It took a few days for Laura to get her bearings, find where everything was, and make the pronouncement, “I like it here. This is nice. Thank you, Charlie, and thank you, Sylvia, for bringing me here, for making me feel at home, and most of all, for loving me.”

That comment garnered a gigantic hug and a kiss from Sylvia.

I kissed her as well, and while they were still holding each other I told her, “Number one, sweetheart, you belong here. We just had to bring you. Number two, this is your home, so there is no other feeling we’d want you to have. Finally, number three, I do love you. Sylvia loves you. You are loved!” I spread my arms out then pulled them both in for a hug. “Speaking of love, does anyone want to have a picnic in the meadow down by the creek? I’ve been wanting to go down there and act like a hormone riddled teenager with a couple of understanding and likewise afflicted girls. Any takers?”

All smiles, they both nodded. “Tomorrow, young man. Laura and I will pack a picnic and we’ll go off into the wild green yonder. I’ll pack a couple of extra blankets. That grass is pretty thick down there.”

Laura broke out into a chorus of, “I want to check you for ticks!” Yes, that got the other two of us laughing and got us all wound up in a pile of horny, irresponsible, adults with no agenda besides happiness and frivolity. It wouldn’t last forever. We’d find purpose and definition for our lives someday, I was sure. Just not right then. Just getting to know each other, inside and out, was much more important for now.

The picnic was more than just lunch. It was another chance for us to share ourselves, our thoughts, our feelings, and our bodies with each other. After rinsing off in the creek and putting our clothes back on, Sylvia said she thought she saw something moving in the forest to the south of us, about halfway up the foothill that led to the mountain.

Keeping our eyes peeled, we all saw the movement. A young woman in a pink blouse and blue jeans was walking through the woods, apparently looking for something. As she came closer, Sylvia and I realized that it was Annalina. Sylvia whistled to get her attention.

Annalina looked over at the sound and waved. Naturally, we all waved back. About twenty minutes later, the young doctor was at our blanket, discussing her endeavor. She had been out all morning looking for antlers, and had only found a small half rack, a three point that she had staged to pick up on her way back.

Laura asked her if she’d like to join us for dinner, if she had time, to which she accepted readily. She asked what time to come over, but Laura talked her into coming home with us then we’d take her back over to her vehicle afterwards.

Between the salad and the main course, a chicken and rice oven baked marvel Sylvia loved to make, we got two phone calls. A major coincidence, considering we rarely got any at all.

Lana called to check in with Laura, the two of them exchanging pleasantries and Laura ending the call with a promise to call back after dinner. Lana was doing fine but was thinking about seeing some of the American Southwest and wondered about a possible vacation destination.

Then, during dinner Lori, one of the girls I met at the hotel in Hilton Head, called to explain that they had a serious problem on their hands, and I was the only one they could think of that could even get close to helping them out. She went on to tell us that Courtney needed a place to hide after ratting out a drug kingpin after he drugged her and tried to rape her. “Charlie, she was in pretty bad shape when I picked her up off the floor and got her out of the club. Believe it or not, the only one she wanted to talk to about it was you. I’ve had quite a time locating you but thank God you were only the third Charles Compton to answer the phone and not wonder who the hell I was and what the hell I was talking about.”

I put the phone on speaker, telling Lori that my two fiancées and the local doctor were on the phone with me and to explain carefully what happened and then I would explain to the women on my end who Courtney and Lori were.

Laura and Sylvia both looked at me and smiled when I introduced them. Annalina just grinned, knowing the Shaman had pronounced “companions”, in the plural.

“Okay, Lori, so what happened, exactly. No, not exactly. Just let us know enough that I’ll know if we can help, but I’m pretty sure we can.”

“We were up at Bosco’s, a wild nightclub up here, when this guy started talking us up. I guess Courtney was more his type, ‘cause he walked us back to his private area, had her sit on his lap, then gave her a sip of a drink he had on the table.” I groaned. “Yes, I know, stupid, stupid, stupid. Anyway, we heard and saw him selling drugs by the bags full, and even sold someone a girl. An actual little girl. Thirty thousand dollars he got for a fourteen-year-old Guatemalan girl he said he got from a coyote in Arizona. The little girl was so scared, she didn’t make a peep and had no idea in hell what was going on. In any case, after the deals were done, he started pawing all over her, Courtney, then pulled her skirt up and her blouse down and started forcing her down on the sofa. Courtney was fighting him off as best she could, but not doing very well at keeping him off of her. I screamed, the bouncers came and told us to get out before we got hurt, then at the door, one of them asked if we wanted to report it.

“He evidently was bucking the system, because the other people at the club didn’t give a damn about us. They were only making sure their customer was all right. In any case, the guy seeing us out called a cop over from down the block, told him what happened and turned us over to the police. The police were very, very interested in what we had to say.

“They were also pretty interested in the pictures and the video I had on my phone of the drug deals, the people involved, and the little girl being sold to the old man. Charlie, the old man is the deputy mayor up here. Anyway, it’s a mess, and we’d like to take this opportunity to beg for help.”

“Can you get away, Lori? I mean for a while.”
