“We can meet anytime, Mr. Cochran. We played at Ruthie’s yesterday and she wants us to play for her each day, until we become known.”
“I know Ruthie personally. Is there any way you can meet me at her place today?”
“We’re supposed to meet her there before she opens this morning. She said come early, but we wanted to call you before we go.”
“Are you and Bobbie at your apartment house now?”
“Yes Sir.”
“I’ll be there in twenty minutes to get you. Do you have instruments or do I need to bring them? I heard a guitar and fiddle backup, when you were playing on the radio.”
“That was a brother and sister we met earlier, playing their instruments. Bobbie and I did buy a guitar and a fiddle yesterday at a pawnshop on our way home.”
“Be ready when I get there, Beau. You and Bobbie McGee are going places, and I’m going to see to it, each of you - go all the way to the top of the charts.”
“Yes Sir, Mr. Cochran. We’ll be sittin’ out on the front porch when you get here.”
I was looking at Millie and Bobbie when I said goodbye, and they were both laughing and clapping their hands.
When I stood up to go get our guitar and fiddle, both of them grabbed me in a hug at the same time. and we danced around Millie’s living room floor as they laughed.
I have tears in my eyes, I’m so happy.
“What all did he say, Beau?” Bobbie asked as we came back down the stairs, and through Millie’s kitchen, this time, with our instruments.
“He said to be ready when he gets here, that you and I are going places. He knows Ruthie and he wants us to go there with him now, to meet and talk about him being our agent!”
“Beau, do you really think we’re about to be discovered? I mean, with a chance to make it big? I feel scared, and so happy at the same time. I think I need to run back up and pee before he gets here.”
“You run pee, Bobbie. I’ll be waiting on the porch with Millie.”
Millie and I are sitting in the porch swing when a long black Cadillac Limousine pulled over to the curb at the end of her sidewalk. I watched as the driver got out and walked around to open the back door on this side.
Bobbie came out on the porch just as a tall, gray-haired man stepped out, and stood looking our way. He’s wearing a white cowboy hat and some of the shiniest, red cowboy boots I’ve ever seen. He’s wearing a gray suit trimmed with little white and red ropes, and arrowheads.
Bobbie reached out, and I grabbed hand, pulling her with me as we walked down the steps to the sidewalk. We met the tall man halfway, and he’s smiling already.
“I would know you two, no matter where we meet. I’m C W Cochran and I’m pleased to meet both of you.”
“I’m Bobbie Sue McGee, and I’m pleased to meet you, Mr. Cochran.”
Bobbie shocked me as she stepped right out in front, grabbed the man’s hand, shaking with him. He’s grinning at her and she’s grinning at him.
“I’m Beau William Carter, and I’m pleased to meet you too, Mr. Cochran. Thanks for coming all the way over here to get us’”
“Both of you, call me C W...
“We’re going to be best friends and we’re going to make lots of records and lots of money too. Get in this vehicle and lets go see Ruthie.
He turned toward the porch and spoke, “Ms. Millie, we’d love for you to ride with us, if you will.”
“No, you go ahead. I’ll come down when they play there next time. Y’all have business to discuss and I’m sure you and Ruthie will treat them right.”
“See you Millie,” Bobbie waved just before she bent to step into the limousine. She sat in the seat facing backwards and I sat beside her, as Mr. C W sat in the seat facing forward, looking at us and grinning the whole time.
“This sure is a fine car, Mr. C W, I’ve always dreamed of riding in one of these,” Bobbie said, looking it over.
“You’ll be riding in your own limousine very soon, Bobbie. You and Beau are that good.”
“I sure hope you’re right. Ruthie told us we’ll have to travel some and play in the casino’s and clubs, if we ever get an agent.”
“That’s the way we’ll get you out in front of the public to begin with. We’ll have to book you with some well known headliners and you’ll get even more exposure in front of the public while traveling all over the country.”
“We’re ready too, Mr. C W, whatever it takes...
“Ain’t that right Bobbie?”
“Sure is. We never thought we’d be doing this in just our first week here, after we hitched a ride from Kentucky in a big eighteen-wheeler,” Bobbie told him.
“That story will make it even better for you, when your fans get to know you. People love reading about artists who hitchhiked from out of nowhere, to make it big. It gives them hope, and makes them proud to know someone just like them, who made it to the top...
“You’re both going to be big-time too. I’ve already called Ruthie and she’s ready for us. I have a standard contract for each of you and we’ll add and take away anything you want, or don’t want. When we get it all hammered out to where we can agree on it, we’ll set up a big ceremony at Ruthie’s and we’ll all sign it.
“I told Ruthie that when we have your recording contracts ready to be signed, we’ll come back to her place and have another big ceremony, signing those too.”
Mr. C W is smiling like we are, but he sure is a lot calmer than I am.
When we got to Ruthie’s, they weren’t open yet. Mr. C W pushed the door open anyway and held it for Bobbie and me to go in first. I saw the girl who had waited on us yesterday and she’s smiling as we come in.
“We’re supposed to meet with Ruthie, is she here yet?” Bobbie said. Her voice is shaky, and I can tell she’s nervous.
“Yes, come on back. She told me you’d be here early. She’s waiting for you in her office.”
We followed her past the long bar, then around to the other side where she went down a hallway to the back. I was nervous as heck, and I could tell Bobbie is nervous as she walks ahead of me, looking over her shoulder every two or three steps, to make sure I’m right behind her.
I knew Mr. C W is right behind me, I could hear his cowboy boots on the hardwood floor as we follow the waitress to Ruthie’s office.
Ruthie is sitting behind a huge, fancy, frilly decorated desk. She’s smiling, just as she always is, and she’s wearing another long pink dress, that looks more like a nightgown to me.
“Come on in here, all of you.
“Bobbie you and Beau come over and meet my business partner, Ed Walters.
“Ed, these are the two young people I’ve been telling you about.
“Meet Beau Billy Carter and Bobbie Sue McGee. Remember this meeting, and remember their names, cause these two are destined to go all the way.
...”C W, you old hound-dog you, how’ve you been? You know Ed, don’t you? Come here and give me a big ol’ hug and let’s all sit down and talk about the future of these two young’uns.”
Ruthie is talking loud and making all of us feel welcome, as she and Mr. Walters pulled some extra chairs closer to her desk for us.
After all the welcomes and greetings were over, Ruthie turned around and switched on some kind of radio behind her. I jumped and so did Bobbie, when a huge movie screen came on with Bobbie and me standing on Ruthie’s stage.
That’s us yesterday, and boy do I ever look like a raggedy-ass, long-haired, country-hick, up there playing my harmonica.
I sound good though, as I play Dixie. Then Bobbie came up and she sang Me and Bobbie McGee, with me playing my harmonica. I could hear all the yells and clapping from the crowd and it made me feel good, all over again.
When Ruthie turned the show off, she looked around at Mr. C W and her partner, Ed Walters.
They were both grinning and nodding at each other. I looked at Bobbie and we kinda smiled at each other. We could tell they like what they see, as much as us.
For the life of me, I still cannot remember all we talked about, and all they talked about in there, but with Mr. C W, Ruthie and Mr. Ed Walters all talking, and making changes, making plans, and grinning at us as they did, they soon stood and shook hands.
“Beau, you and Bobbie Sue have yourselves a fine agent, who just happens to be a well respected gentleman in the business, and a member of The Grand Ol’ Opry. You two will have to work hard and do as C W tells you. But if you’ll listen to him, you’ll both be headliners in a less than year. Don’t you agree C W?” Ruthie said as we looked at him.
“Yes, and thanks, Ruthie.
“Thank you too Ed, for calling me. I called the radio station as soon as I got your call, and had a recording of the entire sidewalk broadcast sent to my office. As soon as I heard them perform, I drove over to Sylamore Street to try and meet them.”
Mr. C W was talking to them, then he turned to us.
“Bobbie Sue, I’ll come by at 7:30 tomorrow morning to get you. We’re going to meet Charles Belancamp at his studio and cut some demos. By this time next week, we’ll have your name and your voice out to all the record labels and radio stations in the south...
“Beau Billy Carter, you be ready too. I want you backing Bobbie on all her demos, then I want you to cut your own, solo demos while we’re there. You’ll be playing at Charles’ recording studio full time, even before this very week is over.
“I’ve talked to Charles about your finances, and he told me that he advanced both of you some money. Do you have enough to get by, for a few more days until we can make arrangements to get each of you in a townhouse apartment?”
Mr. C W looked at Bobbie, then me as he talked, smiling big, making plans already.
“We’ve only spent a few dollars out of what he gave both of us, just enough to eat and pay rent. We did buy a used fiddle for Bobbie and a used guitar for me. We didn’t pay but five dollars apiece for them though. We’ll have enough to get by for a while longer. Ruthie told us we could come here to sing and play, and she’ll pay us,” I told him.
“Mr. C W, is there any way we can stay with Millie, for now anyway? I mean, she’s been good to us and we’re not making any money yet. We don’t want to use up what we have,” Bobbie said as she looks up at him.
She looks so little, standing next to Mr. C W, almost like a skinny little kid, with her long straight hair down past her butt in back.
“Just stay where you are for the next day or two, at least. We’ll make sure your rent is paid and you have living expenses. Both of you need to start thinking about new clothes to perform in, once we get all this worked out.
“Ruthie, we’ll be through at Charles’ studio early tomorrow evening, if you want to go ahead and put a plug on the radio about the new act you’re lining up,” Mr. C W said.
“I’ll call and have that ad started on the radio this morning. I also want to have a live spot on TV too, with both of them singing and playing.”
“I’ll leave that part up to you, and I’ll keep in touch with you about our schedules. I want them to have as much local exposure as we can get. I’ll have them some local club dates lined up in a week or so, and we may even be able to get one, or both of them on the casino circuit as a stand-in or even as an opening act for our headliners already scheduled.”
C W was telling Ruthie all this, which meant nothing to Bobbie and me. But we knew it has to be good because they’re both smiling, as they talk and plan.
Mr. C W left, after telling us again what time he’ll be by to pick us up early in the morning. Ruthie and Ed Walters shooed us out front where the recorded music is playing loud, and people were already coming in for dinner. I looked at the big clock over the bar and it’s almost twelve noon. I had no idea we’ve been back there that long.
Bobbie and I both had to go pee, and when we got back, Ruthie was up on the stage, telling everyone all about us. There must have been a lot of them here, that were here yesterday, because there was a lot of yelling and clapping when she told them our names.
