Everything explodes.

As I drove home, my mind was racing with thoughts of what I might find there: would Stephen be alone with Lucia? Would Richard already be there? Would there be more men? Would they already be naked and fucking Lucia? Should I call the police? Would they resist if I told them to leave?

I got home in no time, breaking all the traffic rules, weaving between cars at full speed, and ignoring STOP and YIELD signs and speed limits.

When I opened the door, I heard Stephen’s voice talking to Lucia in the living room. I couldn’t hear any other voices, so it seemed I had arrived in time. I walked into the living room and saw two coffees and a box of chocolates on the table. Lucia was sitting on the sofa, and Stephen was sitting opposite her in an armchair, chatting quietly.

I quickly walked over to Stephen, saying to Lucia, “Don’t you dare drink that coffee.” I slapped the box of chocolates, which flew all over the room, and threw myself at Stephen.

With the impact, he fell off the chair, and we both landed on the floor. I got on top of him and started punching him. I got the feeling that he was paralysed by surprise, because he only covered himself slightly, without trying to hold me down or hit me back, enduring the barrage of blows I was raining down on him. His face showed neither fear nor anger.

Seeing me attacking Stephen, Lucia started screaming, “Tom, stop! Have you gone mad? Stop right now! What’s wrong with you?”

I kept trying to hit Stephen, although I was only really hitting his arms, which he was using to cover himself.

Lucia then grabbed me by the shoulder and pulled me away, still shouting, until I calmed down a little and stood up.

“What’s wrong with you, Tom? Why are you attacking Stephen? He’s our friend and our guest. Have you gone crazy?” Lucia snapped indignantly.

“This scum wanted to drug you and fuck you!” I replied indignantly.

“What nonsense are you talking about?”

“Yes, he did it before, when you thought the chocolates had given you a reaction. He put a drug in your coffee, and tonight he was going to do the same thing,” I shouted angrily.

“Tom, what madness are you talking about? How could our friend do that? The liqueur in the chocolates caused a reaction with my medication.”

“And he’s been drugging us both, humiliating me and forcing me to have threesomes with him because he wanted to fuck you.”

“If that’s true, why didn’t you tell me? Why did you let it happen?”

“Because he blackmailed me with exposing my manipulation of the transplant lists and the Salif thing,” I blurted out without thinking and suddenly fell silent when I realised what I had said.

Lucia suddenly froze, silent, with an expression of deep surprise. I could tell her mind was processing what I had said.

“What do you mean by the lists? What did you do, Tom?” she shouted, leaning close to my face.

I looked down and didn’t answer.

“What did you do, Tom?” Lucia insisted, grabbing my shoulders and shaking me hard.

I didn’t dare tell her the truth, but finally I broke down: “I manipulated the transplant lists to put you ahead of Salif. But that was because the transplant for Salif wouldn’t have worked. I confirmed it with my professor. It would have been useless. I did it for you, all for you. I couldn’t bear the thought of you dying, and on top of that, uselessly.”

Lucia looked at me with an expression of hatred and anger that I had never seen on her face before. Then she started hitting me and insulting me while shouting, “Hijo de puta! Bastard! Murderer! You didn’t tell me anything, you liar! Cabrón! You killed Salif! Who gave you permission to play God? Disgraziato! Who gave you permission to play with other people’s lives? Figlio di puttana! Why didn’t you consult me? I would have refused. Liar! Son of a bitch! Bastard!”

All I could manage to say weakly was, “I did it for you ... Only for you ... I love you too much ... I’m sorry ... I’m sorry...”

She finally calmed down and collapsed on the sofa, crying. I approached her and knelt down, begging her, “I’m sorry ... I’m sorry ... Forgive me ... I’m so sorry...”

Little by little, Lucia stopped crying and looked at me; then I said to her, “But everything I’ve told you is true. Stephen found out and blackmailed me.”

At that moment, I noticed that Stephen had stood up and was watching everything with a satisfied look on his face, which Lucia couldn’t see because he was behind her. He then said in a sad tone, “Unfortunately, I didn’t know about these events. I did notice something strange in the records of the transplant lists, but knowing Tom’s integrity, I couldn’t imagine that there was anything as irregular as this. Now that I’ve heard it, I’ll be forced to report it to the hospital and the state medical association. I’m truly sorry to do this to a friend, but it’s my duty; besides, I wouldn’t want them to think that I’ve hidden something so irregular to help a friend.”

‘‘To help?’’ I said indignantly. ‘‘You’ve been manipulating me all along and forcing me to do things I would rather not do.’’

‘‘I haven’t done anything, Tom. I don’t understand why you’re saying that.’’

‘‘What about the coffee? I’m going to have it analysed. And the chocolates.’’

“Do whatever you want. Lucia makes it delicious, and they won’t find anything,” he replied. “And to prove it... ‘ he said as he approached Lucia’s cup and took a sip. Then he picked up a chocolate from the floor and ate it. “There’s coffee left in the cup if you want to check that it’s not drugged. And you have all the chocolates to analyse as well.”

I looked at him in complete surprise: I didn’t understand anything. I had clearly heard Richard talking about his plan, so I insisted, “I heard Richard talking to you at the hospital.”

“I’ve been here quite a while. I came to apologise to Lucia and to you for my behaviour the other day when I had the follow-up meeting with her. She can confirm that I haven’t spoken to anyone.”

I looked at Lucia and asked her, “He hasn’t spoken to Richard?”

“No. Why are you making all this up, Tom? Are you jealous? Is it to divert attention from the lists?” she replied.

“I swear I’m not making it up. Maybe while you were in the kitchen with the coffee.”

Stephen then showed her his mobile phone with the call list. There had been no calls in the last two hours.

“And where is Richard now?” I asked Stephen.

“You’ll see him now,” he replied, making a video call. When Richard answered, there was a lot of background noise, and you could see many people behind him.

He said hello and asked, “Hi Stephen, what’s up? I’m at a friend’s birthday party.”

I remained silent, not knowing what to say. Stephen replied, “Nothing, just a misunderstanding. Have fun,” and hung up.

I was completely lost; I didn’t understand what was going on, and I couldn’t find a way to prove to Lucia that I was telling the truth.

Suddenly, I thought of the pills Stephen gave Lucia, full of hormones to arouse her. I said, “The pills, Lucia! The pills Stephen gives you have hormones to arouse you and make it easier for you to sleep with him. Have them analysed.”

“The pills are to prevent rejection, Tom. But if you want, you can have as many as you like. I gave her a new bottle at her last check-up, so you can have them analysed as much as you like.”

His confidence about the pills, just as he had been about the coffee and chocolates, made me think that he wasn’t bluffing; surely there was nothing to detect.

Suddenly I began to realise that it wasn’t me who had caught Stephen and Richard by surprise. It had been an ambush, and I had fallen into it stupidly. That was why Stephen wasn’t defending himself or seeming surprised. Richard must have staged the conversation precisely so that I would hear it and appear to be the jealous and aggressive husband who ended up confessing what Lucia found most repulsive. They had pushed me when there was nothing that could compromise them: there was nothing in the coffee or the chocolates, and Stephen had just given her a new bottle of pills that surely no longer contained anything suspicious.

I was running out of arguments, and I could see Lucia’s face looking at me with a mixture of pity and rejection. Then I thought of the video Stephen had sent me and went to show it to Lucia.

“Look, this is proof of what Stephen did to you the other day after drugging you. I’m sorry; what you’re about to see is going to hurt, but you have to see it so you know I’m not lying,” I said as I clicked on the link where I had watched in horror as Stephen and Richard fucked and abused Lucia.

A video appeared on the screen showing Stephen and Lucia sitting on the sofa, drinking coffee and smiling, saying to me, ‘Hi Tom, we hope the transplant went well. Big hug. We’re thinking of you.’

“Yes, we recorded it to cheer you up, since you had to leave so suddenly and interrupt the evening. It was a way of telling you that we were with you,” said Lucia, in a tone somewhere between sad and resigned.

Then Stephen intervened, saying, “Tom, you’re the one who sent me my videos. Look, Lucia,” and showed the video he forced me to record and which I had to send with the text ‘Thank you for coming to fuck my wife. I thought I’d record a video so you’d have a souvenir’ and where you could see the second encounter the three of us had. He also showed the video he forced me to send him, where Lucia was using the strap-on on my ass. Lucia watched both videos in astonishment and snapped at me indignantly, “How could you record us without telling me? And on top of that, share it? I know Stephen was with us the first time, but you should have asked me. And in the other video, it was just the two of us. It’s a violation of my privacy. It’s outrageous!”

I tried to defend myself, “Stephen made me; I didn’t want to...” but that didn’t appease Lucia’s anger.

Stephen intervened, in a conciliatory tone, as he had done before, but clearly to push me further into a corner: “Don’t worry, Lucia, I haven’t shared it with anyone. I understood that Tom was going through a bad time, and now I understand the reasons better.”

Desperate, I suddenly remembered the pills I was taking. I did have them in my possession, and they had not been tampered with. I went to get them and put them on the table, saying, “These are the pills Stephen gave me, and they have caused my impotence.”

Lucia checked them, and then Stephen said, “Yes, Lucia, I must admit that I prescribed them. He came to me with a problem of totally uncontrolled blood pressure. It could have caused a heart attack. Indeed, those pills can cause erection problems. But personally, I would dare to say that your problem, Tom, was not the pills. I think that after causing Salif’s death, your remorse affected your blood pressure, and you didn’t dare confront Lucia, which caused your erection problems. Maybe that’s why you wanted someone else to intervene or introduced other erotic games.”

“That’s not true; it was all because of the pills,” I said desperately.

“The truth is, Tom,” Stephen said compassionately, “I think you should accept the seriousness of what you’ve done and not make up fantasies or excuses. Maybe you need to see a specialist to help you. I can give you the phone numbers of some good psychiatrists.”

I didn’t know what to say anymore. I had run out of ammunition to show Lucia all the evil things Stephen had done and how he had manipulated us. Stephen had carefully set the trap that I had fallen into like an idiot, and now I was left looking like the villain and Stephen like the understanding friend.

I looked at Lucia, making one last attempt, almost on the verge of tears, “Lucia, really, you have to believe me. I changed the lists to save you, and when Stephen found out, he threatened to report everything and have us both expelled from medicine. I had to agree to everything he demanded so that he wouldn’t report you too. I only lied to you about the lists; everything else is true, I swear.”

“And how do you expect me to believe you after lying to me about something so important?” Lucia replied sadly. “Stephen is an old friend who has always treated us well. It’s true that we’ve had those encounters behind your back, but it was after you introduced him to our bedroom and after you rejected me these last few weeks. As for all these stories you’re telling, I don’t know if it’s jealousy or a way of diverting attention.”

“I swear it’s all true, please, you must believe me,” I said weakly, in a whisper, still on my knees before her.

Lucia then stood up decisively, saying, “Look, Tom, it seems to me that you are no longer the noble and good man I fell in love with, sincere and willing to care for others. You seem to have turned into someone who is cruel, who makes decisions about other people’s lives and who takes refuge in sexual games and perversions, which I really don’t know how I have admitted. I think I’m going to get out of here.”

Lucia headed for the bedroom, and I stayed on the floor, slumped and defeated. Stephen came up to me smiling impudently, with an air of repulsive victory, but I was too sunk to do anything. He came up beside me and said in my ear, “You’ve fallen like a rabbit in a trap. You thought you were the knight in shining armour who would save the damsel in distress from the dragon, and you threw her into the dragon’s mouth.”

Lucia came back from the room with a suitcase and said to Stephen, “Would you mind letting me stay at your place?”

“With pleasure,” he replied.

In a last desperate attempt, I said to Lucia, “Please talk to my cousin Grace; she will explain to you what happened’.

“She always agrees with you about everything; I don’t know why. She’s like your accomplice, so I don’t know if I can trust her. Goodbye, Tom,” Lucia replied very seriously.

They both left, and I was left alone in the house, not moving, kneeling on the floor; I had never felt so bad in my life. I didn’t know what to do or what to say.

I had never been a drinker, but it occurred to me that it was an option, so I went and got one of the bottles Stephen had brought on one of his visits. I drank the whole bottle slowly, sip by sip, while still crying and trying to think about what I had done wrong. When I finished it, I felt horribly dizzy.

Suddenly, my mobile rang. I picked it up thinking it might be Lucia, but it was the voice of Josephine, a fellow surgeon at the hospital.

“Tom?” asked Josephine in an anxious voice.

“Yeeessss...?” I mumbled.

“I’ve been called because it seems you had an operation and you’ve left the hospital. The patient is already on the operating table, and the donor organ has arrived.”

“I ... I can’t gooo. I’m soooo drunk, and I ... I couldn’t gooo, let alone ... operate,” I said in a breathy, alcoholic voice.

“It was to confirm if you were finally coming. They called me because since I live next to the hospital, I could be there in five minutes.”

“Yesss, I’m s-sorryyy ... Luciaaa left meee...” I sobbed.

“I’m sorry. I’m going to the hospital. I’m afraid there will be serious repercussions for abandoning

a patient on the operating table. Goodbye,” Josephine ended the call.
