The morning light crept through the kitchen windows, pale and golden, casting long shadows across the tile floor. Steve shuffled down the stairs, his hair still slightly damp from the shower, a towel slung over his shoulder. He wore only a pair of loose short, meant to show his large asset. The house was quiet, except for the kitchen.

The smell of coffee and sizzling bacon pulled him toward the kitchen. His stomach grumbled in response, a low, insistent growl that reminded him he hadn’t eaten properly in what felt like days. He rounded the corner, his eyes half-lidded, still swimming in the fog of sleep.

Heather stood at the stove, her back to him, a spatula in hand as she flipped a batch of pancakes. The curve of her hips was visible beneath the thin silk robe she wore, the fabric clinging to her form as she moved. Susan was at the counter, her back also turned, her red hair tied in a loose bun, a few stray strands escaping to frame her neck.

He crossed the kitchen in a few lazy strides, his bare feet padding softly against the cool tile. He stopped behind Susan, his arms sliding around her waist, his chest pressing against her back. His hand slipped beneath the hem of her t-shirt, finding the warm, heavy swell of her breast. His fingers curled around the soft flesh, kneading gently, his thumb brushing across her nipple in a slow, deliberate arc.

“Hello Beautiful,” he murmured against her neck, his lips grazing her skin. “How is the mother of my child doing this morning?”

Susan tensed.

Her body went rigid beneath his touch, her shoulders squaring, her breath catching in her throat. She didn’t lean into him the way she usually did, didn’t melt against his chest with that soft, contented sigh. Instead, she stood frozen, her hands gripping the edge of the counter like she was bracing for impact.

Heather cleared her throat. Loudly.

Steve’s head snapped up, his gaze meeting Heather’s. She stood at the stove, spatula in hand, a knowing, amused smile playing at the corners of her lips. Her eyes flicked toward the table, a silent, pointed gesture.

Steve followed her gaze.

The woman sitting at the table had dark skin, rich as polished mahogany, and long dark hair that spilled over her shoulders in a glossy cascade. Her brown eyes glittered with barely concealed amusement as she hid a smirk behind the rim of her cup. She was younger than Susan, her features sharper.

Steve froze in place.

His hand was still inside Susan’s shirt, his fingers curled around the warm, heavy swell of her tit. The silence stretched, broken only by the sizzle of pancakes on the griddle.

“Heu ... Hi?” Steve managed, his voice cracking like a teenager caught sneaking out past curfew.

The woman at the table took a slow, deliberate sip of her coffee, her eyes never leaving his. Her smirk widened, just a fraction, and she set the mug down with a soft clink against the saucer.

“Hello, you must be the infamous Steve that Heather has been telling me about. You sure know how to make an entrance.” The woman said, still smirking at Steve.

Steve blushed so deeply it seemed to spread down his neck and across his chest, a crimson tide of pure, undiluted mortification. He slowly, almost mechanically, withdrew his hand from the warm haven of Susan’s t-shirt, his fingers tingling with the ghost of her skin. He started to extend that very hand toward the woman at the table, then froze, his eyes widening in horror. He snatched it back as if burned and thrust his right hand forward instead, an awkward, jerky motion.

“Hum ... shit! Well, I’m Steve Thompson,” he stammered, his voice a full octave higher than usual. “And I am so, so sorry to meet you this way.” His face was so red you could almost see steam rising from his ears.

Susan and Heather couldn’t hold it in any longer. A snort escaped Susan, quickly followed by a giggle from Heather, and within seconds they were both doubled over, clutching the counter for support, their laughter echoing off the kitchen tiles. The woman at the table took pity on him, her own shoulders shaking with restrained mirth as she accepted his clammy hand.

“Luisa Flores,” she managed, her voice wobbling. “And it’s certainly an introduction that I will remember.” She finally gave up the pretense, her head falling back as she joined the other two women in a full, unrestrained laugh that filled the room. Steve stood there, a monument to awkwardness, wishing the floor would just swallow him whole.

Heather managed to claw back a shred of composure, her hand fluttering to her chest as she gasped for air. “Luisa is our—” she started, her voice still wobbling with residual giggles. But then her eyes happened to glance at Steve’s face again, still a vibrant shade of crimson, and the sight sent her right back over the edge. She doubled over, her forehead nearly touching the counter as a fresh wave of laughter spilled out of her.

Steve rolled his eyes so hard it was a miracle they didn’t get stuck, but despite himself, a hint of a smile crept onto his lips. He could feel the heat in his cheeks beginning to subside, replaced by the slow, reluctant warmth of shared humor.

The sizzle from the stovetop grew sharper, a faint wisp of smoke curling up from the pan. Steve’s eyes flicked toward the stove. “Your bacon’s burning,” he said, trying his best to distract his mother.

Susan’s head snapped around. “Crap!” she yelped, her laughter dying in her throat as she lunged for the stove. She grabbed the handle of the pan and shoved it away from the heat, her other hand fanning at the thin trail of smoke. The bacon was dark around the edges, crispier than she’d intended, but not yet ruined.

She let out a breath, shaking her head, a rueful smile tugging at her lips. “Thanks, baby,” she muttered, tossing a glance over her shoulder at him. Her eyes sparkled with affection, even as she fought to suppress another giggle.

Heather finally straightened up, wiping a tear from the corner of her eye. She took a deep breath, steadying herself, and gestured toward the woman at the table. “Steve,” she said, her voice still a little hoarse, “this is Luisa Flores. She’s—” She paused, her lips twitching. “Our new head of security.”

Steve’s eyebrows shot up, his mortification momentarily eclipsed by genuine curiosity. “Security?” He repeated, the word hanging in the air, thick with implication. He looked at Luisa, really looked at her now. Beyond the amusement, her eyes held a sharpness, a quiet vigilance that had nothing to do with breakfast.

Luisa inclined her head, a small, acknowledging nod. “The O’Connors have many branches, Mr. Thompson. And many ... secrets.” Her gaze flickered to Susan, then to Heather. “Your grandmother thought it was time for someone with a more ... professional skillset on the premises. Especially after your encounter with the preacher.”

Steve’s smile faltered for a second, looking briefly toward his grandmother for a instant, the warmth still there but a suspicious glint appearing in his eyes.
