“Good morning, Sweetie,” David said softly from the bedroom doorway. I hadn’t been quite asleep, but I wasn’t really been fully awake either.
“Morning, Dear...” I replied with a sleepy groan.
“I’m making breakfast. How does pancakes and smoothies sound?” I looked toward David with a smile.
“That would be lovely, thank you.”
I laid in bed relaxing for another couple minutes, but eventually the delightful smell of breakfast prompted me to get up.
“Smells delicious,” I said, taking a big sniff when I got to the kitchen area. David turned and grinned as I walked in. I kissed him ‘good morning’ before taking a seat at the dining room table with a big smile on my face.
Our wedding had been two weeks ago, and we’d gotten back home from our honeymoon a couple days ago. I was still riding the high of being newlyweds.
For our honeymoon, we had rented a luxury cabin in the mountains with a balcony that overlooked more of the range. It was truly one of the most breathtaking views I’d ever seen. There was also something wonderful about the solitude.
Other than the occasions we went into town for either grocery or souvenir shopping, it was nice to just be ‘us’ most of the without anyone gawking. Being able to drop everything and make love whenever we wanted was also wonderful, including the balcony! I’d had some misgivings about that at first, but leaning over the rail, watching the sun set over the distant peaks while David lovingly filled me from behind was an experience that I was very thankful to have had, and one I would never forget!
I was snapped out of my reverie when David placed a tower of pancakes in front of me, along with some butter and syrup.
“Bon appetit!” He said cheerfully, making me smile.
By the time I was done buttering my stack, David was done making his and sat down at the table with both his stack and our smoothies.
As expected, breakfast was delicious. The pancakes were delightfully fluffy, and the smoothies had a perfect balance of sweet and tart. We were about halfway through when there was a knock at the door.
“Who could that be?” I mumbled around a bite of pancakes.
“I dunno,” David replied as he got up from the table. He opened the door to reveal one of our centaur neighbors.
“Hey, Lucas,” greeted David, apparently knowing this neighbor. “What’s up?”
“Hi, David.” He peered at me through the doorway. “I’ve been trying to catch you all week,” he said while I came to the door.
“Oh, sorry about that.” David put his arm around my waist as I stood next to him. “We just got back from our honeymoon!” I was a little surprised that David was speaking so forthcomingly about that.
“Wait, you two got married!?”
“Yep!” David exclaimed excitedly.
“That’s great, Congratulations!” Lucas said with a grin. Just then it dawned on me that Lucas was probably the neighbor that heard us during my heat cycle, which would explain his and David’s friendly rapport. However, I suddenly felt incredibly embarrassed and pressed in closer to David.
“I don’t know if you’ve met, but this is Ruth,” introduced David, gesturing toward me.
“I’ve seen you around, but it’s nice to finally meet you. I’m Lucas. My mate, Maria and I live next door,” he said, all but confirming that he was indeed the person whom David said had heard us.
“It’s nice to meet you too,” I managed to say, despite my embarrassment. He held out his hand for me to shake. I did, but I probably let go more quickly than was polite. The look he gave me implied that he noticed, but he just shrugged and thankfully didn’t seem offended.
“Anyway,” he continued, “I know at this point it’s pretty short notice but there’s going to be a block-party potluck this afternoon and I figured you two should get an invite.”
“That sounds fun,” replied David. Knowing that at least some of the people there have had heard us in the throes of passion, I wasn’t sure if I agreed, but I put on my practiced smile anyway.
“It will be,” replied Lucas. “Anyway, I’ve got to go. I hope to see you there!” With a wave he turned and left.
“Well, that’s cool!” Exclaimed David when the door shut. He had an excited grin plastered on his face.
“I suppose...”
“What’s wrong?” He asked.
“Was he the person you said heard us during my heat cycle?”
“Oh...” David replied, his face falling almost instantly. “Yeah, he was.”
“I thought so,” I said, staring off into the distance, wallowing in embarrassment. We stood in silence for a couple seconds before David reached up and tenderly cupped my cheek, gently guiding my face to look at him.
“Look, we don’t have to go if you’re not comfortable,” David said quietly, stroking my face with his thumb. I breathed a sigh of relief.
“Thank you, Darling.”
“Let’s go finish eating,” he said quietly. As he walked away, I could see disappointment in his slumped shoulders.
We continued eating our breakfast in silence. It was obvious that David really wanted to go, but gave it up without a word when I expressed my discomfort. I felt very loved, but also very guilty. Despite that guilt, and partially because of it, I said nothing throughout the rest of the meal.
After eating, I took the dishes to the kitchen and washed them while David booted up his new gaming console, along with a new game.
While cleaning up in the kitchen, I couldn’t help thinking about the party, and the look on David’s face. He’d stood up for and by me in every difficult situation we’d come across, and about halfway through the dishes I realized it was long past due that I did the same for him. When I’d finished cleaning, I took a deep breath and headed into the front room.
At first I just sat next to David and watched him play his game. It looked a lot like a game I tried, but eventually had to give up because it was too difficult. This game looked like it would also be too hard for me. After only a few minutes David lost to a hideous, roughly man-shaped monstrosity with a crude looking sword, and a very familiar looking YOU DIED banner manifested across the screen.
“Damn,” muttered David with a sigh.
“Darling, can we talk?” I asked before he got back into the game.
“Of course.” David said, putting the controller down.
“I really appreciate you agreeing to not go to the party...” his blue eyes drooped. It was subtle, but after all this time together I would have been blind to miss it. I took another deep breath before continuing. “But I think we should go.” David looked at me in confusion.
“But I thought you didn’t want to...” he said quietly. He was obviously still confused, but when I noticed a glimmer of hope in his face, I knew that what I said wasn’t a mistake.
“I was being silly...”
“No, being embarrassed is not being silly.” I was touched at how seriously he took my feelings. I affectionately brushed his cheek with the back of my knuckles.
“David, Darling, I very much appreciate your concern, and I certainly had misgivings at first, but when you think about it, the moment we introduce ourselves as a married couple, any ambiguity about how ... intimate our relationship has become is gone,” I said. A tentative smile crept onto David’s lips.
