“Crap!” Exclaimed David, waking me up with a start.
“Is everything alright, Darling?” I asked sleepily, as he pulled out of my arms with an uncharacteristic haste.
“I slept through my alarm,” he hissed.
“Oh...”
“Sorry for waking you. Just try to go back to sleep,” he added. Unfortunately, being awake when my mated bond set in meant I was likely to stay that way. He finished getting dressed and spared a moment to kiss my forehead, then ran out of the room. Another minute later I heard the front door open and close. I scrunched my eyes and groaned as the familiar ache made itself known.
I laid my head back down on the pillow to try to get another few minutes rest, but after about fifteen minutes of tossing and turning I gave up. I sighed, then left the comfort of my bed.
I made myself some tea, hoping that a little bit of caffeine might help. As I sipped I thought about how grumpy the few widowed female minotaurs I’d ever met had been. With the small taste I’d been given of what they went through all day, every day, I no longer blamed them for their perpetual moodiness.
I spent a little bit of time straightening up, including doing the dishes I’d left the night before. David and I had eaten dinner while watching a movie together and afterwards we got ... distracted.
Since both David and I generally preferred to keep a clean home, didn’t take long to get to tidied up. I didn’t have work until the later in the afternoon, so I sent a message to Sara. I hadn’t seen her since before David proposed.
‘Are you free today?’
‘Breakfast at Serafina’s?’ She replied after only a few moments.
‘Sounds good.’
‘Great! I still need to see the goods!’ I looked at her message quizzically for a moment, but chuckled upon realizing she was referring to my engagement ring! I admired it for a moment before sending one last message.
‘See you in a bit!’
After that I got dressed and headed out. A short bus ride later I’d arrived at Serafina’s.
“Good morning! You’re up early,” Serafina greeted cheerfully, slithering up.
“Good morning,” I replied, a little more sleepily. She glanced down at my hand and her mouth fell open slightly for a moment, presumably looking at my ring. When she looked back up she was beaming.
“How many today?” She asked with a coy smirk.
“Two. Sara is on her way.”
“Very good,” she replied looking almost disappointed.
“He’s at work,” I said quietly. Serafina brightened with a nod and led me to my usual table.
“Alright, Alice will be with you shortly.” She leaned in a little closer. “And I think we should get together again sssometime. It ssseems like we have much to talk about!”
“I would like that, and I’m sure David would too.” We exchanged another smile. As she slithered away Sara came in. Upon seeing me she quickly walked over and sat down.
“Hey, girl! Let’s see them goods!” She exclaimed without hesitation. I laughed at her single-mindedness and showed her the ring. She grabbed my hand and pulled it closer for a better look. I laughed. “Very nice! Simple, but elegant!”
“Thank you. He did well.”
I heard a familiar clicking on the floor as Alice came up from behind.
“Hi,” she greeted cheerfully.
“You’re in a good mood,” Sara said. “Things going well with a certain someone...?” She added with a leer, obviously referring to Tom. I rolled my eyes at her antics.
“Shhh, but yeah,” Alice answered quietly before turning her attention toward me. “I take it things are going very well for you.” She gestured toward my ring.
“Yes, they certainly are,” I replied with a grin.
“So this means you’re making your relationship public?” She asked, looking a little concerned.
“Yes, we’ve been gradually doing so already,” I replied with a nod.
“I see. Well, congratulations, and good luck!”
After that she took our orders and left.
“Is it just me or did she seem worried when you said you were going public?” Asked Sara.
“David and I have spoken to a few other mixed couples. Some of them have been subject to harassment, and sometimes even violence,” I explained.
“Oh ... I didn’t know that,” she replied quietly.
“She knows some of those people well, and might be worried about David and I.”
“ ... Are you going to be in danger?”
