It was a national conference of the clergy. It was hot and muggy, and everyone seemed to be on edge. Checking in was chaotic. Buses, taxis, and limos were pulling up to the hotel in an endless line. The lobby was noisy as hotel employees dealt with the sudden influx of guests. Bellhops were helping with luggage. The Concierge was trying to answer everyone’s questions. Desk clerks, checking people in, handing out keycards and room assignments. Long lines at the elevator.
Father Clark took it all in stride. It took him over half an hour to register and get his key card from the harried desk clerk. Rather than wait for the elevator, he took the stairs and walked up the five flights. After sitting on the plane and in the taxi, he felt he could use a little exercise. He put his key card in the slot to unlock the door and went in. He thought it was a nice room. There were two double beds, a desk, and a good-sized dresser.
An open suitcase was on the bed closest to the bathroom. Father Clark wondered who his roommate was. Just as he put his bag on the bed, the bathroom door opened. He turned and was about to introduce himself when his jaw dropped open as a handsome woman wrapped in a towel stood gaping at him, also looking surprised.
A very flustered Father Clark stammered, “I ... I’m ... I am so sorry.
The woman was the first to recover her wits. She backed into the bathroom, shut the door, and locked it. A frightened voice called out from behind the door, “There is money in my purse. Take it, take it all, and then, please, just go.”
I’m not here to rob you. I’m Father Clark. Obviously, there has been some mistake.
A much calmer voice answered, “Father Clark. Are you here for the conference?”
“Yes, of course. There has been some terrible mistake in room assignments.”
“Yes, there certainly has. Please turn around so I can get my robe. I can’t stay in here while we try to figure out what we will do about this situation.”
“I could wait in the hall, Sister.”
“No need. We are both adults. Just turn away from the bathroom door.”
“Okay, Sister, you can come out now.”
Father Clark heard the lock click.
Sister Jean peeked around the door before venturing out of the bathroom. She picked up her robe from the bed.
“I was supposed to room with Sister Abigale, but she caught the flu and had to cancel.”
“I was asked to attend at the last minute. The hotel must have assigned me this room because a bed was available, but they failed to check closely who my roommate would be. I’ll go down to the desk and straighten it out.”
Father Clark took the elevator down to the lobby. There was still a line at the desk. He looked around and saw the Concierge talking to two nuns. He walked over and put his hand on the Concierge’s arm, trying to get his attention away from the nuns, “I’m sorry, but there has been a terrible mistake that needs your immediate attention.”
The Concierge pulled his arm away. “I’m sorry, but it will have to wait. I have two very upset nuns that have lost their luggage. See me later. He went back to trying to calm the two weeping nuns. Father Clark didn’t envy him his job.
Father Clark went back up to the room and told Sister Jean that it would likely be very late before the lobby cleared, and he could get someone’s attention long enough to resolve their dilemma. I’ll try again a little later when things quiet down.
“I’m sure they will find a solution, Father.”
Father Clark sat quietly as Sister Jean bustled about unpacking and arranging her toiletries in the bathroom. Apparently, Sister Jean assumed that Father Clark would be the one moving out. Father Clark waited an hour and went back down to the lobby.
Father Clark spotted the Concierge checking a clipboard. He approached him and caught his attention, “I seem to have a bit of a problem. I need to be assigned a different room. And...
The Concierge quickly turned away to address a man wearing a black Cossack and red sash, “Ahh, Monsignor Ortega, the air-conditioning, yes, yes, I’ll take care of that right away. Sorry, Father, but no upgrades or ocean views available.” The Concierge rushed off, leaving Father Clark without a resolution. The desk clerks were still overwhelmed. Father Clark shook his head and took the stairs back to the room to tell Sister Jean he had failed again to procure a separate room. Much to his surprise, Sister Jean seemed resigned to her fate.
“Well, Father, I suppose we will have to make do for the night. There are two beds, so it could have been worse.”
Father Clark chuckled, “Yes, it could. I would be sleeping on the floor.”
Sister Jean snapped her fingers playfully and pointed at Father Clark, “Exactly. But it’s getting late, and I’m hungry. Would you mind escorting me to dinner since I don’t have Sister Abigale to accompany me?”
