Chapter 24

Coming of Age Sex Story: Chapter 24 - This is the second book in the Wrinkle in Time Trilogy. It is a stand-alone book with an all-new cast that embraces getting a second chance, a do-over. Fortunately, this time, Xander had a cheat: life experience. I’d become the old man who no longer gave a fuck about others’ opinions. The problem was that by the time I learned this, I died … or so I thought. I found myself thrown back in time to do it all over again. Could I get it right this time?

Conference play started Friday night. It was also Homecoming, and somehow, Xander had been talked into helping with the class float, which was being built in Jake’s barn.

Pam had volunteered to be in charge of building the float. That meant the Princesses were asked to help, and, by extension, due to dating Kelly, Xander had been ‘volunteered’ to help with the heavy lifting. Pam was smart and asked Pippa to design their float. It turned out Pippa’s mom was an artist, which explained why Connie had some drawing skills.

Pippa and Pam had come out the weekend before to get started. West Fork’s mascot was a tiger, so Jake and his dad worked to create the frame to which chicken wire would be attached to form the tiger. When people arrived, they were given a quick demonstration of how to attach crepe paper to the wire.

Xander had been sold on this being a chance to spend time with Kelly. But she was a social butterfly and in charge of the music, and it looked like she was talking to everyone. Meanwhile, Xander was tasked with climbing a ladder to reach the top of the tiger’s head and fill it in.

They were almost done Wednesday night when Xander noticed that Kelly and Steve had slipped out of the barn and were gone for about thirty minutes. Xander took a break and climbed down the ladder to grab an iced tea.

He was headed toward the barn door to check on his girlfriend when Pam cut him off, which set off alarms in his head.

“Where are you going? We need you to finish up with the high stuff,” Pam said.

“I was going to catch some fresh air. I’ll be right back,” Xander said.

“No, wait!” Pam yelled, which caused several people to turn and see what was happening. “Uhm ... just go back to work.”

“Pam, give it up. I saw her take off with Steve. I just need to see it with my own eyes,” Xander said.

“Xander, I’m sorry,” Pam said, giving up trying to stop him.

Xander walked out of the barn, looked around, and didn’t see them. He heard soft mumbling that sounded like it was coming from behind one of the sheds. There was a row of bushes between the field and the yard, so Xander stepped behind them and quietly crept to where he could see.

He found Kelly with her back to the shed and Steve leaning in close.

“You smell delightful,” Steve said softly into her ear. “What are you wearing?”

“Killer Queen.”

Xander had bought a bottle of that for his sister for her birthday.

“It has a fruity scent,” Steve said.

Xander wasn’t happy when Steve leaned down and kissed Kelly’s neck. Xander pulled out his phone to record his new ex-girlfriend. Steve kissed her on the lips, and it escalated from a quick peck to a full-on make-out session.

They broke apart when Pam stepped out from between the sheds and cleared her throat.

“Xander’s looking for you,” Pam hissed.

Kelly looked panicked.

“Kelly, I told you I broke up with my girlfriend so we could be together. I thought you were going to break up with Xander, too,” Steve said.

“Yeah, I am; I just haven’t gotten around to it yet.”

“Shit. If I’d known ... anyway ... get it taken care of. I don’t need Xander Thornwood mad at me,” Steve said.

He left Pam and Kelly to argue. Xander jogged down the hedgerow and stepped out when he reached the barn. Steve’s eyes got big.

“Dude!” was all he got out before Xander drove his fist into Steve’s gut.

Watching him fold over and hit the ground felt good. Pam and Kelly ran over from the shed.

“I can explain,” Kelly said. “It wasn’t Steve’s fault.”

Xander pulled out his phone and sent the video to Barb with a note saying he was now single. A moment later, everyone’s phone blew up. Their social media queen had struck.

Kelly heard the notification pings, and her eyes got big.

“What did you do?”

“I told Barb I am now single. Knowing her, I imagine she has just shared that information with the world,” Xander said.

Pam looked at her phone and gave Kelly a sympathetic look.

“It’s bad,” Pam said as she showed her friend the video.

“Fuck!” Kelly screamed when she realized she’d been caught; there was no denying anything.

Xander grabbed his bike and rode home. They could finish the float without him.

The next day at lunch, Steve, Kelly, and Pam decided they should separate themselves from the group. Xander had decided he didn’t care whether they did sit with him and the rest of his group; he’d be civil. But that didn’t mean he was done with them.

After he finished eating, he stood up and made an announcement.

“I think Steve did me a favor. Kelly was too much work.”

He walked over to where Chantel was eating alone and sat across from her.

“Do you have a date for the dance?” Xander asked.

“I wasn’t planning on going, but Brad invited me to the after-party.”

“Would you do me the honor of being my date?”

“This isn’t a joke, is it?” Chantel asked.

“No, no joke. I find myself single and thought I’d ask you.”

“I heard Kelly messed up and couldn’t believe she would cheat on you with Steve Callahan. Did you really beat the shit out of him?” Chantel asked.

“I did punch him once. The rumors of the fight are a bit over the top.”

“Does this mean you’ll swing by after practice tonight like we used to do?” Chantel asked.

“I could use some stress relief,” Xander said with a shrug.

Chantel smiled.

“Does this mean we’re a couple?” Chantel asked.

“We’ll see. Let’s get through the dance and see how we feel afterward,” Xander said.

“I’ll take that and let everyone know I’m off the market.”

Xander saw Brad and a few of the older guys looking unhappy. Brad’s girlfriend and Xander’s neighbor, Julie, had a big smile. She mouthed, ‘I owe you.’

He made it a point not to look at Kelly’s table. Tommy told him later that his ex had run out of the lunchroom with tears running down her cheeks.

While that hadn’t been his intention, he was okay with the result.

Their opponent that Friday night was Charleston, which had won six state championships over the previous twenty years and was the best team West Fork had played so far. Charleston was known for its defense and had won all its games so far that season.

This was a classic offense-versus-defense battle, with most experts picking Charleston to handle West Fork easily.

It was also the game Arkansas planned to send coaches to, since they were recruiting a couple of Charleston players as well. Jeremy had shared that Charleston’s standouts would have recruiters from Kentucky, Vanderbilt, and Kansas State in the stands. He said it was a golden opportunity for Xander to show his stuff.

Between the recruiters watching and his being pissed about Steve and Kelly, Xander was ready to go. Football was a great way to work out his aggression by legally pounding someone.

At the beginning of the game, West Fork won the coin toss and chose to get the ball to start the second half. Xander trotted out onto the field as part of the kickoff team.

He anticipated the kicker’s runup and was running full speed when the ball boomed down the field. Charleston set up for a middle return as their blockers built a wall of defenders. They were known for big hits, so Xander wasn’t surprised when one of their players zeroed in on him and lowered his shoulder to lay some wood on Xander.

Charleston’s defender didn’t expect Xander wouldn’t try to avoid the block. Instead, Xander planned to run through the blocker to get to their return man. The two of them met head-on. When there’s a big hit, the crack of pads cuts through the crowd noise. When he got home, his mom told him it was the loudest hit she’d ever heard.

Xander blasted the kid, knocking him back into two other blockers. Xander powered through and stepped over the Charleston player’s limp body as he picked up speed to find the ball carrier.

The running back saw Xander zero in on him and tried to make a juke to fake out Xander. But Xander just focused on the runner and put his helmet on the ball as he made the tackle. The running back cried out in pain, and Xander saw the ball rolling on the ground.

Luckily for West Fork, Tommy jumped on the ball, recovering it on the twelve-yard line.

Xander jumped up and ran to the huddle. After Charleston’s trainers took care of their two players, the West Fork offense gathered around as Bobby took charge.

“Triple option right. On two.”

The play was coming Xander’s way, which meant he was the second option. He would run between the guard and tackle.

“Down! Set! Hut! ... Hut!” Bobby called out.

The ball was hiked to Bobby, who turned and put it into the fullback’s gut. Bobby went to his next read and pulled the ball back since the middle linebacker had filled the gap. Xander wasn’t sure why Bobby did it, but he handed the ball off to Xander. The defensive tackle was waiting for him.

Xander was in a rage and determined not to be tackled. He stiff-armed the Charleston defender, pushing him to the ground and giving Xander room to get past the line of scrimmage. Their outside linebacker rushed to clean things up, and Xander felt his thigh get hit by a shoulder pad as arms wrapped around his waist.

Xander shifted into Hulk mode. He dug in and dragged the linebacker with him down the field for another five yards before three Charleston defenders pulled him down.

It was now second and five at the seven-yard line. Charleston brought in their goal-line package of extra linemen and linebackers. Since West Fork rarely threw the ball, Charleston was selling out on stopping the run. Up to that point in the season, Charleston’s defense hadn’t given up any scores inside their twenty-yard line, much of that due to this defensive package.

Bobby didn’t have them huddle up because he wanted to get the ball snapped before Charleston could get entirely set. This time, the play was going left, meaning Xander was the last read.

On the snap, a wall of Charleston players made it impossible for anything inside to gain yardage. Their defensive end stepped across the line and was taking Bobby down for a loss when he tossed the ball to Xander. It caught Xander off guard because Coach Hammer had coached that if Bobby was hit, he should just take the loss. Bad things could happen if he tried to pitch the ball while being tackled.

That’s what happened in this case. The ball was pitched too high, and Xander was barely able to jump and pull it in. He had zero momentum when he secured the ball, and two Charleston defenders were bearing down on him.

Xander committed another no-no when he made a one-eighty and ran back to where he’d started. By now, the play was truly broken, and it looked like Xander might lose five to ten yards. That was when he mentally said, ‘fuck it,’ planted his outside foot, and powered his way into the teeth of the Charleston defense.
