The factory air was thick with the smell of raw cotton and machine oil, a scent that clung to the back of Steve’s throat as Ricardo led them through the labyrinth of industrial equipment. Overhead, fluorescent lights hummed, casting a pale, clinical glow over the vast space.

Steve’s eyes wandered, taking in the sheer scale of the operation. Enormous bales of cotton sat stacked near the far wall, their fibrous surfaces catching the light in soft, dusty halos. A forklift hummed in the distance, its operator navigating the narrow aisles with practiced precision.

“This is where the magic happens,” Ricardo said, his voice rising above the mechanical clatter. He gestured toward the first machine—a hulking beast of steel and gears, its rollers turning with a steady, hypnotic rhythm. “The bales get fed in here first. Razor-sharp blades separate the fibers, break apart the clumps. Then they move to the carding machines.”

Steve stepped closer, watching as a thick mat of cotton was drawn into the machine’s maw. The blades whirred, a high-pitched shriek that set his teeth on edge, but the result was mesmerizing—a uniform, fluffy layer emerging on the other side, smoothed and separated.

“The carding machines comb the fibers,” Ricardo continued, pointing to a series of rotating drums covered in fine wire teeth. “They remove the short strands, align the longer ones. What comes out is a continuous web of parallel fibers. The quality of the yarn depends entirely on how well this step is done.”

Steve nodded, his gaze fixed on the process. The web of fibers moved with hypnotic precision, sliding over rollers and through guides, a silent ballet of industry.

“From there,” Ricardo said, leading them to the next machine, “it goes to the draw frames. They blend the fibers, stretch them, make them uniform. Thickness, strength, consistency—all controlled here.”

He pointed to a row of machines where multiple strands of fiber were being merged, pulled, and stretched into a single, coherent sliver. The sliver coiled into large cans, waiting for the next stage.

“And finally,” Ricardo said, a note of pride creeping into his voice, “the spinning frames.”

They stopped before a long row of machines that hummed with a higher, more urgent pitch. Bobbins spun at blinding speeds, their whir creating a continuous, keening sound that vibrated through the floor. Slivers fed into the frames, and from the other end emerged fine, uniform yarn, winding onto bobbins in perfect, concentric layers.

“Each bobbin holds hundreds of yards of yarn,” Ricardo explained, his hand resting on the frame of the nearest machine. “Ready to be shipped to weavers, knitters, anyone who needs quality thread.”

Heather’s hand found Steve’s shoulder, a gentle squeeze that pulled him from his reverie. “Come, my love. Margaret’s waiting.”

They left the factory floor, the noise fading behind them as they crossed through a wide, open warehouse space. Dust motes danced in the shafts of afternoon light that slanted through grimy windows. Their footsteps echoed against the concrete floor, a hollow, rhythmic beat.

At the far end, a set of metal stairs spiraled upward, leading to a mezzanine level that overlooked the entire floor. The stairs groaned under their weight as they climbed, the metal vibrating with each step.

Ricardo reached the top first, holding open a heavy door. “After you,” he said, his voice tinged with something like reverence.

Steve stepped through.

The office was a study in contrasts. The walls were exposed brick, warm and rustic, but the furniture was sleek, modern—a glass desk, leather chairs, abstract art on the walls. A large window overlooked the factory floor below, offering a bird’s-eye view of the entire operation.

And standing behind the desk, her arms crossed, a smile spreading across her lips, was Margaret Doyle.

She was in her mid-forties, Steve guessed, but the years had treated her with uncommon kindness. Her mahogany-brown hair fell in polished waves that framed her face, a clean, modern set of bangs skimming her eyebrows. Her expression was warm, inviting, a smile that reached her eyes—eyes that held the faint, honest etchings of crow’s feet, adding a layer of maturity and wisdom to her gaze. She wore a tailored blazer in a deep burgundy, a cream blouse beneath, and a pencil skirt that hugged her hips with professional precision.

“Heather!” Margaret’s voice was rich, melodic, with a warmth that seemed to fill the room. She crossed the floor in quick, confident strides, her heels clicking against the polished concrete. She embraced Heather with genuine affection, her arms wrapping around the older woman with a familiarity that spoke of years of friendship.

Then she turned to Steve.

Her hand extended, her fingers slim and elegant, a silver ring catching the light. “We finally meet! I’ve heard a lot from your grandmother. Especially lately.”

Steve took her hand, her grip firm and warm. “All good things, I hope.”

Margaret’s laugh was a low, throaty sound that seemed to vibrate in the air. “Mostly good. Some ... surprising. But I’ve learned to expect the unexpected from Heather.”

Heather chuckled, moving past them to settle into one of the leather chairs facing the desk. “I’ve never given you reason to doubt me, Margaret.”

“No,” Margaret agreed, her eyes still fixed on Steve. “You haven’t.”

She released his hand, but her gaze lingered, traveling over him with an appraising slowness that made his skin prickle. “You’re taller than I expected. Heather said you had a presence, but she undersold it.”

Steve felt a flush creep up his neck. “I try not to disappoint.”

“I don’t think you could,” Margaret said, her smile widening. She gestured to the chairs. “Please, sit. We have much to discuss.”

Luisa moved first, her posture relaxed as she glided across the room. She settled into a chair near the door, crossing one leg over the other with an easy grace, her hands resting calmly on her thigh. Her eyes still swept the room with practiced efficiency. Margaret returned to her chair, her fingers steepling on the desk. “So, Steve. Your grandmother tells me you’ve been ... busy.”

Steve glanced at Heather, who returned his look with an innocent smile. “I’ve been learning,” he said carefully. “Understanding the clan, the traditions, the challenges.”

“And the women,” Margaret added, her eyes twinkling.

Steve’s jaw tightened, but a sly grin crept across his lips. “Yes. And the women,” he said, letting the words hang with a teasing lilt.

Margaret nodded slowly, her smile softening into something more contemplative. “I’ve been impressed with what your grandmother told me about you,” she said, her voice measured, deliberate. “But I don’t know why you are presenting yourself to the Council at such a young age. What do you bring to the table?”

Steve relaxed into his chair, the tension in his shoulders easing as a confident smile spread across his lips. “I believe I can bring another perspective to all this.” He leaned forward, his elbows resting on his knees. “Mainly, I’ll be the first representative that came out of the eighteen-year-old rule. Most of my life has been spent outside the O’Connor clan, living among the ‘regular’ world. That gives me something the Council sorely needs—an outside perspective.”

Margaret’s eyes narrowed thoughtfully, her fingers tapping a slow rhythm on the glass desk. “An outside perspective,” she repeated, tasting the words. “You believe that gives you an advantage?”

“I know it. The Council has been operating the same way for generations. Tradition is important, but tradition without adaptation is stagnation. I’ve seen how the world outside these walls thinks, how it operates, what it values. That knowledge could be invaluable to a Council that wants to ensure the clan’s survival for another three hundred years.”

Margaret nodded slowly, her gaze drifting to Heather. Heather’s smile had grown, her eyes gleaming with pride. She didn’t speak, but her silence spoke volumes.

Steve continued. He leaned forward, his eyes locking onto hers with a newfound intensity. “Second,” his voice steady and deliberate, “I intend to travel a lot for the next few years and speak with representatives of the clan all throughout the world. I’ll build my platform based on what I learn. I do believe the clan needs some new blood, some new ideas.”

He paused, a frown creasing his brow as his thoughts drifted to the interventionist faction. “Just ... not as destructive as those from the interventionist,” he added, his tone hardening.
