“Well, this is it,” Tom said, parking the car.

“Yep, it is,” I said after taking a deep breath.

“Nervous?”

“Uh huh...”

“Having second thoughts?” I chuckled.

“Not on your life.” He chuckled too. I’d spent the night at his place to adhere to the tradition of not seeing the bride before the ceremony. Ruth wasn’t particularly happy about it, but Jill had offered to stay with her after the wedding rehearsal to keep her company. It was a good opportunity for Ruth and Jill to get to know each other better, which was something they were both keen on. It also had the added benefit of her being able to bring Ruth in my truck. Other than the SUV limo we booked for going between the ceremony and reception it was the only vehicle amongst us that had remotely close to enough headroom for her.

I looked out over the park we’d selected for the wedding. Most of the places I’d called weren’t willing to host our wedding on account of the interspecies part of our relationship, which was ridiculously frustrating, but the park was public property so we had no such issues. That said, it was actually a perfect venue for a summer wedding. It even had some out-buildings that were suitable to change in. All-in-all, I thought we got pretty lucky. Even the weather forecast was really nice!

“Hey, kid!” Shouted a familiar voice, and I looked over to see my parents. Mom was waving excitedly. I grinned and me and Tom headed over to meet them!

“Hi, Mom, Dad,” I greeted when we got closer. Mom squealed and rushed in to give me a big hug. After a moment I tried to let go, but she just squeezed tighter, making me chuckle. After a few more seconds she did end up letting go and backed away.

“Oh, I’m so happy for you, and I’m so going to cry!” She exclaimed. I laughed again because it looked like she was about to already! When I turned to Dad he didn’t look particularly excited, but there was a genuine warmth in his face when he held his hand out to shake. I wasn’t sure, but it almost looked like he was proud, which was definitely something to be happy about!

“Congratulations, David,” he said as I shook his hand.

“Not yet!” I joked.

“Close enough,” he replied quietly. For a moment it looked like he was going to say more, but he glanced over my shoulder and straightened up. “Looks like we’ve got company.” I turned to look in the direction he was looking and saw Ruth’s friends from back home and some bulls that I presumed were their mates getting off the bus. I waved and they started heading toward us.

Just as our groups made it to each other, Sara and John pulled up next to us. “Hey! Ready to get to work!” She said excitedly. I chuckled.

“Sure thing!” I said with a laugh.

“Nuh uh, not you. You need to get to your changing room and stay there. Ruth and your sister will be here shortly!” I shrugged, but wasn’t going to complain about being ordered to not work! Me and Tom grabbed our tuxedos from his car and we went to the building we’d designated as the men’s changing area.

Without having anything else to do we both got changed and ended up talking about the job we were working on until there was a knock at the door.

“Hey guy, can I come in?” Jill’s muffled voice said. Tom was closer, so he just opened the door.

“Hey Jill, how’s it going,” greeted Tom. The two of them always got along very well. They’d even tried dating for a bit, but mutually agreed that they preferred being friends. I had my suspicions that they’d even slept together at least once.

“Hi, Tom.” The hugged briefly, then Jill turned her attention toward me, putting her hands on her hips in a way that suggested that she was gonna give me some sass! She stood there just looking at me for a moment before she chuckled and relaxed her posture.

“You know what, I’m not gonna give you a hard time on your special day.”

“Thanks!” I said sarcastically with a snort.

“Seriously. You look good,” she said.

“Thanks,” I echoed, this time more sincerely. “How was your evening?” I asked. She smiled.

“It was actually really great. Ruth is very nice, and absolutely over the moon for you.” I grinned.

“Yeah, I know. I’m kinda ‘over the moon’ for her too.”

“I’m very happy for you,” she added softly.

“How is she doing?”

“She’s kinda nervous, but more excited.”

“Yeah, I get that,” I replied with a low chuckle. “I kinda feel the same.”

“That’s fair. I’d be concerned if you didn’t!” She joked. A moment later our conversation was interrupted by extremely heavy footfalls approaching the door.

“Aaaaaaaand that would be the father-of-the-bride!” I said, heading for the door. When I opened it I couldn’t help chuckling. On the other side was Ruth’s father, but there was absolutely no way he was going to be able to come in as he took up the entire doorway, and then some! He looked like he was taking much better care of himself than when we first met. I recognized his clothes from the photograph of him and Ruth’s mother. They were a bit outmoded and worn, but I could tell that he really put in some effort to look nice and the outfit was suitably dressy for the occasion. Though to be honest, I didn’t think he would’ve found a retailer that rented suits or tuxedos in his size anyway!

“David,” he grunted in greeting.

“Bruce,” I replied. “I’m glad you came, and I know Ruth is too.” He grunted an acknowledgement. “Have you seen her yet?”

“Yes, but only for a moment. Now she’s getting dressed with the other girls.”

“I really should get on that...” muttered Jill. We all watched as she hurried out. When she was gone, Bruce turned back to me.

“Can we talk for a minute?” He asked.

“Sure.” I spared a glance at Tom on the way out and he looked a little nervous for my sake, but I was much better at reading minotaur body language and facial expressions than he was. While I wasn’t quite sure about Bruce’s mood or intentions, there wasn’t any hostility in his voice or posture either.

We stepped around the corner of the building before turning to face each other. He spent a moment eyeing me up, much the same as when we first met, then heaved a sigh.

“I wanted to talk to you at the rehearsal yesterday, but there wasn’t any time to do so.”

“Yeah, we were all pretty busy,” I agreed.

“Anyway, I’ve never liked small talk, so I’ll get right to it. It probably won’t surprise you that I’ve been talking to Ruth on the phone once in a while since you visited.” I chuckled lightly.

“Yeah, she’s mentioned that.” He grunted an acknowledgment.

“Well, one of the things we’ve talked a lot about is you.” He paused and I waited patiently to see where he was going with this. “And what she’s told me has admittedly been ... reassuring.”

“I’m glad to hear that.” He heaved a massive sigh before continuing.

“I’ll be honest; I’m not sure this marriage is a good idea.” I frowned. “But, that has more to do with the world we live in, than anything to do with you. I’m just worried that you’re painting a target on yourselves.” His brow furrowed for a moment. “But, if you keep taking care of my daughter the way she says you have, then I’ll be satisfied with her having taken you as her mate.” I couldn’t deny the possibility of what he was saying, but I also appreciated the support.

“I will, I promise,” I said solemnly.

“I believe you,” he rumbled with a measure of respect in his eyes. A moment later my mom’s voice could be heard from the other side of the building.

“Do you know where David is?” She asked, presumably to Tom.

“Sounds like it’s time to get going,” I said with a chuckle. Bruce grunted in agreement.

“I’m right here,” I called out, rounding the corner with Bruce right behind me. Mom and Dad were both right outside the door to the men’s changing room.

“There you ... are...” Mom trailed off. Her and Dad eyed the enormous minotaur warily.

“We were just having a little chat. Everything’s good though,” I said, smiling reassuringly.

“I should go be with Ruth again,” announced Bruce, and he left for where the ladies changing rooms.

“Ok. It’s about time for things to start,” mom said, taking my hand to pull me away. “By the way, Ruth looks beautiful!” She added with a big grin. I glanced at dad and to my surprise even he nodded in agreement! I also grinned, knowing that for him to think so she had to look amazing!

Walking through where the ceremony was to be held, I saw that Sara and friends did a good job with the decorations. Rows of people sitting in chairs with white coverings flanked a red brick paver trail that led up to a the white trellis where we were going to take our vows. There was a lake behind it, adding a wonderful, romantic ambiance. I could feel my heartbeat slightly faster from nerves.

“Good afternoon, David, It’s good to see you again,” greeted Martin, the public official performing the ceremony. Like the venue, we struggled to find someone willing to marry us. We were fortunate that Serafina knew of Martin and was able to get us in touch with him. His son had been seeing a leonine for the last few years, and had never been happier. Sometimes it seemed like the cafe owner knew just about every mixed couple in the city!

Martin walked up and we shook hands.

“Nervous?” He asked.

“Yeah, but I’m very much ready for this.”

“Glad to hear it,” he said with a smile.

He gestured for me to stand where I was supposed to and I looked out at the small crowd we’d invited.

My parent’s were taking their seats in the front row alongside Jill. Raylund and Lorie were also there. Her pregnancy was really showing. When I caught their eye they waved. There were also some of my other relatives, namely aunts, uncles, and cousins. My parents had postponed their summer party on account of the wedding, so this was the first time I’d seen most of them since before I started dating Ruth. Apparently there’d been some real confusion when some of them received the wedding invite. Some even thought it was some sort of joke or prank at my expense! As such, I had my suspicions that a few of the people in the crowd came more out of curiosity than celebration and support.

On the other side of the aisle were a bunch of Ruth’s friends and their mates or boyfriends. I recognized some of them, but other than Rebecca, I didn’t remember any of their names. She also smiled when we made eye contact.

I was drawn out of my thoughts when music began, marking the official start to the ceremony. With our wedding party consisting of just Ruth, Tom, Sara, and myself, the initial procession was really short! Tom flashed me a grin when he passed while Sara discreetly shot me a thumbs-up. Once they were in position the music changed and everyone stood. I took a breath to steady my nerves, and then I caught the first glimpse of my bride. My mother was wrong, she didn’t look beautiful ... she was absolutely stunning!

Standing head and shoulders above most of those gathered, she looked like a goddess from some long-forgotten myth. Her father, towering over even her, only added to the illusion!

Her hair was done up into a voluminous mane of loose curls before flowing down her back and shoulders, and her fur practically shimmered in the sunlight. Hanging from her ears were a pair of earrings that sparkled in the sunlight, and even her horns were adorned with intricate copper bands inlayed with what looked like Mother of Pearl.

Her dress itself left her shoulders bare and was covered in beautiful white, beaded lace. As she was walking, I caught glimpses of her hooves, and it looked like she was even wearing some sort of white dress slippers!

The moment our eyes locked, a tearful smile came to her eyes. I could feel a dopey grin of my own sprouting as everything else just faded into the background.

After an agonizingly long procession, the two of them made it to the front of the crowd. They turned to each other and Bruce wrapped Ruth up in a tight, tearful hug. A moment later they separated. Bruce nodded toward me and I nodded in return. When he left to take his seat, Ruth walked in front of me and I took her hands in mine.

“You look gorgeous,” I whispered and Ruth’s smile widened.

Martin started the ceremony, but I was too busy gazing at my beautiful bride to pay attention to what was being said until it came time for the vows. I could feel my heart beat a little faster and my stomach filled with butterflies.

“Do you, David Durran, take Ruth to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold from this day forward; for better or worse; for richer or poorer; in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do you part?”

“I do,” I said with a slight tremble in my voice. Tom handed me Ruth’s ring, and she smiled widely as I slid it onto her finger then took her hands in mine again.

“Do you, Ruth Argus, take David to be your lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold from this day forward; for better, for worse; for richer, for poorer; in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do you part?”

“I do,” Ruth said, giving my hands a light squeeze before we let go. Sara handed her a ring for me and she slid it onto my finger. I looked down at the simple tungsten band and grinned before looking back up at Ruth.

“By the power invested in me, I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss the bride!”

I turned my head up while Ruth leaned down and her bovine lips tenderly met mine. A moment later I tried pulling away, but Ruth clearly wasn’t done. She reached out and pulled my face back to hers, passionately nipping and tugging at my lips with hers! I chuckled into the kiss and matched her enthusiasm. When we ended up separating after another few seconds, the bright smile on Ruth’s face made my heart melt.

We turned to face the crowd and everyone was on their feet in applause. Mom, as she predicted, was crying. Dad was a bit more composed, but was still grinning. I was most surprised to see how emotional Bruce looked. He actually had a hankerchief out and was blotting his eyes.

On the other end of the spectrum, some of my extended family were politely clapping, though the looks on their faces made it seem that they were struggling to believe what they’d just seen. It didn’t matter though. Ruth was my wife, I was her husband, and my heart was soaring!

Me and Ruth exchanged excited glances before we started heading back up the aisle, still hand in hand, to the waiting chauffeured SUV we’d booked. We piled in, followed by Tom and Sara, and then we were on our way to the reception hall.

The ride there was mostly filled with chatter from Sara, but I honestly wasn’t paying much attention. I was too preoccupied with Ruth and the smiling glances we kept stealing from each other. At some point Sara took notice.
