It had been two months since the Rocs had been killed, and we had not had any other trouble. This was beginning to worry all of us. I had found the nest and sadly there was no sign of Sihemol or her armor. Mostly there were bones, and very few of those.

A different type of danger we experienced was when a pride of lions attacked our hunting party as they were dealing with several kills. The two assigned to guard duty saw the lions well before they attacked. All of the nine lions were killed with two or three arrows each: using broad tips, not the exploding tips. Everyone understood the danger in using the exploding tips. When we were told about this incident I decided to give every hunter and protector an extra exploding tipped arrow or bolt to keep with them at all times just in case an emergency required it.

I did not get a question from Grace over this decision at the now routine meeting we had every morning before I had breakfast. If there was nothing to report from either of us all that we said was hello and goodbye. Grace did mention that my decisions have been readily accepted by the higher ups. This made me feel better about my decisions.

Three mornings later however, Grace did have something important to tell me. They had found another group of people or what was left of a clan. Evidently an earthquake had destroyed their clan killing off almost all the men most of the older women and of course kids too. There were two males ages, 17 and 16, five females, 16, 15, 11, 9, and 8, along with fifteen kids 5 years and younger making a total of 22 survivors.

Grace explained; they had been moving the group slowly at night farther than they had traveled during the days, without making it obvious they were doing it. This was done to move them closer to my group. They were still about ten days away at the speed they were walking. They had been given the urge to keep moving away from the dangerous earthquake area without it becoming a command.

After telling me this, Grace just sat looking at me.

I got an ornery notion and decided to sit and stare back at her. After about 4 minutes Grace crossed her arms and said, “It will only take you two days with the wagons to reach them.” When I still refused to talk to her she said, “Thank you” and the screen went back to the map, showing a flashing blue dot to the east.

I slapped the desktop, laughed, then went to get breakfast. While eating I passed the word that the council needed to meet.

While the clean up was being done and after the hunting and gathering groups had been assigned, the council all sat down around me. Kimla had gotten into trouble so she was assigned to the cleanup and would not be going out with her group today as punishment. She brought the coffee pot and gave everyone a refill if they wanted one.

Reamla was the first to ask why I had called for the council meeting. I took a drink of coffee before beginning to explain that I had a vision from the Spirits.

I gave a short version of the earthquake destroying a clan and told them that the only survivors were younglings. I mentioned that they were being led by two boys and two girls in their mid- to late teens. I added that there were 18 other kids younger than these, bringing the total number to twenty-two.

I was happy and shocked when every single one of the council stood, and asked why we were not already preparing to go find them.

I said that two carriages would be enough to carry them and we could take one wagon with supplies along with four protectors add to my two protectors. I then told Reamla to decide which head-woman she would send. I cringed when she gave me ‘the look’ while crossing her arms. I tried to save myself by telling her to put the list of who would be going together and let me know as soon as they were ready to leave.

I found out why Reamla had given me the look when I saw Tila and Fallata bringing Blackie to me. I had forgotten Nala was pregnant and almost ready to give birth. Reamla and Eaomol were going to be the head-women for this mission. Wooshoo, Boomala, Cealma, Banmel, and Pilatomel were the protectors. Sulama and Wesamol would drive the carriages with Honamel, and Junamel as guards. Bowanta and Tanomel would drive and guard the wagon.

We left right after lunch and Grace told me that after their group went to sleep they would be moved a short distance from where we would set our camp for the night. That way the next morning we could find them and bring them back to our cave before sunset or just after. She said they were not doing very well.

Considering what Grace had said, I decided to move at a slightly slower rate to decrease the distance we would have to travel back to the cave tomorrow after meeting up with the younglings. We woke the next morning. While some of us started breakfast began to break down camp.

Our breakfast fire and smoke attracted the younglings. Without any caution or care twenty-two hungry, tired, and worn out young people walked up to our camp.

Singu the 17 year old leader of this group introduced himself and then all the others after we got them sitting around our fire with oatmeal to eat. He introduced the males first starting with 16 year old Taolu, Chonu 8, Foutu 5, Jambu 4, Naru 4, Woolu 3, Yantu 3, and Albu 3. Then he introduced the girls starting with Miati 16, Rauli 15, Dowali 11, Borti 9, Girti 5, Hirsi 5, Lambi 4, Perli 4, Varli 4, Zebi 3, Kiati 3, Omai 2, and Elli 2.

Once everyone had finished eating we loaded up everyone and rode for the cave. Reamla and Eaomol each rode in one of the carriages so they could begin explaining our clan rules.

It was an hour past sunset when we reached the cave and all our clan was waiting to welcome the newcomers. They had prepared a huge feast to celebrate and welcome them. While the meal was being eaten Singu, Taolu, Miati, and Rauli talked with the council. I suggested the younger kids be taken in by families to provide a father and mother figure for them. All four of the teens smiled at this.

Everyone on the council agreed this was a good idea and the kids 5 years and under were each paired with a family. I took the two older children, Borti and Chonu since my family had several women that could be called mother.

Wooshoo and Russila took Elli; Zeanto and Pramla took Omai; Yamato and Sulama took both Kiati and Albu; Figamel and Gunimol took Zebi; Echoto and Trulama took Yantu; Mufalo and Looma took Woolu; Drooto and Boomala took Jambu; Fetmo and Cealma took both Naru and Perli; Lahoomel and Eaomol took both Foutu and Varli; Rahemel and Netemol took Lambi; and Coomel and Maamol took Girti and Hirsi who were the only twins in this group.

The next morning at breakfast Singu asked about the bows and crossbows he had noticed just about everyone carrying. I smiled and said there would be lessons today for all of the newcomers and special items would be given to some of them at that time, explanations would also be given along with training on how to use the new items safely and correctly.

He was satisfied with this answer and I saw him move to the others from his group to tell them what I had said. I was very impressed with the leadership he was demonstrating.

Zeanto came up to me and said he had heard Singu and also observed his actions and was just as pleased as I was. He asked if we should add him to the council to represent the newcomers.

I said that I was thinking about creating a sub-council with maybe four or five males and females around 20 years old, to get ideas from the younger peoples’ perspective. Zeanto did not understand perspective but agreed that what I was suggesting made sense.

We had all the new members go to the barn cave to learn how to use the slingshot. We had two people help with each youngster. They were quickly getting the hang of shooting and soon were safely proficient with the weapon to hit a 10 cm circle eight out of ten shots at eight meters.

Those old enough or rather big enough were allowed to try a bow or crossbow. Singu, Taolu, Miati, and Rauli were strong enough to use the regular bow. Borti and Chonu were happy with the crossbow. They all were able to hit targets out to 65 meters seven out of ten shots. That was not bad for their first day of practice, and they would only get better over time.
