One thing Charlie knew was that he didn’t want to give half of his newfound treasure to the government. Was he being bad? Yes. But Uncle Sugar would get a big chunk, regardless. Between sales tax on all he bought, property taxes, fuel taxes, and all that, he was sharing.
He worked out keeping enough of the money stateside to cover the property and the aircraft, basing his decisions on some purely amateur guesstimations, and went to a CPA who had his own lawyer on call just for these types of situations.
They confirmed that the inheritance tax would apply in this situation, but because it was from an overseas benefactor, the rules were different. His advisors put some paper together, sent the IRS a check for twelve and a half million dollars and Charlie never heard from them on the issue again. Now, he did have to be careful with capital gains and such, but that’s why we hire people. By the time all that was done, the three or so hundred million in international instruments and crypto had made another thirty million. Yes, twenty mil of the profit was from the smoke and mirrors currency, but money is money.
