One more trip back and forth to Hawaii, and on this particular trip, I met with Laura’s parents. Her mother was quite skeptical of me, of my resources, of my intentions, of my past, and of course of the fact that Laura had what her mother called ‘competition for my affections’. She was in no way shy about letting me know she was unhappy about Laura’s love life.
I asked Laura to meet me on their porch for a minute in private. “Are you swayed at all by what your mother is saying? I noticed your father is staying quiet about the whole thing.”
“No, I’m not. Charlie, I hate to ask this, and I know it’s not my place, but I think I know how you can get my mother to back off a bit. Need another house?”
“Like I need another hole in my head. Let me take the lead on this. Come on.”
We went back inside, and I took Mr. Daniels aside. “Lawrence...”
He interrupted me. “Larry. Larry will be fine, Charlie.”
“Cool. Larry, I hold no ill will toward anyone, and you need to know your daughter and I fell into a serendipitous relationship. She’s hopelessly in love with me because of what your mother told her may happen someday. It happened. She’s acting on it. As am I. Your little girl is a doll. A treasure. I intend to treat her like one. She will want for nothing as long as I have anything to say about it. If she wanted to keep your house, instead of putting it up for sale, what would you want to do?”
“We’re comfortable, Charlie, but we’re not rolling in dough, as they say. I can’t afford to keep both houses anymore, and don’t really want to. Travel, taxes, all that. No, I’d rather not.”
“How much do you have in it?”
“That’s kind of personal, don’t you think, Charlie?”
“Your daughter is a person, Larry.” I grinned. “What would the price be if she was to buy it?”
“Oh, shit. I never considered that. We gave three and a half for it, spent a little with some upgrades. Hell, Charlie, she doesn’t have four million. She’s only got a couple hundred large in her trust account from her grandmother.”
“I’ll give you four and a quarter for it right now. Well, in the morning. And then I’ll give it to her for a graduation present. On one condition, that is.”
“This is going to hurt, isn’t it?” Larry asked.
“You have Linda back off a little bit. Convince her that I’m not the bad guy here. I only want Laura happy, and she is.”
“Deal. Don’t worry about Linda. She gets worked up about shit then calms down after she thinks about it for a while. If Laura’s happy, she’ll be fine.”
We shook hands and I found out within minutes that Larry actually did wear the pants in the family, he just didn’t like confrontation.
“Just what was that all about? Lawrence, did you put him in his place and tell him he needs to leave our daughter alone and go find someone his own age?”
“Shit, Linda, you’re eight years younger than me. Let it go. He’s real. The house isn’t on the market anymore. He just bought it for a graduation present for his girlfriend.”
Laura squealed and jumped up and down.
“Girlfriend?” Linda’s snarky voice was venomous.
“MOM, STOP! Daddy, thank you. I’m going over to Charlie’s place for a bit.”
“He has a house here, too?” she asked, accusingly.
“Linda, it’s a VRBO rental. I had no use for real estate in Hawaii until I met Laura. I was fine in hotels and rentals. Until now. When are you all going back to the mainland?”
“Trying to get rid of us, cradle robber?” Linda just wouldn’t quit.
“LINDA, STOP.”
“MOM, STOP.”
Larry and Laura yelled at the exact same time.
“No, Linda, I was going to offer you a ride home, if your tickets were refundable. You’ll have to pour your own champagne, but other than that, it’s a nice plane.”
“You know, Charlie,” Larry said, “we only bought one way, since we’re doing the open-ended vacation thing until we get a call to come in and read. How long are you going to be here?”
