“Daaaaaaaaamn...” I muttered, staring at Ruth’s shapely posterior swaying as she sashayed down the sidewalk. She was even putting a flirty little side-to-side flip at the end of her tail in rhythm with her steps, which was driving me even more nuts! It was obvious she was teasing me, but I wasn’t complaining! However, she eventually rounded a corner out of line of sight. I turned back toward Tom and his guys and laughed. Tom was standing back chuckling behind his hand, but everyone else was gawking, clearly blown away by what they’d just witnessed!
“What with you guys?” I asked nonchalantly as I walked up.
“What was that!?” One of the younger guys asked when he’d managed to collect himself. I think his name was Steve.
“That was Ruth, my fiancé.”
“Wait, your, wh-wh-what?” Sputtered another, whose name I didn’t know.
“Did you know about this?” A third guy, whose name I also didn’t know asked, looking at Tom. He seemed more curious than anything.
“Yeah. We’ve met a few times,” he replied calmly. “She’s really nice.”
“Ok well, that’s kinda cool,” the guy replied. He certainly seemed less shocked than the other two, who were shaking their heads in bewilderment. Suddenly Steve burst out laughing, startling the rest of us.
“I get it!” He exclaimed. Tom and I exchanged confused glances. “Tall, thick ... and horny!” He laughed, holding his fingers beside his head, emulating Ruth’s horns. Tom and I both chuckled, remembering his joke from a couple weeks ago. The other bewildered guy clapped his hand to his forehead, but the non-shocked guy chuckled along when he saw that I was too.
“Well, she certainly knows how to shake it!” He added.
“Alright, that’s enough of that,” interrupted Tom before I could say anything. “Let’s go get some chow before the crowds roll in.” That got the guys’ attention and they headed out with Tom shaking his head as they left. I went to the job trailer, and after sending a quick ‘thank you’ message to Ruth I got started on my own lunch.
A little while after lunch Tom came into the trailer.
“Heyo,” he greeted. He seemed a bit more serious than usual.
“Hey, what’s up?” I asked, matching his energy.
“That was pretty ballsy.”
“I guess, but she’s gonna be my wife soon,” I said, assuming he was referring to kissing Ruth in public.
“Yeah, I know that. I guess I’m a little jealous that you’ve got things out in the open.”
“Ah. That.”
“Sure, we’re affectionate in private, but when we go out we act like we’re just friends,” he continued with a sigh.
“Yeah, that can be rough. It was like that with me and Ruth for a while both before and after we really considered ourselves an actual couple. That said, we agreed pretty early that we didn’t want to keep our relationship hidden forever, but we also agreed it was probably best to come out gradually.” He nodded thoughtfully. “That kind what you want?”
“I dunno. On the one hand it kinda sucks hiding, but on the other hand getting the kind of stares you and Ruth got earlier whenever you’re out doesn’t sound like a picnic either.”
“Yeah, there’s pro’s and con’s to each.”
“I know. She told me what Serafina and Van went through when they tried being open with their relationship.” I nodded, glad that Alice told him so we could talk candidly about some other couples hardships.
“Yeah, they said that it got ugly sometimes.”
“I know...” he sighed. “I can’t stare down three bikers in a bar like you can either, and Alice isn’t anywhere near as imposing as Ruth is to people who don’t know her.
“Yeah, that’s been brought up before too. Sounds like you’ve got a lot to think about.”
“Yep.”
“And then you’ll need to talk it over with Alice. Her opinion matters too.”
“Of course it does.” He said with a sour look that was annoyed that I would even suggest he’d think otherwise.
“Sorry,” I said sincerely. “You’re a better man that that and I know it.”
