Sam sat at his desk, the morning sunlight streaming through the blinds as he typed furiously into his diary. He’d started logging the events of the past few days, detailing everything he’d seen—Emily with Jake, Madison with her husband, the sick parallels and differences between them. It felt clinical, detached, as if writing it down might somehow make it less real.

Observing isn’t the same as doing anything wrong, he told himself, trying to quiet the nagging voice in the back of his mind. I’m just ... documenting. Keeping track. For Emily’s sake.

Before he could sink deeper into his thoughts, his mom’s voice called from downstairs. “Sam! Come down here, sweetie. You have a visitor.”

Sam froze, his heart skipping a beat. A visitor? He quickly closed his diary and hurried downstairs, his mind racing. When he reached the living room, he stopped cold. Madison stood there, her arms crossed and a polite smile plastered on her face. His mom was grinning, clearly oblivious to the tension in the room.

“Madison here says she heard you’re a computer whiz,” his mom said proudly. “She needs help with her security system. Isn’t that nice?”

Sam forced a smile, his stomach churning. “Yeah, nice,” he said, his voice flat. He shot Madison a look, but she just tilted her head slightly, her smile widening.

“I’ve been having some trouble with the cameras,” Madison said, her tone sweet and innocent. “Your mom said you’re the best person to ask. I hope you don’t mind.”

Sam’s mom beamed. “Of course he doesn’t mind! Sam loves working on that kind of thing, don’t you, honey?”

“Uh, yeah,” Sam muttered, his mind racing. She’s cornering me. She knows something.

Madison turned to his mom. “Thank you so much. I’ll have him back in an hour or so, if that’s okay?”

“Of course!” his mom said, waving them off. “Take your time.”

Sam grabbed his jacket and followed Madison out the door, his hands shoved deep in his pockets. The moment they were out of earshot, her demeanor shifted. The polite smile vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating expression.

“You’ve been busy, haven’t you?” she said, her voice low and sharp.

Sam tensed, his pulse quickening. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Madison chuckled, a humorless sound. “Sure you don’t. Let’s just say I’ve been keeping an eye on things too. Interesting, isn’t it? How much you can see when people think they’re alone.”

Sam swallowed hard, trying to keep his voice steady. “What do you want?”

Madison stopped walking and turned to face him, her eyes narrowing. “I need your help with something. A ... technical issue. You’re good at figuring out how things work, right?”

Sam hesitated, his mind racing. “What kind of issue?”

She smirked. “Let’s just say it involves the security system.”

They walked in silence until they reached her house, the door clicking shut behind them like a trap snapping closed. Madison led him to her office, the room dim and intimate, with heavy curtains blocking out the morning sun. A sleek computer sat on the polished desk, its screen glowing softly. She gestured to the chair with a flick of her manicured hand. “Have a seat.”

Sam sat, his eyes flicking nervously to the screen. It was open to the camera feed from her bedroom—the same one he’d watched last night. His stomach twisted as Madison leaned against the desk, her arms crossed over her chest, her blouse dipping low enough to reveal the curve of her breasts.

“You’ve been watching us, haven’t you?” she said, her tone casual but her words sharp as knives.

Sam froze, his mind scrambling for a response. “I ... I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Madison sighed, shaking her head as if disappointed. “Don’t bother lying. I got an alert from the security company. They said someone was accessing the cameras at odd hours. Turns out...” She paused, leaning closer, her perfume enveloping him in a cloud of vanilla and musk. “It was you.”

Sam’s heart raced, his palms sweating. He hadn’t even thought about alerts—he’d been too focused on the feeds themselves.

“Don’t worry,” Madison said, her smirk widening. “I’m not mad. In fact, I’m impressed. You’ve got skills. And I’m willing to make this ... mutually beneficial.”

Sam stared at her, unsure whether to feel relieved or more terrified. “What do you mean?”

Madison pushed off the desk, pacing slowly in front of him, her hips swaying with each step. “You know, I was the first in the neighborhood to install this security system,” she said casually, her voice laced with false nostalgia. “Everyone else followed suit after I raved about it—recommended it at block parties, PTA meetings, you name it. Now, half the street has the exact same setup, all laughably vulnerable.” She paused, her eyes gleaming as she studied his reaction. “And you’ve been so ... preoccupied with my ‘performances’ that you haven’t even bothered to peek into the others, have you? All those predictable lives waiting to be uncovered.”

Sam swallowed hard, his mind flashing to the grid of unexplored signals he’d mapped but ignored, too fixated on the drama next door to branch out.

“I want the same level of access you have. Full control over the neighborhood’s security cameras.” She leaned in closer, her breath warm against his ear, her hand brushing his shoulder in a way that sent an unwelcome spark through him. “Give it to me, and you can see them too—every boring husband jacking off in his office, every desperate housewife touching herself in the shower. We’ll share the view, Sam. It’ll be our little secret ... and who knows? Maybe you’ll find something even more exciting than watching me.”

His brow furrowed. “Why?”

She stopped, turning to face him with a look that was both amused and calculating. “I’m bored. Everyone around here is so ... predictable. I want to see what they’re really up to when they think no one’s watching.”

Sam swallowed, his mind racing. “And if I say no?”

Madison’s smirk returned. “Let’s just say, people might find out about your little hobby. Your mom, for example—she wouldn’t be too happy, would she?”
