“C’mon inside, Charley. Welcome back. Can I get you anything?”
“No thanks, Julie. I’m ready to get to work.”
“Sure. I just want to say I’m sorry for your loss.”
“I appreciate it. You’re one of the few people who saw the beginning of my mother’s spiral. We found out she had a brain tumor; it attacked her judgment and self-control; eventually the tumor caused her breathing to fail.”
“I understand. It was obvious she wasn’t in control of herself. I can see that you want to get started, so let’s begin with the math.”
We completed our usual 90-minute session. Afterwards, Julie asked me to stay a few extra minutes.
“We’re at the end of the spring semester, and you’ve prepared me for the final exams. I’m feeling confident, thanks to you.”
“I’ve been coaching; it’s you running the plays, Julie.”
“Some time ago, you said we couldn’t go out together because our teacher-student relationship made that unethical. Remember?”
“Yes.” Where was Julie going with this?
“Next week, tutoring will be over. Therefore, you could go out with me. Correct?”
“Um, I suppose.” Suddenly, I was all nervous, even sweaty.
“So ... Will you go on a date with me?”
“You’re Julie Pauzer, head cheerleader, homecoming queen, and leader of the cool clique in the cafeteria; I’m a nerd.”
“Be quiet! You’re MY nerd, and I want to go out with you. What is the problem?”
“Julie, the truth might be hard to believe, but I actually have a girlfriend.” And an aunt!
“I know that. Leila Rucker, with the big...”
“Personality. Yes, Leila. I appreciate your interest, but I don’t think Leila is going to like it if...”
“She says it’s OK.”
“She what?”
“I asked Leila if she would mind if you took me out, and she said, ‘Sure!’ That’s why I’m asking.”
OK, I wasn’t expecting to hear that. I put my face in my hands, stalling. Then I turned to face her.
“Is your sister about to jump out with her phone making a video of me?”
“No, it’s not a joke. Leila is expecting your call. I’ll wait for you.”
I shook my head and called my girlfriend’s number.
“Leila, honey, it’s your boyfriend.”
“Which one? No, I’m teasing. You’re with Julie?”
“Yeah, how did you ... She’s telling me something crazy.”
“Charley, Julie did ask me. I thought about it, and it’s a good idea.”
“I do NOT understand. Are we breaking up?”
“No, don’t be dumb. Charley, Julie is used to fending off desperate guys. She wants to relax and enjoy herself with a decent guy who will respect instead of grope her. You need to have some experience besides me, who just about fell into your lap. It’s either you go have fun with Julie, or we’ll make you date your sister.”
“You’re serious about this?”
“I am. Now stop being a dope and tell Julie you’d love to spend time with her. Bye!”
Julie was standing with her arms folded, tapping her foot impatiently. I think she could overhear Leila’s voice from my phone.
“Julie, ah, I, can I take you out? On a date? Please?”
“Hm. Try not to sound so uncertain. It’s not a dentist appointment, Charley. Yes, I would enjoy going out with you. Tomorrow night, pick out a restaurant and make a reservation for five o’clock. No shellfish, please.”
“I will, Julie. Thank you.”
“Don’t thank me yet. Let’s see how the date goes.”
At least she was smiling, despite my shaky start. Julie sent me on my way with a brief kiss, which left me trembling. I decided to walk down Cherry Lane to the Rucker house.
Laurence Rucker opened the door.
“I apologize for the late hour. May I speak with your daughter, please? I’ll be brief.”
He chuckled at my formality. “You may. Leila?”
“Hello, Mr. Gleason. May I help you?” She must have heard me speak to her father.
“A word on the porch, please.”
“All right.”
“What in the name of Kellogg’s Rice Krispies are you doing?”
“I told you. It’s a good experience. I don’t want you to take me for granted.”
“I would never...”
“Sh! You need experience. Julie needs experience; in her case, a low-pressure casual date with a guy she trusts. I want you to come back after a date with the hottest girl in our school saying that you still choose Leila Rucker as your #1.”
“But Leila, Julie kissed me.”
