Margaret’s hand was still wrapped around him, her thumb slick with the bead of moisture she’d drawn from his tip. She’d smeared it in a slow circle, her breath warm against his shoulder. And then—the wetness on his skin had changed. Warm, but different. Salt-slick.
A sound broke out of her. A strange, hitching sob. Her fingers released him like he’d burned her, and she pressed both palms over her face, curling her shoulders forward as if to make herself smaller.
“I’m so sorry. I’m ruining everything.”
The words came out cracked, half-swallowed. Tears streaked between her fingers, cutting clean lines through the flush on her cheeks. She was still on her knees, completely naked
Steve stared down at her. She looked small in vulnerable. His cock, which had been straining and thick with blood seconds ago, was already losing its urgency. Something else was filling his chest now. Compassion and tenderness.
Heather had gone still beside them, her blouse open, her lips parted. She met Steve’s eyes and gave him a slow, uncertain shrug—Steve interpreted the shrug as a silent “I don’t know either”
“Margaret.” Steve turned carefully, his jeans and shirt somewhere on the desk. He didn’t care. He crouched so he was closer to her level, his hands finding hers where they hid her face. They were cold. Trembling.
She shook her head, refusing to look at him.
“Hey.” He pulled one of her hands away, then the other, holding them both in his. Her face was wrecked—streaked with tears, her bangs plastered to her forehead, her eyes red-rimmed and swollen. And still beautiful. Still striking. But fragile in a way that made his throat ache.
“Please. Don’t be sorry.” He kept his voice low and even. “I know I’m kind of a stranger. But I’m here, and I’m listening. That’s not much, I know. But I won’t judge. If you want to talk.”
Her lower lip quivered. Then a fresh wave of sobs rolled out of her, and she collapsed forward, her forehead landing on his bare shoulder. He caught her easily, one arm sliding around her back, the other cradling the base of her skull. Her tears were hot against his skin, smearing across his collarbone.
“It’s not—” she choked, then started again, her voice muffled. “I thought I could do this. I’ve thought about it for weeks. Months. You’re so—I was ready. I was. And then I saw you, and I just—”
Another sob cut her off.
Steve kissed the top of her head, then pulled her closer. He whispered against her hair—soft, meaningless reassurances. It’s okay. You’re okay. Take your time. Words meant only to steady her.
Steve pulled Margaret gently to her feet, his hands steady on her arms as he guided her toward the leather couch. She moved like a woman in a daze, her legs unsteady, her breath still hitching in shallow, tear-clogged gasps. He eased her down onto the cushion, and she sank into it, her naked body curling slightly inward, as if trying to hide from the weight of her own confession.
Behind them, the rustle of fabric broke the silence. Steve glanced over his shoulder. Heather was already pulling her blouse closed, buttoning it with quick, efficient movements, her face unreadable. Luisa had found her dress somewhere near the desk and was stepping into it, her movements slower, more deliberate, as if she were giving Margaret space to breathe. Neither of them spoke. There was no judgment in their eyes, no frustration at the interrupted heat. Just a quiet, shared understanding that the moment had shifted.
No one had sex on their mind anymore.
Margaret cried and cried while her head rested on Steve’s shoulder. The sobs came in waves—deep, shuddering things that racked her entire frame, her tears hot and slick against his bare skin. He didn’t speak. He just held her, one arm wrapped around her back, his other hand cradling the back of her head, fingers threading gently through her hair. He rocked her slowly, a soft, familiar motion.
Minutes passed. Maybe longer. He lost track. Her breathing grew heavier, the sobs tapering into wet, uneven sighs. Her body slackened against his, the tension draining out of her muscles one by one. Her hand, which had been clutching his forearm with desperate strength, went limp.
She had fallen asleep.
What happened? One moment she was playful and in heat, then suddenly she broke apart. He thought, his mind turning the question over like a stone. She was so eager. Her mouth on me. Her hands. And then—nothing. Just tears.
He looked down at her sleeping face, peaceful now, the lines of anguish smoothed away. Her lips were slightly parted, her lashes still wet. She looked younger like this. Vulnerable. Beautiful.
Steve exhaled slowly, pulling her closer. He didn’t have answers. But for now, holding her felt like enough.
Heather moved quietly, slipping off the couch and padding across the room to the private bathroom connected to the office. She returned with a damp washcloth, warm and steaming slightly in the cool air of the room.
She knelt beside the couch and gently dabbed at Margaret’s face, wiping away the tear tracks and the smeared mascara. The touch was tender, almost motherly—slow, careful strokes across her cheeks, her forehead, the bridge of her nose.
Margaret’s eyes flew open.
“Oh my god!” she gasped, her voice raw and cracked. She tried to sit up, to pull away, her hands flying to cover her face again. “I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to—I’m so sorry—”
“Shhhh.” Steve held on to her, his arm tightening around her back, keeping her pressed against his side. “It’s okay. Don’t worry about it.”
He waited until her breathing steadied, until her hands lowered from her face and she looked at him with those red-rimmed eyes. He met her gaze, held it. Soft. Patient. Unwavering.
“Wanna talk about it?” he asked.
Margaret’s lip trembled. She glanced at Heather, then at Luisa, both of them watching her with quiet, open faces. No judgment. No impatience. Just waiting.
She took a shaky breath, then another. And then, slowly, she nodded.
Margaret’s eyes stared downward, fixed on some invisible point on the leather couch between them. Her voice, when it came, was raw but gathering strength with each word.
“My husband and I have been trying to conceive for several years now.” She paused, swallowing hard. Her fingers twisted together in her lap. “After a few years, it was becoming obvious something was wrong.”
Steve remained still, his hand resting gently on her shoulder, not rushing her.
“That’s when Henry became more distant,” she continued, her voice picking up strength. “He seemed pensive. We talked less and less, rarely went out.”
Luisa appeared beside them, moving silently. She held out a glass of water, cool and clear. Margaret looked up at the woman, a fragile smile flickering across her lips. She took the glass gratefully, her fingers wrapping around it, and drank it all in long, desperate gulps.
When she finished, she held the empty glass in her hands, staring into it as if searching for answers in the bottom. Her breath steadied. The tears had stopped, but her knuckles were white where she gripped the glass.
