re gonna regret that, scarface...” He tapped his lips in a sort of mock thoughtfulness. “Come to think of it, it should be any time now!”

“What does that mean?” I demanded, now extra pissed from the ‘scarface’ comment.

“Kiss my ass.” He took off before I could pry any more information out of him. When he was gone I stormed off to the job trailer.

I spent the next fifteen minutes fuming until Don’s foreman came in.

“Well, you’ve definitely done me a solid by getting him off my crew...”

“I feel there’s a ‘but’ coming,” I growled.

“As I told you before, now you’re gonna have to deal with his dear-old-dad. He’s gotten worse lately too...”

“Ugh...”

“Don’t say this out loud, but I’ve started looking for another job. I’ve had enough of his bullshit. I never really used to care much, but since my kids started college they’ve made friends who are other species, and they’re good people. Kinda forced me to reevaluate things.”

“Glad you came around.”

“Yeah ... better late than never I suppose,” he said with a sigh. “Anyway, I’m down a pair of hands, not that they were worth anything to begin with, but now I gotta strap the tools on and get to work myself.”

“Alright, let me know if you need anything.”

“Yeah, you too.” He stood there for a moment. “I know you’re pretty buddy-buddy with that one electrician from the last job, but I’m on your side too.” I grinned.

“Thanks, I appreciate it.”

After he left I wasn’t as angry as I was earlier, but Don’s threat was still ringing in my ears. I buried myself in work for the rest of the day as a distraction, and by quitting time I’d almost forgotten about it.

After work I headed home. Ruth wasn’t there yet, but was supposed to be in only a few minutes, so after kicking off my boots I started going through the mail while I waited. Flipping through the stack, I paused when I came across two official looking pieces of mail. One had my name on it and the other had Ruth, but other than that they were identical. When I opened the one addressed to me my heart sank. I gripped the piece of paper until my hand started to shake. Then it dawned on me.

“That little worm!” I hissed. Just then the doorknob jiggled and Ruth came in.

“Hello, Dar ... ling...” she started greeting, but trailed off when she saw how pissed off I was. “What’s going on?” She asked, suddenly very concerned. I took a deep breath to keep myself from lashing out and handed her the notice with her name on it.

“Here.” I grunted.

“What’s this?” She asked.

“Just open it.” She did as I said, and upon reading the form the page slipped from her fingers.

“Our marriage is under injunction? What does that even mean...?” She asked.
