Knock knock!
“That’s probably Tom,” David said, turning off the game he was and heading to the door. I put down the book I was reading and also got up. He was getting picked up for his bachelor party, and while David told me that he refused to go to any of a ... particular kind of establishment, I knew what frequently went on at these sorts of parties and couldn’t help being a little nervous after the episode with Tiffany.
“Yo, Big Man! Wassup!” Exclaimed Tom from the now open door, pulling me from my thoughts.
“Sup’ Tom!” Greeted David enthusiastically.
“You are! Now go get your shotgun.”
“What?” Asked David.
“You’re gonna need it, but leave the shells. They’re on me today!”
“Cool!” David exclaimed, breaking out into a wide grin.
“Hey, Ruth, it’s nice to see you again” Tom greeted as David went to the spare room. He also motioned me over.
“It’s nice to see you too,” I greeted in return before walking to him and leaning down. “What’s going on?” I asked quietly. He replied in a low voice.
“He’s not supposed to know where we’re going, but I heard about your scare a few weeks back and thought you’d appreciate knowing that tonight will include absolutely no female ‘entertainers’ of any sort.” I sighed in relief.
“Thank you, Tom. I really appreciate that.”
“You’re welcome,” he said, smiling up at me. “Just Skeet, Scotch, Cigars, and a friend of mine’s got a twelve pound pork shoulder in the smoker as we speak!” I grinned approvingly of his choice of activities.
“That sounds wonderful, he will enjoy that.” Just then David came back out with his gun case, backpack and a big smile.
“Alright, we’re off,” David said.
“Have fun, Darling!” I replied.
“I’ll see you tonight. You make sure to have fun this evening too!” I leaned down to give him a quick kiss goodbye, then the two of them left. Having been reassured that I didn’t have to be nervous about David’s party, I sat back down in my chair with my book. I was trying to divert my attention away from the anxiety of my own imminent bachelorette party!
A couple hours later I’d not only finished my book, but had also gotten a good start on a new crochet project, when there was a knock at the door.
When I opened it I gasped. Not only was Sara there with Jenna and Kate from work, but so were Rebecca, Iris and Lauren from back home!
“Surprise!” Shouted Sara.
“Oh my,” I murmured. “I had no idea you’d all be here!”
“Of course! Wouldn’t have been much of a surprise if you did!” Joked Rebecca.
“It’s so good to see you here!” I exclaimed toward my old friends, overcoming my shock. “How’d you get hold of them?” I asked Sara. She smirked.
“Wouldn’t you like to know...” she replied, trying to tease me with a non-answer.
“You know what, I don’t even care! How’d you all get here?” I asked, knowing that they didn’t have cars, and the trip was over a day by bus.
“We found a passenger train route that has stops that are pretty close to both here and home,” answered Iris. “Tickets are very reasonable too.” My jaw dropped, realizing that I had an option to see my father without needing David to drive me if I wanted!
“That’s amazing! That must have started up recently then.”
“Yes, a couple years ago,” answered Rebecca. “I looked into it when I got the invite.”
Ahem
Sara cleared her throat, getting our attention.
“I can appreciate your need to get caught up with each other, but we really should get going,” she said with a chuckle. “Besides, we’ve got all night!”
“Okay then, where are we going,” I asked. Sara just made a zipping motion over her lips. I glanced at Kate and Jenna.
“We don’t know either. She’s been pretty tight-lipped about the whole thing,” Kate said, as if reading my mind.
“Alright, come on!” Sara said, grabbing my hand and pulling. I followed with a chuckle.
We made small talk on our way to the bus stop and during the ride to wherever we were going. Rebecca had told me over the phone a little while back that she’d gotten mated while I was away, but I was excited to learn that both Iris and Lauren had too within the last couple years. They generally enjoyed mated life, but we commiserated over the frustration that was our mated bonds. Eventually though, Sara stood up.
“This is our stop,” she said.
We all shuffled off the bus, and when I saw where we were I laughed.
“What’s so funny?” Asked Rebecca.
“This is where I first met David!” I exclaimed between chuckles, pointing at the bar in front of us.
“Hey! It is, isn’t it!” Jenna said, who also started giggling.
“I thought you said he answered an ad for a roommate,” Iris murmured.
“We’ll tell you the story inside,” Sara said quickly. “But first, I’d like to welcome you all to the official Ruth Argus Bachelorette party: a good old-fashioned bar crawl!” I inhaled slightly in apprehension.
“I’ve never done a bar crawl...” I said and Kate laughed.
“You’re in for a wild night!”
“Here’s what I propose,” Sara continued. “At each stop, minotaurs get two drinks, and humans get one. That way we should all be able to keep a decent pace with each other”
“That makes sense,” Iris said thoughtfully. “But how are we splitting the tab that way?” She asked. It was a fair question, though my thoughts started drifting elsewhere as I gazed at the somewhat rundown brick building. Running into David felt like a lifetime ago. In a way, it was. While things probably didn’t look very different from before David moved in, it felt like I was living a very different life.
“Alright, now that that’s settled, there’s one more thing before we go in...” Sara said with an evil looking smirk, pulling me out if my thoughts. She pulled a gaudy silver sash out of her purse. Once it was unfolded it read BRIDE TO BE in bold metallic pink letters. I groaned.
“Do I really have to wear that...?” I whined.
“Yep!” Exclaimed Sara amidst a chorus of giggles from the other girls. With a sigh of resignation, I took the sash and slipped it over my head.
“I think I need a drink now...”
“That’s the idea!”
We entered the pub and got several strange looks from the other patrons. Incidentally enough, the very same woman that was working the bar last time we were here was here again.
