So my wife and I had hired Braden, a contractor that had worked on remodeling our master bathroom as our handyman to get some other things done around the house. Apparently though, one afternoon while I was at work my wife Dawn had decided that in reward for his hard work up to this point that she’d pay him with pussy instead of cash.
So the day after is where this one begins.
So Friday evening Braden was due to be there again this time to finish up the doors and do any touch ups and then hang the new ceiling light in the dining room. He showed up just before 5pm that day and was able to get those things done pretty early in the evening. He then looked to Dawn and I for anything else that we were looking to have done, when he asked us about what was next.
Dawn said, “Well I think I want to get the living room and office painted next, and I have some outdoor cameras with lights installed.” She continued, “I already have the camera lights.” “What about the paint, how much do we need, and what time tomorrow can you come over?”
Braden looked at the rooms in question and said, “What color are you thinking for these rooms?”
Dawn answered back, “I don’t see why it has to be any different than what you painted in the dining room.” “As a matter of fact I think you have some paint left over from that, you can start with.”
Braden looked around to determine how much paint was needed, and let us know, “Ok you’re probably looking at another 3 gallons, but we’re going to need probably 2 gallons primer this time to put over the darker color here in the dining room.” He continued, “I am available this weekend, in fact I can be here tomorrow, say just after noon if that’s ok.”
Dawn looked at me and I nodded, as she told Braden, “That’s fine, we’ll pick up the primer and paint in the morning.” “Anything else you need?” She asked.
Braden thought for a minute and looked over the things that had been left in our house for the project he just completed, “Probably some more painter’s tape, and that should about do it.”
Dawn turned to me and said, “Ok we’ll get some tape, primer, and paint, in the morning before you get here.”
With that Braden packed up his things, he and Dawn discussed payment for the work done that evening and she gave him cash for his time.
The next morning we awoke earlier than normal for a weekend day, and headed to the big box store to pick up the paint, primer and tape.
Just after noon Braden pulled up and unloaded a few things from his car before coming to the door. I went to the door to let him in. He brought things into the dining room to stage for the living room and office paint.
He worked all day that Saturday on taping off the baseboards, removing the light switch cover plates, removing the cover plates to the electrical outlets, taped around the windows and began his painting of the office first. He worked all day and well into the evening having put the first coat of primer on all the walls within the office. About 9pm that evening he was finishing up for the day and asked if he could come back tomorrow to put a second coat of primer on the walls. Dawn and I looked at each other and agreed he could.
I asked, “What time are you thinking, about the same as today?”
Braden responded, “Yeah probably about the same time.” He continued, “Shouldn’t take me as long tomorrow since I don’t have to tape.”
With that we agreed, he’d be back tomorrow, and he began to pack up for the evening, speaking to Dawn about his cash payment for the day. She went upstairs to our safe to get his payment, handed him his money for the work and he left for the day.
After Braden left for the evening Dawn and I had a conversation about how much stuff she had for Braden to do, and how long it might take him to get them done. He still had to paint the office, paint the living room, put up the outdoor camera lights, and we discussed what else.
She said to me, “You know after tomorrow, he should be done with the painting of the office, and next week he can do the living room.” She continued, “We’re going to need to come up with some things if we don’t want to lose him.” She continued, “If we don’t keep him busy, he’s likely to move on to something else, or someone else’s work, we need to keep him, he’s cheaper than we can find out there.”
I agreed with her, and asked, “What else do we have for him though?” Then I said, “Well I know how you can keep him around, I’m betting he’s not getting from others what you gave the other day.”
She looked at me with a scowl, and said, “Is that what you want, do you want me to offer it up to him again? Did you like that or something?”
I responded, “Well tell me that isn’t true.” I continued, “Is that what you want? You want him to stick around doing things? But what you really want is for him to stick around and do you.”
Again the scowl on her face at that comment.
She started looking around the house, seeing if there were any projects that we had not started or completed as of yet, that Braden could finish up or go through the entire project.
She eventually found a few other handyman projects for Braden to complete. Dawn then returned to the dining room and started to apply some of the painters tape on areas that she thought needed some touch up or she had issues with that she wanted corrected.
She asked me what I thought about him painting the hallway upstairs as well as the walls at the stairs that lead up to the second floor, I thought why not, have him do it.
That next day, Braden again showed up just after noon to try to get the office finished off, but before that, Dawn had taken him upstairs to show him the hallway and the walls at the stairs that she wanted painted. He looked over the area and suggested that we’d need probably another couple of gallons of paint, and then asked, “Do you want the ceiling painted as well?”
Dawn responded, “Yeah why don’t we do the ceiling as well, give it a fresh coat.”
Braden agreed and told Dawn that we needed probably another gallon of that ceiling paint for that. They then came back downstairs and Braden began work in the office. He was finishing up much earlier than he had the day before, but again, he suggested it was due to the taping he had to do yesterday. About 5pm he started looking around to make sure he had covered everything and began packing up his things, cleaning the brushes, putting lids on the remaining paint.
By 6pm that evening he had left and Dawn was inspecting his work in the office, applying tape to areas that she thought might need a touch-up and turned to me and said, “Looks pretty good though, don’t you think?”
I agreed, it did look a lot better than it had, and said so, “Yeah I think it looks a lot better.” I then turned the conversation to what was next, “So is he coming back tomorrow for anything?”
Dawn said, “No he can’t make it tomorrow, he might be able to come on Tuesday, but it would be to remove the tape from the office, maybe some of the touch-ups in the dining room and office, if he has time.”
On that Tuesday, again, I had gone into the office, and half expected Braden to be there when I got home, he wasn’t. He arrived, within a few minutes of my arrival though, and started with exactly what my wife had told me. He began to remove the tape from the office area baseboards, and from around the windows, and then grabbed a small brush and with some of the remaining paint began his touch-up work in the dining room and office. After completing that, he was cleaning his brushes and packing his things up for the evening, pretty early, but he didn’t want to get started on anything else, fearing it might be really late by the time he finished it. So he said, “I’ll be back tomorrow evening, probably around the same time to start taping off the living room, if that’s ok?”
Dawn looked at me, I nodded, then she replied to him in the affirmative, “Shouldn’t be a problem, was the taping all you were going to do, how are we on paint?”
Braden looked at the paint cans, which there were a couple of empty cans, but he also had one that was not even opened, and another mostly full can, and then he replied to Dawn, “Should be good with paint, for the living room.” He then looked at the paint he had left for the ceiling, and said, “Yeah even for the ceiling.” He answered the rest of Dawn’s question, “Yeah I think taping is all I’ll be able to get done tomorrow, don’t want to get started on something and only get half way through it.” He continued, “I guess we’ll see how long it takes and that, but that’s the plan.”
On that Wednesday, I had once again gone into the office, while Dawn was working from home, I was running a bit late getting out of the office, and therefore a little later getting home. By the time I had arrived, Braden was already there. He had taped off the baseboards in the living room, around the windows, and the electrical outlets and he had removed all the switch plates and electrical outlet plates.
I could tell he had finished up his taping, and began to paint the living room, starting with the ceiling. I did not immediately see Dawn or Braden on the first floor though. Thinking back to a couple of days ago, I wondered if they were upstairs doing the same thing as last time. Just then Braden came in from the garage, he apparently had not opened the garage door but was out there doing some painting of some trim boards that Dawn had asked him to potentially install. After a couple of hours of painting he had finished for the evening and began to clean the rollers and paint pans. Started preparing to leave for the evening.
Braden then turned to us and stated, “I don’t think I’ll be able to get her tomorrow evening for enough time to get anything done, and Friday evening I won’t be able to make it, but should be available for Saturday, if that’s ok?”
Dawn said, “That’s fine, I’m guessing around noon like this past weekend?”
Braden answered, “Yeah should be around then.”
Dawn said, “How far do you think you can get on Saturday?”
Braden answered, “I should be able to get the ceiling finished, and probably first coat on at least one, if not two walls. We’ll have to see how far I get.”
My wife looked at me, and then headed upstairs to get some cash. Coming back downstairs she asked Braden, “So how much do we owe you?”
Braden answered, “Well 5 hours. So 125” and with that Dawn paid him the money writing out a receipt as she had done, when paying him cash.
As Braden was headed out the door after packing up, and cleaning up for the evening, Dawn said, “Ok see you Saturday then right?”
He responded, “Yep, see you Saturday.”
Dawn turned to me and said, “Hey what do you think about changing the baseboards from the cheap looking small baseboards we have to a nicer larger baseboard?”
I replied, “What do you want to do? I don’t care, if you want him to remove the old and put new in, that’s fine, although we probably should have had him do that before painting.”
She said, “I’m going to ask him what we need and that will be his next project.”
During Thursday evening Dawn made her way around the first floor putting tape again on spots that she determined were needing to be touched-up.
Saturday came and Braden showed up again, just after noon. I started with work outside, as the lawn had to be mowed, and it was a nice day. While I was out mowing the yard, Braden was working on painting the living room.
After I finished mowing the lawn, I went back inside, and asked if Dawn had asked Braden, or talked to him about the baseboards, she had not. She had made him aware of what the tape was for in some of the rooms and that’s what he was concentrating on getting cleared up before moving on to finish the living room.
Dawn then turned to Braden and asked him about baseboards stating that we’d like some additional impact, maybe a little larger baseboard. He agreed and thought it would look better, and then asked us if this was for the entire first floor, just certain rooms or even throughout the whole house, as we had smaller builder grade baseboards around the house. Dawn then turned to me and asked me, which I just shrugged as if I didn’t know, or didn’t care, and I said to her, “That’s up to you, but it might look a bit weird if we have nice big baseboards down here and upstairs the old ones.”
She agreed and told Braden that his next project for us would be to pull out our old baseboards and replace them with a larger more impactful baseboard, this would be throughout the house. Braden then said, “Ok, you’ll want to go to one of the hardware stores and pick out what you want, I’ll paint them and get them put up.” He went on to say, “You want them throughout right? Let me see how many of those you’ll need.” As he went around the house counting and measuring.
It took him a while as he was measuring trying to get the numbers right and told Dawn how many he thought we should start with, and advised they’ll only come primed so if you want them painted a certain color you’ll want to pick that up as well.
After that detour to determine how many baseboards and paint would be needed Braden finished up the painting the touch-up spots that Dawn had taped on the first floor and was finishing up the living room, as it was getting late. He started cleaning up his brushes and rollers and began removing some of the tape from the office as well as the living room, and went over the areas that he thought he’d have to touch up later after allowing for some dry time.
He turned to us and asked, “So you want me to come back tomorrow to finish the rest of this up?”
Dawn answered, “Yes if you can, that way next week we can get you started on the baseboards.”
Braden then said, “Ok I should be here by about noon tomorrow and hopefully can get the rest of the painting done, I already gave you the number of boards you’ll need, when do you think you’ll have those?”
Dawn replied, “Well we’ll go either tomorrow after you leave, or Monday to pick them up, and grab some paint for them, so the latest would be Monday.”
Braden said, “Ok so I won’t plan on coming Monday, it’ll be Tuesday about 5 o’clock or so, sound good?”
Dawn replied, “Sounds good, what do we owe you?” This question was now a normal occurrence, and Dawn had earlier gone to the bank to get some additional cash in the house to pay Braden, as the arrangement again was that Braden would be paid for each days work in cash.
Dawn paid him and said, “See you tomorrow.”
Dawn went around again putting tape on fewer spots for touch up and then we relaxed for the rest of the night.
Sunday came and Braden once again showed up just after noon, upon arrival he said, “Shouldn’t be too long today, only have a few things to finish up, and I see some spots that need touch up, but shouldn’t take too long.” With that he was off to finish up the painting of the living room and the touch up spots that Dawn had taped throughout the first floor.
Braden worked for a few hours that afternoon on the touch up painting. By early evening he was already cleaning up his rollers and brushes, and was packing up his other tools getting ready to leave for the day. Dawn paid him and as Braden was preparing to leave she said to him, “Ok so we’ll see you Tuesday evening, right?”
Braden responded, “Yeah, I should be able to be here by about 5pm.”
This meant that we had to make it to the big box hardware store by no later than Tuesday morning to get the baseboards that Dawn wanted and some paint so that Braden could paint them.
So after Braden had left for the day Dawn and I headed to the big box hardware store and picked up the first set of baseboards, and a gallon of the paint that she wanted them painted. We purchased those and brought them home and set them into the garage so that Braden would have them available to begin painting them on Tuesday when we arrived that evening.
Monday evening we went back to the big box hardware store and picked up more baseboards, and brought them home and put them in the garage as well. We had now made two trips to pick up some baseboards, and we now had most of what was figured was needed.
Tuesday came, I went to the office and Dawn went out for a while working away from home, I saw on the alarm app that she got back home just after noon. I got busy with different things at work and was running late getting out, having to deal with a couple of incidents at work that kept us tied up most of the day.
Usually I’m out of the office by 4pm but as I looked at the clock in the lower right corner of my pc it was now just after 5pm and so I texted Dawn to tell her that I was still at work but would likely be leaving soon.
She texted back stating that Braden was there already painting some of the baseboards we had just purchased. I responded via text that I understood, I’d be home soon. Soon was relative as it took me about 30 minutes to drive home once I left the building, but I had not left yet. By the time I left the building it was almost 5:30pm making it almost 6pm before I made it home. When I arrived, the garage door was open, Braden’s car was in the driveway, and there were horses set up in the garage with a couple of the baseboards on top. Braden had started painting some of the baseboards.
I walked into the house and saw Dawn in the living room, and looked around to see if Braden was around, he was in the dining room removing some of the baseboards. I acknowledged his presence and he acknowledged mine.
He then said, “I started painting some of the new baseboards and letting them dry before I put them up. Don’t want to get paint from the baseboards on the walls.”
I acknowledged his statement, “Makes sense.” I then asked, “How long have you been here?”
He replied, “Since just before 5.”
He continued removing baseboards around the dining room. Then went out to the garage, presumably to continue painting some of the new baseboards. I went into the living room and sat down with Dawn.
About 9pm that night Braden came into the living room to let us know that he had most of the boards in the garage laid out to dry, most of them had been painted, and the dining room boards had been removed. He then says, “Tomorrow I can get started on getting the boards replaced.”
Dawn said, “Ok sounds good, what do we owe you for today?”
Braden responded, “Well about 4 hours, so, $100.” As he then began cleaning up his brushes and paint pan and packing away some of his tools, which he left in the garage.
Dawn went upstairs to retrieve some cash and handed it to him, asking again for him to sign a receipt, and then asked, “So you’ll be back tomorrow, about what time?”
Braden answered, “Probably about the same time as today, around 5.”
Dawn said, “Ok sounds good.”
With that he finished packing his tools away and closed the garage door, and left for the evening.
