As night fell, the stars emerged, a dazzling array of lights piercing the velvet sky. The moon cast a soft glow over the landscape, guiding them through the twisting paths of the forest. The air grew cooler, a gentle breeze whispering through the leaves as they approached the camp. The smell of cooking fires mingled with the scent of horses and leather, a welcome change from the stale odor of the town.

The Wematin camp was a hive of activity, despite the late hour. The glow of campfires danced across the faces of the tribe members, their shadows stretching long and thin. Ben’s heart raced as they approached, the letter from Sly feeling like a talisman in his pocket. He knew the importance of their mission, the future of Lawless Ridge hinging on the success of their negotiations.

They were met at the camp’s edge by a group of warriors, their faces stern and unreadable. Ben held up a hand in peace, his other hand clutching the letter. “We come in peace,” he called out, his voice firm but respectful. “We seek an audience with Chief Tangakwunu.”

One of the warriors stepped forward, a man with a scar that ran the length of his cheek, a testament to battles fought and won. He took the letter with a nod, his eyes flicking over the unfamiliar script. “Follow me,” he said, turning on his heel and leading them deeper into the camp. The air was thick with the scent of cooking meat and the murmur of voices grew louder as they approached the central fire, where the Chief’s lodge stood tall and proud.

The flickering light cast shadows across the ground, dancing and playing tricks on their eyes. They dismounted their horses, tying them to a nearby post. Ben’s hand remained on the butt of his pistol, not from fear but from instinct. The camp was bustling with life, children playing, women preparing food, and men tending to their weapons and horses. It was a stark contrast to the desolate town they had left behind.

They were led to a large teepee, the flaps parted to reveal a warm, inviting space. Inside, Chief Tangakwunu sat, his regal bearing unmistakable despite the simplicity of his surroundings. His eyes met Ben’s, and he gestured for them to enter. The warrior who had led them there passed the letter to the Chief, who broke the seal with a sense of purpose.

As Tangakwunu read, the camp grew quieter, the air thick with anticipation. His eyes scanned the parchment, and when he was done, he let out a deep sigh, his expression unreadable. He looked up at Ben, his gaze piercing. “You come with words from a trusted friend,” he said, his voice a low rumble. “You are welcome here.”

The tension in Ben’s shoulders eased slightly as the Chief spoke. He stepped forward, holding out the cigarillo. “For you, Chief,” he said, his voice steady. “From Sly.”

Tangakwunu took the offering, his eyes never leaving Ben’s. He sniffed it, then broke it in half, handing a piece back to Ben. “We share,” he said with a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. “It is a sign of friendship.”

The Chief lit the cigarillo, the flame from the campfire casting a warm glow on his face. He took a deep drag, then passed it to Ben, who did the same. The tobacco was strong, but Ben held his breath, not wanting to offend his host. They passed the cigarillo back and forth, the air between them thick with smoke and unspoken words.

“You speak of friendship and horses,” Tangakwunu said, his eyes never leaving Ben’s. “Our lands are rich with both. But the horses here are not just for riding, they are part of us. We hunt them not just to ride but to feed our people.”

Ben nodded solemnly, understanding the gravity of his request. “I know, Chief,” he began, his voice carrying the weight of his words. “But I come with a proposition that I believe will benefit us both. We need strong horses to rebuild our town, to give our people hope and freedom. In exchange for three of your finest Wematin horses, I offer you a cow.” He paused, letting the offer hang in the air. “This cow is not just for food. It’s a symbol of peace and partnership. We can breed them with your horses, making them stronger, faster.”

The Chief’s eyes widened slightly, and Ben knew he had piqued his interest. Tangakwunu took another puff of the cigarillo, considering the proposal. The Wematin had always struggled with cattle; their lands weren’t suited to the beasts. But the thought of a new breed, one that could survive the harsh conditions of the west, was tantalizing. “You offer a cow?” he said, his voice measured. “What makes you think our horses can breed with our horses?”

“They’re special,” Ben said, his voice filled with conviction. “Their bloodline is strong, resilient. With the right care, they could thrive here. And together, our people can learn from each other, share in the bounty of the land.”

Tangakwunu studied Ben, his gaze sharp and assessing. Finally, he nodded. “We will consider your offer,” he said. “Tomorrow, we will catch the horses. Two of my best warriors will accompany you to the Golden Ranch.”

The three nodded, their excitement palpable. They knew the significance of this alliance, not just for the future of Lawless Ridge, but for their own personal growth. They had come so far from their days as captives, and now they were shaping the destiny of the town they had grown to love.
