The next morning, the sun had barely crested the horizon when Ben and Goldie sat at the small table in the corner of ‘The Blossom’, counting out the night’s earnings. The coins clinked rhythmically, a metallic symphony of their growing power in the town. Goldie’s eyes flicked over the gold and silver, her thoughts racing. “This is enough for supplies and bribery,” she murmured, her voice a low purr of satisfaction.

Ben nodded, his eyes scanning the room with the same intensity he had used to disarm outlaws. “We’re getting closer, Goldie,” he said, his voice a rumble of determination. “We’re going to take this town back from the scum that’s been running it for too long.”

Just then, the door to the room burst open and in rushed Mattie and Catharine, their faces flushed with excitement. “Ben, Goldie,” Mattie panted, her chest heaving. “I want talk something, to you all...”

Ben looked up from the table, his eyes narrowing as he took in the women’s agitated state. “What’s going on?” he demanded, his voice sharp as a whip crack.

Mattie took a deep breath, her eyes darting to the door to ensure they hadn’t been overheard. “Mr. Phillip ‘Sly’ Barrera,” she began, her voice low and urgent. “He’s the new ranch owner in town. He’s been here, to The Blossom, the last night.”

Goldie’s eyes snapped up from the coins, her hand stilling mid-count. “What did he want?” she asked, her voice steady despite the racing of her heart.

Mattie’s cheeks flushed a deeper shade of red. “He said ... he said he wants to marry us,” she stuttered, her eyes looks happy. “Both of us.”

Ben’s expression surprise. “Marry you?” he repeated, his voice a low growl. “What did he say that for?”

Mattie swallowed hard, her eyes darting to the floor. “He said ... he said he could offer us protection,” she whispered. “That he’s looking for a wife, and he’s got plenty of gold to share.”

“Marry you?” Ben echoed, his voice a low growl of disbelief. He took a deep breath, his eyes never leaving Mattie’s. “You know what that means, don’t you?”

Mattie nodded, her eyes wide with a mix of fear and excitement. “It means safety,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “For all of us.”

Ben’s expression softened, his gaze shifting to Goldie, who was watching the exchange with a furrowed brow. “You know I wouldn’t ask this if it wasn’t necessary,” he said, his voice a gentle rumble. “But we need allies, and Sly’s got the power and the resources to help us take down the sheriff and his operation.”

Goldie nodded, her eyes still on the coins. “I know,” she murmured, her voice tight with tension. “But marriage ... it’s a heavy price to pay.”

Ben squeezed her hand, his gaze softening. “Mattie, Catharine, you both know the risks,” he said, his voice gentle but firm. “Sly might be a better option than some of the other men in this town. At least he’s offering you a chance at a life beyond ‘The Blossom’.”

Mattie nodded, her eyes shining with hope. “He said he’d treat us right,” she said, her voice trembling slightly. “He said he’d give us a home, a family.”

Catharine stepped forward, her own eyes filled with a mix of longing and skepticism. “But can we trust him?” she asked, her voice a whisper. “He’s still a man from this town, after all.”

Ben’s gaze softened, his thumb brushing over Goldie’s knuckles. “Marriage is an agreement with God, not with the people,” he began, his voice steady and calm. “It’s a sacred bond, and it’s the only one that truly matters.”

Goldie’s eyes searched his, finding the depth of his conviction, the unshakeable belief that their love could conquer all. “But if it’s for the greater good,” she murmured, her voice still tight with tension. “If it helps us save more lives...”

Ben nodded, his eyes never leaving hers. “We’ll make it work,” he promised, his voice a gruff reassurance. “We’ll make sure you’re safe, that all of you are.”

Catharine took a deep breath, her hand still shaking. “He said he wanted to speak with all of us,” she said, her eyes darting to the door. “He’s expecting us to ... to discuss the marriage.”

Goldie’s grip on the coins tightened, the metal biting into her palm. “We can’t just sell ourselves like cattle,” she murmured, her voice filled with quiet anger.

But Ben knew the reality of their situation. Lawless Ridge had no mercy for those who didn’t play the game. “We don’t have to see it that way,” he said, his voice a gentle rumble. “We can use it to our advantage. Get closer to the men who run this town, learn their secrets.”

Goldie’s eyes searched his, reading the determination etched in every line of his face. “I trust you,” she whispered, her voice barely a breath. “We’ll do whatever it takes.”

The sound of a carriage approaching the saloon cut through the tension like a knife. They all turned, their eyes wide with a mix of excitement and fear. It was a sound that didn’t often grace the dusty streets of Lawless Ridge, especially not at this early hour. The clatter of hooves and the jingle of harnesses grew louder until the carriage pulled to a stop outside.

Sly Barrera stepped out, his tall frame casting a long shadow across the saloon’s threshold. His eyes swept over the room, taking in the worn wooden floors and the faded red velvet curtains that hung from the walls. He was dressed in a crisp, clean suit, the stark contrast to the grime of the town making him seem almost out of place.

“Mr. Barrera,” Goldie greeted him with a coy smile, her heart racing. Ben had briefed her on the importance of this meeting, and she knew she had to play her part perfectly. She stepped forward, her hips swaying with a practiced grace, and offered her hand. “Welcome to ‘The Blossom’.”

Sly took her hand, his eyes raking over her body with a hunger that made her skin crawl. But she kept her smile in place, her grip firm. “I’ve come tonight to this place,” he said, his voice smooth as silk. “But I had no idea it was run by such ... charming company.”

Ben’s eyes narrowed, his hand resting lightly on the butt of his gun. “What can we do for you, Mr. Barrera?” he asked, his voice deceptively mild.

Sly Barrera’s gaze lingered on Goldie, his eyes filled with a hunger that went beyond mere desire. “I’ve been a busy man, Mr. Owen,” he said, his voice smooth as molasses. “Running my ranch, keeping the wolves at bay. But a man can’t do it all alone.” He stepped closer, his hand coming to rest on Goldie’s waist. “And I’ve decided it’s time I had a partner. Someone to share the burdens of this life with.”

Mattie and Catharine exchanged nervous glances, their hearts racing as they watched the scene unfold. Goldie knew she had to play this just right. “And what makes you think you’ll find that partner here?” she asked, her voice a soft purr that seemed to wrap around him like a warm embrace.
