It had been two weeks since the injunction notice, and while it was like a dark cloud looming over us, not much actually changed in our day to day life. It was Saturday and David was working. I wasn’t particularly fond of him working on weekends, but the extra money was likely going to be useful with our upcoming legal fees. We had also been spending much if our evening time looking for a lawyer to hire. Unfortunately, the hunt for one was proving to be difficult. Every one that we contacted we either couldn’t afford, or just didn’t seem interested enough in the case for us to trust them to get the job done. As frustrating as it was, things could have been worse.
On my way back from taking out the trash I picked up the mail. When I got back inside I saw that there was a letter from the landlord that was addressed to David. This was odd as the apartment was still solely in my name. I put the rest of the mail on the endtable and turned the envelope over in my hands and held it up to the light. I thought for a few minutes, buzzing with curiosity before chuckling. Given that we were married, at least in our own minds, I didn’t think David would mind too much if I opened it. After carefully tearing open the envelope, I unfolded the letter and as I read it my eyes kept getting wider ... It was an eviction notice for David, and he only had a month longer to stay. My knees went shaky and I collapsed on the couch. As the implications of the letter fully sank in, my heart tore and my nerves were on fire. My breathing came in shallow gasps and tears started welling up in my eyes as my Mated Bond went crazy!
With fumbling fingers I fished my phone from my pocket and after a couple tries I managed to call David. Unable to even muster the energy to bring the phone to my ear I put in on speaker.
“Hi, Honey. What’s up?” David asked.
“You need to come home...” I sobbed.
“Why? What’s going on?” He asked, his voice suddenly full of concern.
“Just ... come home.”
“I’ll be right there.” There was a click, then the line went dead.
I just sat there slouched on the sofa. I eventually managed to get my breathing mostly under control, but kept quietly sobbing until I heard David’s truck pulling in.
Despite barely being able to move only moments ago, I found myself suddenly springing to my feet. David opened the door and before he could even shut it I had pulled him tightly into my arms.
“Whoa, Sweetheart. I’m home, it’s alright. Everything’s gonna be alright,” he soothed. I spent the next couple minutes sobbing into his hair while he continued whispering words of comfort. Little by little, the effects of my Mated Bond died down to a mere fraction of what it had been.
David pulled away and looked at me questionably.
“Alright, so what’s going on?” I wiped the tears from my eyes. I opened my mouth to tell him, but couldn’t get the words out. I sniffed and retrieved the page from the couch. I handed it to him and as he read it I could see rage bubbling up inside of him. He looked back up at me with a barely contained fury in his face.
“We will fix this,” he growled. He scanned the document again before pulling out his phone and dialing a number that I assumed was on the notice.
“Hello?” He said after it rang for a moment. “This is David Durran.”
“Alright, we’ll be right there.” He then hung up.
“The lady on the phone says she was expecting my call, and asked for us to come to the front office.” I wasn’t sure what to make of all that, and still reeling from my earlier trauma, I just nodded dumbly. David’s face softened.
“Hey, are you ok?” He asked.
“Not really,” I whispered. He flashed me a small grin.
“We’ll figure this out, I promise.” He kissed me softly, then we left.
A few minutes later we’d arrived. A middle-aged centaur lady came out of an office in the back. Her black hair and fur contrasted starkly with her fair skin complexion.
“David Durran and Ruth Argus, correct?” She asked and David nodded. “Excellent, thank you both for coming. I’m Eleanor. Would you mind stepping into my office?” She asked emotionlessly, gesturing to the doorway she’d come from. David and I did as we were asked.
“Please, sit down.” She gestured to a couple of chairs as she walked around a centaur-sized desk. One chair was sized for me, and the other one for David. Eleanor knew this was coming and had time to prepare. That had me worried.
“I’d rather not,” David deadpanned, even as I slumped into the larger chair. Eleanor sighed.
“I understand you’re upset...”
“That doesn’t begin to cover it!” David snapped.
“I am not your enemy!” Eleanor said quickly, talking over David. The two of them stared at each other as if daring the other to blink. The centaur’s calm was in stark contrast to David’s anger.
“What do you mean?” I blurted, not having the emotional capacity for a prolonged fight. Eleanor glanced my way for a moment, with something akin to pity in her eyes before looking back at David.
“I don’t want to evict you. You two are model tenants, and the last thing I would ever want to do is to split up a loving couple. I just have no choice.” She sighed again. David was still smoldering, but he finally sat down. Glancing at each other, David took my hand in his. Eleanor smiled, but it seemed more bittersweet than happy. “Strictly speaking, these apartments are for centaurs.” She turned to talk to me directly. “but I fudged the rules for you to be able to stay here in the first place. I didn’t have the heart to turn you out when I found out you didn’t have anywhere else to go.”
“I didn’t know that...” I murmured. “Thank you.” She nodded, then turned to David.
