James walked out of the cottage and stopped dead.

Sitting in the middle of the farmyard, looking perfectly content with themselves, were all forty-odd slimes.

They formed a broad, uneven semicircle beyond the porch, their translucent blue bodies glistening beneath the afternoon sun. Some gently rocked from side to side. Others appeared to be dozing, flattened against the warm ground like puddles of blue jelly. A few bounced quietly between places, but most simply sat there, staring at James with wide, expectant eyes.

James stared back.

He had sent five slimes out that morning.

Five.

Their mission had been critical: find gold, make certain it was not owned by anyone, and bring it back to the farm.

He had left the remaining slimes working around the homestead.

Now every last one of them was sitting in the yard.

“What the fuck?”

The cottage door creaked open behind him.

“What is it?” his father asked.

Harlan stepped onto the porch, glanced past James and stopped dead. Marta walked into his back, muttered something irritated, then leaned around him and fell silent. Lilly squeezed between them, followed by the rest of the family.

They all stared at the assembled creatures.

“Why are they all here?” Marta asked.

“I don’t know.”

“You don’t know?”

“I only sent five.”

Harlan slowly looked at him. “Sent five where?”

“To search for gold.”

His father’s eyebrows rose.

James pointed at the mass of slimes.

“The rest were supposed to stay here.”

That was when the truth struck him.

The original five had gone out searching. At some point, they must have discovered more than they could carry. Instead of returning to James for new instructions, they had come back to the farm while he was inside the cottage, gathered the other thirty-five or so slimes and led them away again.

Then they had all returned together.

James had not seen any of it happen.

He had not given the order.

He had not even known they were gone.

The thought sent a cold thrill down his spine.

The five slimes had encountered a problem, considered their options, returned for assistance and communicated the mission to the others. The rest had understood, agreed to help and followed them.

That was not simple obedience.

That was initiative.

That was independent thought.

James slowly stepped down from the porch.

“You lot left the farm?”

The forty-odd slimes bobbed together.

His father took a cautious step forwards. “Did you tell them to?”

“No.”

“But they all went?”

“Apparently.”

Harlan frowned at the creatures. “Then how did the others know what they were supposed to do?”

James looked over the waiting slimes.

“I think the five came back and gathered them.”

“Gathered them?”

“They must have found too much for five of them to carry. They came back while we were inside, got the others and then went out again.”

Harlan’s frown deepened.

“You didn’t tell them to do that?”

“No.”

Marta folded her arms, looking between James and the assembled creatures. “Perhaps they simply understood what you wanted.”

“That’s the problem,” James said. “I told five of them to look for gold. I didn’t tell them to come back for help, and I certainly didn’t tell the others to leave.”

Harlan scratched at his beard.

“They listen to you well enough.”

James nodded slowly, though his attention remained fixed on the creatures.

That was all his family knew.

As far as Harlan, Marta and the others were concerned, the slimes were strange but unusually intelligent creatures that had taken a liking to James. They knew the slimes listened when he spoke and followed his instructions, but they had no idea why.

They did not know about the translucent screens that appeared before his eyes.

They did not know the system had given him the Tamer class.

They did not know that the creatures had been magically bound to him the instant he touched the first one.

They simply thought the slimes liked him.

A blue window appeared in the centre of James’s vision.

[Collective coordination detected.]

[Subordinates independently interpreted assigned objective.]

[Basic strategic reasoning confirmed.]

James kept his face still.

No one else reacted.

Harlan continued watching the slimes, proving once again that the screen existed for James alone.

The message faded.

James looked at the first slime he had tamed.

It bounced out from the crowd, moving with a self-assurance the others seemed to recognise. James had started calling it Bob, mostly because giving such an ordinary name to a magical creature amused him. Bob was slightly larger than the others, though whether that was natural or simply pride swelling his body, James could not say.

Bob stopped several feet in front of him.

“You found something?”

The slime bounced.

“And you came back for the others without me telling you to?”

Another bounce.

“You understood there was too much for five of you to carry?”

Bob quivered enthusiastically.

James rubbed a hand over his mouth.

“Holy shit.”

Behind him, Harlan cleared his throat.

“You’re talking to it now?”

“He understands me.”

“That doesn’t mean it can answer.”

Bob bounced twice.

James pointed at him. “That was an answer.”

His father gave the slime a long, doubtful look.

“Well,” Harlan muttered, “it listens better than your brother.”

An offended protest came from behind Marta, but James barely heard it.

He was still watching Bob.

The slime had not merely followed an order. It had understood the purpose behind the mission, recognised that the original group lacked the capacity to complete it and created its own solution.

Then it had somehow explained that solution to the others.

James had thought taming meant control.

Now he was beginning to suspect it meant something far more complicated.

Bob puffed himself up.

Then he opened his mouth.

James blinked.

Until that moment, he had not realised slimes had mouths.

A wet, guttural retching noise came from somewhere deep inside Bob’s body.

Harlan recoiled. “What the bloody hell is it doing?”

Bob convulsed.

A gold coin shot from his mouth, struck the dirt and spun in a bright circle.

Everyone stared.
