We had ridden in a circle moving outward from the camp starting about 100 yards out for the first circle. Moving out about another 30 yards for the second circle and then 50 yards beyond that for the third circle.

We were about halfway into the third circle when Nala saw several men stalking a small herd of small deer about the size of a goat or sheep. The only difference was their antlers were forked like deer.

Just as they threw small spears taking five of the deer. Two groups of two-legs charged, one went after the other deer and the second attacked the men.

I said to help the men as I charged forward. Everyone followed me, Balto drew an arrow and successfully hit one in the head killing it immediately. Russila was using a crossbow and also hit her target in the body knocking it down but did not kill it. The wound seemed bad enough that it did not get back up. Tila shot two times killing her target. Nala fired twice as well but only hit once which just created a huge wound along the side but did not kill her target nor did it knock it down. But did seem to slow it down which allowed one of the men to finish it off. I had swung my rifle up and shot three in the head killing two and leaving the third twitching and flaying on the ground before it finally stopped kicking.

The men had also done a good job of protecting themselves and each other by grouping into threes which prevented the two-legs from being able to attack them from a blindside. They had hatchets that were two or three wooden spikes set into a handle making a hatchet or war club. The wooden spikes were about 8” long and easily an inch in diameter. These proved to be strong enough to penetrate the two-legs hide deep enough to slow down or kill them if hit enough times. These had to have been developed over time and with experience.

They also had a stone knife or what appeared to be a spearhead on a shorter handle than what we had on our stabbing spears. These knives, which were closer to a machete, allowed the men to keep the two-legs from biting them, and in a few cases slashing the throats of two-legs killing or at least leaving them dying on the ground from the damage they produced.

The few two-legs that were not killed or crippled ran off when they realized they were not able to take down these men. I quickly looked to the other group of two-legs and saw they were still chasing the deer getting farther away.

With all the two-legs down, dying or already dead, the hunters finally noticed our group after finishing off the two-legs that were not dead. There were a few men with injuries but nothing life threatening. Mostly just minor clawing that were less than a ½” deep and only a few inches long.

There were three men who had bad claw wounds, the worst injury was a serious rip down one man’s thigh that was almost to the bone, about 8” long and bleeding bad the only good thing was it had not gotten any arteries or veins.

The other two had claw wounds to their back, the first had four that were about ¾” to 1” deep and went from the shoulder blade to his hip, and the second man’s injury went across his back just below the shoulder blades but was only about ½” to ¾” deep.

Balto called out to the hunters explaining we were friendly and not looking for a fight. An older looking man spoke for the group and accepted that we were friendly and asked about the things we used to throw small spears. Our bows and crossbows. When he realized women were armed and very good at using their weapon as he added that comment.

Russila said that even our young ones have a weapon to defend themselves and others as she held up a slingshot. I wondered why she had one and would ask about that later.

One of the other hunters asked what the slingshot was. Russila set her crossbow in her lap and took out a small rock from a tiny pouch on her belt and fired the slingshot into the head of a dead two-leg. The impact was powerful enough to almost pop the eye out of the skull.

The hunter who introduced himself as Rahemel asked to try the slingshot. Coomel the spokesman introduced himself and asked where we had come from. Russila dismounted setting her crossbow on the saddle and began to explain the slingshot to Rahemel. It took him three shots before he hit the two-leg’s head but when he did it actually penetrated the skull to everyone’s shock.

Balto, Tila, and I were still on our horses as I introduced everyone in our group then gestured for Coomel to introduce all the other hunters.

Coomel introduced Antmel, Banmel, Pilatomel, and Tanomel, Nala had been treating Banmel, Pilatomel, and Tanomel the injured hunters. Nala said that she had controlled the bleeding but that we needed to get them back to our camp to finish treating them.

Coomel asked about the crossbow pointing to Russila’s saddle. I nodded to her, so she picked it up and began to explain to him how it worked. Rahemel was watching closely as well. They each successfully shot a two-leg in the body which was about 20 feet away on their first shot.
