“Hey, girl!” I turned around as saw Sara walking up. “There was only a few more minutes left in my shift, but it was nice to say hi before leaving. “You look cute!” I grinned, glancing down at the pastel green sundress I was wearing. I rather liked it myself, and thought it was perfect for the lovely spring weather that had been breaking.
“David and I are going out to dinner after work,” I replied.
“Ooh, have fun!”
“I’m sure we will.” Her face suddenly sobered up and looked behind me. I turned around and saw a well dressed, middle-aged woman approaching. It was Candice Wieter, the store manager.
“Hello, Ruth. Would you mind coming with me?” She asked. Her expression was difficult to read, which had me nervous.
“Yes, ma’am,” I answered without hesitation, then immediately followed her to her office. I spared a glance at Sara, but she shrugged, apparently not knowing what was going on either.
“Have a seat,” she said once we were inside, gesturing to a chair in front of her desk. It was oversized to fit me with a large hole in the back for my tail, which was appreciated, but that also meant that some planning had gone into this meeting. I wasn’t sure what to make of that.
I glanced around the office. I’d only been there a couple of times since I’d been hired, but it looked much the same as it had back then. There were all sorts of personal knick knacks on the desk and the wall, as well as pictures of a young boy and girl, whom I assumed were her kids.
A moment after I sat down, she did too.
“Well firstly, if the rumors are to be trusted, I believe congratulations are in order,” she said matter of factly.
“Congratulations, Ma’am?” I asked, not quite sure what she meant.
“Please, Don’t call me ma’am. That’s what you’d call my mother,” she said with a chuckle. “And I’m referring to your recent engagement.”
“Oh, yes. Thank you.”
“To the man that frequently drops you off, right?”
“Yes, that is correct. His name is David.”
“Well, good for you, and good luck.” I waited for her to continue, certain that wasn’t the only reason she brought me to her office. I was correct.
“Anyway, I called you in here because of a new initiative that corporate wants us to try pursuing.”
“What sort of initiative?” I asked genuinely curious.
“They’re calling it the ‘Exotics’ Department.” I looked at her quizzically. “It’s going to be apparel designed specifically for people like youself, as well as other species. I thought you might find it interesting.” My ears picked up.
“Yes, I do find that interesting!” I replied excitedly, my tail starting to swing behind me.
“I thought so,” she said with a grin. “I’ve also been as asking around, and by all measures you seem to be competent and well-liked. There’s even been a fair few positive store reviews online referencing ‘the polite lady who can reach the high things.’ Since you’re the only employee that truly fits that description, I think it’s safe to assume they’re referring to you,” she said with a chuckle. “As such, I’m offering you the opportunity to be manager of the new department.” My jaw dropped, but she continued, heedless of my shock. “The new position would be salaried and comes with a pay increase, though you’d be expected to work a more consistent schedule, which does include more hours.” My head was spinning. I would have never expected to be given the chance to advance like this! “However, you would be home most every evening, and I also figured that with your upcoming nuptials you’d appreciate that.”
“I mean, I don’t know what to say.”
“That’s fine,” she replied nonchalantly. “Go home, sleep on it, talk it over with your fiancé.”
“I will do that,” I said absently. She held out a slim folder.
“Here’s a copy of the contract, along with the details of the position’s duties.”
“Thank you very much,” I said, standing and taking the folder.
“Thank you, Ruth, for all your hard work.” She smiled and held out her hand. I shook it. It was tiny. “I look forward to your response, and I do hope you accept.” With that she went to the door and opened it for me. “And I apologize for keeping you past the end of your shift.”
“That’s quite all right. Goodbye.”
“Have a good evening.”
I left the office with a spring in my step and couldn’t wait to tell David! I rounded the corner past some shelving partitions and what I saw at the door made my heart sink.
David was there with his back to me, but so was Tiffany, and she was in her ‘flirty girl’ pose...
I stood there rooted to the spot as the scene played out. I couldn’t hear what was being said, but David was starting to look a little shy and blushy.
Tiffany stepped closer and the now-familiar heartache from my Mated Bond spread. It grew to the point where it wracked my body physical pain that threatened to bring me to my knees. Tears started welling in my eyes as she reached out as if to put her hand on his chest. David’s expression hardened and he swatted her hand away while taking a step back.
“Look, I said no!” He exclaimed, loud enough for me to hear. “I’ve got a good thing going with an incredible woman. So piss off!” A shiver ran through me as my brain registered the shift. There was no betrayal. Tiffany must have approached David and he was having none of it. My breath returned in hitched gasps, though I hadn’t even realized I’d been holding it. I started to stagger forward with uneven steps.
“You’re telling me that you’d pick that ugly cow over me?” Tiffany said, her face taking on a look of disgust.
“You knew, and still...” David hissed. His posture coiled, suddenly oozing barely restrained violence. Tiffany’s disgust melted onto something else ... fear.
Even in my trauma-induced state I knew that the trouble David would be in if he truly lost his temper wouldn’t be worth the momentary satisfaction of Tiffany getting what was coming to her, so I did the best I could to stumble faster on my rubbery legs.
“David!” I croaked. He turned around immediately and his expression went from rage to almost sheepish in an instant.
“Ruth! I, I’m really sorry. You were just late getting out so I thought I’d come in and...” he was cut off as I wrapped him up tightly in my arms.
“It’s ok,” I said, even though I was still trembling. “I heard enough.”
“Yeah, me too,” Sara’s voice hissed. David and I pulled away from each other to see her storming toward Tiffany with murder in her eyes, her face stopping mere inches from Tiffany’s face. “Break room, now!” Spat Sara, and eager to put as much distance between herself and David, Tiffany practically ran away. Sara looked at us and when she noticed how shook up I was, her face softened a little.
“You two should go home. I’ll deal with her,” she said, glaring daggers at Tiffany’s retreating form before following in a huff.
David took me by the hand, leading me out the door and to his truck. He opened the passenger door and helped me in before getting in himself.
“Hey, are you alright?” He asked. “You seem pretty rattled.” I rested my head against the headrest.
“I will be.”
“Hmm,” david grunted, not taking his eyes off me. He reached out and took my hand, which was still trembling. “That means right now you aren’t.”
“Not really. I got a glimpse of what Betrayal feels like.” His face fell, completely taken aback.
“I would never! She just came on to me out of the blue!!” He protested.
“I know you wouldn’t,” I reassured him, giving his hand a weak squeeze. “But that didn’t keep my subconscious from registering it for a moment.” He gasped.
“Oh no ... it’s the Mated Bond, isn’t it.”
“Yes. It only lasted a moment, but it felt like getting struck by lightning.”
“Ugh. I think we should get you home instead of going out,” he said, stroking the back of my hand with his thumb.
“I think I would prefer that,” I agreed. A moment later he started up the truck and we drove off.
On the way home I was surprised that the part of the earlier encounter that I couldn’t get out of my mind wasn’t what I expected.
“I can’t help thinking about what Tiffany said after you rejected her,” I said and David’s eyes narrowed.
“What about it?”
“Even though it still hurts, I got somewhat used to being called a cow when I first moved here.” David growled, but said nothing. “But, I don’t think I’ve ever been called ugly before ... I’ve always taken a measure of pride in my appearance.”
“As well you should,” David said quietly, but I could tell he was fuming. “You are gorgeous, and don’t let that trashy waste of space try to tell you otherwise!” He chuckled wryly. “She’s probably just jealous of what we have.” I cracked a little bit of a smile.
“That seems likely.”
A couple minutes later we pulled into the apartment and went inside.
