I was meeting her at Lesha Square, which was close to my quarters.
First I saw the provincial governor. He was escorting her. And then I saw her. Look, I find Vidrunian women very attractive, but she was ... more so.
Vidrunian women are big. She was about my height, 6’3”, and very voluptuous. She had long, wavy red hair above slightly elongated ears. Her skin was a pale blue, with bioluminescent dark blue markings occasionally skipping over her skin. Those markings changed color with her mood; dark blue was neutral. She had huge, deep, violet eyes with flecks of gold and silver. She was absolutely stunning.
The Governor led her over to me and spoke. “Todd Romero. This is your bondmate, Princess Yura.”
“Nice to meet you,” she said, with a blinding smile, in the soft melodic tones of her people, holding out her hand in the Human manner.
“Likewise, Your Majesty,” I said, giving her a bow and shaking her hand. It was warm and surprisingly soft. “But how did I rate a Princess?” I had to ask.
“Well, I’m in the royal family, but barely,” she said with a melodious giggle. “My branch of the family tree is way over there,” she said, pointing out into space. “I think I’m 47th in the line of succession. I’m like a great-niece.” She paused. “But you rated me because I picked you.”
I reacted badly to that. “What, you figured I’d resist less if they sent me royalty? That figures.”
“No. You do not want this bond?”
“No.”
She got very stiff, and her skin patterns stilled. “I am sorry that I am not attractive to you,” she barely got out.
Hey. I was upset and feeling pressured, but I’m not an asshole. Plus, it wasn’t true. “No, no, no,” I said. “This has nothing to do with that. In fact, the exact opposite. You’re stunning. Gorgeous. If this were just about attractiveness, we’d already be bonding.”
She gave me a little half-smile, while her cheeks filled with a faint teal blush. “Oh. A lot of Humans find Vidrunians ugly or disgusting or too large.”
“Not me.”
“So why don’t you want to bond with me?”
“It’s not you. I don’t want to bond with anyone.”
“Oh.”
“Let me show you my quarters. We can talk there. This is too public.”
We got there. I showed her the spare room so she could drop off her bag. Then we settled at the table with a couple of mugs of taspar, a Vidrunian beverage that acts like coffee but actually tastes good.
“Why don’t you want to be bonded?” she asked.
“I like being alone. I like my freedom. I gave my heart to someone once and I got it back in pieces. From what I know of Vidrunian bonding, it sounds intrusive. All of the above.”
