The bathroom was small—a private washroom adjoining Margaret’s office, with a single sink, a mirror, and a cabinet stocked with spare towels. Steve stood at the sink, splashing cold water on his face, watching the droplets race down his cheeks and drip into the porcelain bowl.

Behind him, Margaret moved slowly. She had found a washcloth and was wiping the tear tracks from her neck, her shoulders, her chest. The movements were mechanical, but even in her vulnerability, she looked sexy as hell. Her beautiful tits still glistening with the dampness of her grief, and Steve felt a war ignite inside him. He wasn’t sure if he wanted to hug her or fuck her. The primal urge to bury his face between those heavy, swaying breasts battled with the tenderness he felt for the woman who had just bared her soul to him.

He decided to wait on both. She had just gone through an emotional journey and needed time. He clenched his fists at his sides, feeling his 9-inch cock strain against his jeans, a cruel reminder of what his body wanted versus what his mind knew was right. For now, he would give her space. But as he watched her slowly dry herself, he couldn’t shake the image of him taking her from behind.

Steve caught her reflection in the mirror, and for a moment, he stopped cold. His own eyes stared back at him—eyes that had seen too much in too little time. He looked at the man in the glass, a man who, just a few weeks ago, had been a virgin surrounded by a bevy of beautiful, sexy family members, blissfully unaware. He had finished his first year of college, come back earlier than expected, expecting hugs and home-cooked meals. Instead, his safe, normal world had collapsed around him. He had learned that a thick wool had indeed been pulled in front of his eyes, a comfortable lie woven by the very people he trusted most.

It hadn’t been easy, learning the truth. His mind had reeled, his stomach had churned, and his heart had felt like it was cracking in two. But he had done a lot of soul-searching in that motel room, in the quiet hours of the night when his phone buzzed with ignored calls. He had learned to change how he viewed his family, his surroundings, himself, and even the world. And as he stood there now, with the ghost of his mother’s touch still tingling on his thigh, he knew it was far from over. The journey had only just begun, and he was already in too deep to turn back.

She met his eyes for a brief moment in the mirror’s reflection, then looked away, her cheeks flushing with a mixture of shame and hunger.

The silence wasn’t uncomfortable. Steve was learning that those silent moments were precious in his hectic new life, and he appreciated them. He dried his face with a paper towel, the rough fibers scraping against his skin, then turned.

Margaret was pulling her blouse back on, her fingers fumbling with the buttons. He watched her hands tremble, watched her struggle with the third button, watched her let out a frustrated huff.

He stepped forward. “Let me.”

She froze, her hands dropping to her sides. Steve moved in close, his fingers finding the tiny pearl button, sliding it through the loop with practiced ease. He worked his way up, one button at a time, his knuckles brushing the soft fabric stretched over her ribs.

When he reached her collar, he smoothed the fabric flat, his palms resting on her shoulders for a moment longer than necessary.

“There,” he said softly.

Margaret’s breath hitched. Her hand came up to cover his, her fingers cold against his skin.

“Thank you,” she whispered.

He nodded. No words needed.

They finished dressing in that same quiet rhythm—Steve pulling his shirt over his head, Margaret smoothing her skirt down her hips. Heather had already excused herself to the hallway, giving them space. Luisa had followed, her posture still coiled tight with unspent fury.

Steve held the door open for Margaret. She paused at the threshold, her hand resting on the frame, and looked back at her office—the glass desk, the leather chairs, the window overlooking the factory floor. Her refuge from the gilded cage that had been her marriage for several years.

Then she stepped through.

The metal stairs groaned under their combined weight as they descended. The factory noise grew louder with each step—the clatter of machinery, the hiss of pneumatics, the distant shouts of workers coordinating shipments. The air thickened with the smell of cotton dust and industrial lubricant.

Margaret’s foreman was near the main floor, a clipboard in his hand, barking orders to a pair of workers loading bales onto a flatbed. He was in his late fifties, with a weathered face and arms thick from years of manual labor. His name was Carl—Steve remembered Ricardo mentioning it during the tour.

Carl spotted them first. His eyes narrowed, scanning Margaret’s face with a concern that cut through the factory din. He handed his clipboard to a nearby worker and walked over, his boots heavy on the concrete.

Margaret’s heels clicked to a stop. She opened her mouth, closed it, then tried again.

“Carl, I need to—” She paused, swallowing. “I’m going to take a few days off. Personal reasons.”

Carl’s brow furrowed. He studied her for a long moment, his eyes traveling over her face, lingering on the redness around her eyes, the slight puffiness of her cheeks. He didn’t ask questions. He didn’t probe.

Instead, he let out a slow breath and nodded.

“About damn time, boss.”

Margaret blinked. “What?”

Carl scratched the back of his neck, looking almost sheepish. “I’ve been watching you, Margaret. You’ve been running on fumes for months. Coming in early, staying late, snapping at the crew, jumping at every phone call.” He shook his head. “I was getting worried. We all were.”

Margaret’s lip quivered. She pressed her lips together, holding it in.

Carl reached out and placed a heavy hand on her shoulder. “Take your time. We’ll hold the fort. This place ain’t gonna fall apart without you for a few days.”

A single tear escaped, tracing a quick path down her cheek. She wiped it away with the back of her hand, a laugh bubbling up from somewhere deep in her chest—wet, surprised, relieved.

“Thank you, Carl.”

He squeezed her shoulder, then released it. “Go on. Get out of here. Enjoy the sun or something. You look like you haven’t seen it in years.”

Margaret laughed again, and this time it sounded lighter. She turned to Steve, and he saw something new in her eyes—a purpose.

“Ready?” he asked.

She nodded. “Ready.”

They walked through the factory floor together, past the spinning frames and the carding machines, past the workers who nodded at Margaret with a mix of respect and quiet concern. The afternoon light spilled through the grimy windows, casting long golden rectangles across the concrete.

Luisa fell into step beside them, her eyes scanning the perimeter with professional detachment. Heather was waiting by the entrance, her phone in her hand, her expression softening when she saw them emerge.

The car was warm inside, the leather seats creaking as they settled in. Luisa slid into the driver’s seat, adjusting the rearview mirror. Heather took the passenger seat, leaving Steve and Margaret alone in the back.

Margaret leaned her head against the window, her gaze fixed on the factory as it receded in the side mirror. The building grew smaller, the red bricks fading into the haze of the afternoon, until a turn swallowed it completely.

She let out a long, shuddering exhale.

Steve said nothing. He just reached over and took her hand, his fingers lacing through hers.

She squeezed back.

The drive back to the hotel was quiet. Luisa navigated the streets with practiced ease, weaving through the sparse afternoon traffic. Heather made a few calls in hushed tones, rescheduling appointments, offering apologies that sounded genuine even through the phone’s tinny speaker.

Margaret’s hand never left Steve’s.

When they pulled into the hotel’s underground parking garage, the fluorescent lights hummed overhead, casting pale shadows across the concrete. Luisa killed the engine, and the sudden silence was almost deafening.

Heather turned in her seat, her eyes landing on Margaret with a warmth that softened the lines of her face. “We have a suite on the top floor. Two bedrooms. Plenty of space.”

Margaret’s brow furrowed. “I don’t want to impose—”

“You’re not imposing,” Heather said, her voice firm but kind. “You’re family now. Or you will be. And family takes care of each other.”

Margaret’s throat worked, but no words came out. She nodded, a quick, jerky motion, and let Steve guide her out of the car.

The elevator ride was silent. The doors slid open onto a quiet hallway, the carpet muffling their footsteps as they walked to the suite. Steve unlocked the door, holding it open for Margaret.

She stepped inside and stopped.

The suite was expansive, with floor-to-ceiling windows that offered a panoramic view of the Raleigh skyline. The setting sun painted the room in shades of amber and gold, casting long shadows across the hardwood floors. A plush sofa sat in the center of the living area, flanked by armchairs and a low coffee table. Through an open door, a king-sized bed was visible, crisp white linens inviting and fresh.
