The alarm going off first thing in the morning was never a good way to start the day. Waking up with the soft light of morning filtering through the curtains—that was better. Even better than that? Cuddling with someone you loved.

Frank Devon woke up exactly like that. His hand rested gently around a familiar breast, Veronica’s warm body pressed against him as they lay entwined. In front of them, his other wives—Lisa and Jane—were snuggled together, soft breaths rising and falling in rhythm, forming the peaceful cocoon that was their shared bed.

Veronica, the woman in his arms, had joined their pack years ago. Though she started as just a family roommate—Lisa’s close friend—she couldn’t remain on the sidelines. The longing had become too much to be part of a family. She had asked, no—begged—to officially join the marriage, to become a wife, not just a member of the household. And Frank, Lisa, and Jane had welcomed her with open arms. Since then, she’d shared their bed, their life, their love.

The pack had once included more—Tiana and Brianna, who lived with them during the early years—but both had eventually found mates of their own and moved on, their paths diverging peacefully.

Now, the family includes three children. Lisa had given birth to two, and Jane to one, over the past eleven years of marriage. Sofia, Lisa’s first, was born ten years ago. Three months later, Jane gave birth to Ezra. They were raised like twins—inseparable in every way. Then, three years later, the WE granted them another child, Isabella is her name. Lisa had carried her, and their hearts had grown even fuller.

The family was happy. Whole. And growing in the best of ways.

Frank used the bathroom, pulled on a soft cotton robe, and walked to the kitchen to start the coffee. He stood at the kitchen sink, gazing out the window at the bushes and the fence separating his yard from the neighbor’s.

“I need to trim those bushes,” he muttered, smiling to himself.

As the coffee pot burbled to life, Frank let his thoughts drift, a happy and contented sigh escaping as he reflected on his life.

He was the owner of Velvet Entertainment, which operated upscale strip clubs in three cities. In Metro City, his former hometown, he launched the original Club Velvet before the WE emerged. These micro-robotic entities now live in every person on Earth, granting perfect health, biological immortality,, and seamless global communication—at the small price of living by ten rules. What had once felt restrictive now seemed natural. The WE made it possible for Frank to run his business and his life with more clarity and connection than ever before. His other clubs were in Chicago as well as East St Louis.

Arms slipped around him from behind, and Jane—one of his first wives—pressed her body to his back, resting her cheek between his shoulder blades.

“What are you thinking about?” she asked.

“Nothing, really. Just ... how lucky I am.”

“Yeah,” she said softly. “Me too.”

Frank turned and scooped her up, placing her gently on the counter so he could kiss her good morning.

“So, my wife,” he said, grinning, “who’s getting the kids up today?”

She laughed and kissed him. “RoShamBo. Winner gets the honor.”

Frank nodded. “One, two, three—shoot!”

Rock met rock. A tie.

“One, two, three—shoot!”

Frank’s scissors beat her paper.

He laughed and backed away, already heading for the stairs. “Victory!”

“Cheater!” Jane called after him with a grin. She didn’t mean it. She didn’t care who got the kids—only that they were all together.

She turned to breakfast prep, pulling out eggs, pancake mix, and bacon. The eggs went into one bowl, the pancake batter into another, and the bacon was laid out on parchment paper atop a baking sheet—ever since discovering oven-baked bacon, they never went back to the pan.

Frank opened the kids’ bedroom door quietly. All three children slept in one big bed, limbs tangled together. Ezra in the middle, flanked by Sofia and Isabella. They’d grown up seeing their parents share a bed and adopted the same sleeping style. When they were older, that might change—but for now, there was no rush.

“Hey, kids. Time to get up,” Frank said softly, crawling onto the bed to kiss each one on the cheek and give gentle shakes. “Breakfast is almost ready, come on.”

“Dad, it’s too early,” Isabella groaned.

“Come on, baby girl,” Frank coaxed, giving her another kiss.

Ezra pulled Sofia into a sleepy hug, and before long, all three were blinking and stretching their way out of bed. Frank returned downstairs just as the shower started upstairs.

It was Thursday, May 8, in Chicago. The kids had school, and Frank and Lisa had work. Lisa managed the Chicago club now, while the two clubs in Metro City and East St. Louis were in the hands of trusted managers. Frank oversaw the business from his main office in Chicago, where he tracked revenue and made sure everything stayed on course.

Years ago, when he was building the Chicago club, he’d taken on a partner: Grant Lockwood. Grant’s investment helped launch the club, and they’d been successful partners ever since. He’d even met his wife through Frank’s circle—one of Lisa’s former street sisters who had built a beautiful life with Grant. They were still inseparable.

Frank poured pancake batter into a hot pan while Jane scrambled eggs. When the kids came down for breakfast, they found golden pancakes stacked high, a mound of fluffy eggs, and crispy oven-baked bacon waiting.
