Chapter 1: Bang, Bang, Bang

Drama Sex Story: Chapter 1: Bang, Bang, Bang - Katie is enjoying summer vacation at an Atlantic beach house with her boyfriend and fellow undergraduate Sam. Katie's host is the man she calls "Pops"—who helped raise her—and his voluptuous girlfriend April. Then April comes by their room, and Katie wraps her up in a huge hug.

I was drifting off to sleep when the headboard in the next room started banging rhythmically against the wall of our rented seaside house.

“Katie? Your not–parents are banging each other again,” I muttered, still drowsy and trying to sound casual.

“Yeah, isn’t it wonderful?” she said, brushing her hair back as she rolled toward me, beaming one of her 1,000–watt smiles I never could resist. I was alert now as she continued, her hand against my chest for emphasis. “I promise, Sam, if I heard them not banging, I’d be busting in on them demanding an explanation.”

“I wasn’t expecting so much enthusiasm.” I propped myself up on one elbow. “People our age are usually embarrassed to overhear their elders. But it’s something to do with them as not–parents?”

48731-1-ch-1-02-gouge.jpg“Yes, exactly. Sam, you’ve been careful to not quiz me on my past, but it’s only about 10 p.m. and I think you’re overdue for Katie’s wild history. I warn you, though, there are some really sad parts along with the good parts.”

“Am I one of the good parts?” The hope in my voice slipped out before I could stop it.

“You’re one of the best parts. You noticed how excited I was an hour ago when you were buried deep inside me.”

I said, “You did seem mildly pleased.”

“Sam, I need to be serious now.” Her voice softened, losing its sparkle. “I have a lot to get through, and some of it is even harder.”

“OK, I’m ready. Why don’t you explain why that busy man in the next room is ‘Pops’ but not your father?”

“He’s my legal guardian, and he started raising me when I was a little girl along with his wife, Claudia.”

“Claudia? Not April, who is enjoying your Pops as we speak.”

“That’s one of the sad parts of my history. Sam, I need you to put aside the humor and just listen. OK?”

“You’re right, Katie. I’m listening now...” I shifted upright, bracing my back against the headboard.

Sometimes I hide behind jokes, especially when facing difficult or uncomfortable truths coming right at me.

Katie took a deep breath, eyes flicking to the ceiling before she started explaining.

“Two years into their guardianship over me, Claudia died from cancer. You know, I still miss her. I was only 12.”

I took her hand, my thumb tracing the back of it. I wanted to comfort her but had no idea what to say.

“For years after that, Pops devoted himself to me. He didn’t date. Instead, he focused on getting me through puberty, high school, and now pre-med studies. That is where you and I met some months ago.”

“You’re not sad about me, then?”

“Of course not. Remember, I’m asking you to listen.

“Oh, yeah. I’m sorry, go ahead. Pops didn’t date until you went to college.”

“He didn’t. He was alone for about nine years, while just taking care of me...”

Katie trailed off, blinking fast as her tears brimmed.

“But now he has April, and they both ... Yeah, they’re making up for lost time. I want to make breakfast for them in the morning, and tell my Pops, ‘Attaboy,’ and high-five April. I swear, since she came into his life, he’s reverse-aging. He gives her all the credit, and he might be right.”

“Katie, if that formula is correct, we’ve already had enough sex to send me back into puberty. If you saw me with full-blown acne, you’d run away screaming in horror.”

“Foolish boy, you have nothing to worry about. I’d just put a paper bag over your head and still ravish you.”

“OK, we’ve gone into a diversion here. Why did Pops get guardianship over you?”

“Again, it was Pops and Claudia. In hindsight, I don’t think the courts would have allowed a single man to raise a little girl. Claudia, though, was devoted to me, and that tipped the balance.”

All I could do was listen while Katie explained.

“The real reason for the guardianship was this. While she was alive my mother had signed some papers giving them partial legal custody over me. Why? Because she was working a job that required a lot of travel, and I was already going next door to Claudia’s kitchen after school.”

Pops and Claudia were involved so early in Katie’s life!

“Let me guess—Claudia baked for you nonstop, and you were getting pudgy,” I said, already regretting the words as they left my mouth. I rubbed the back of my neck. Another dumb joke. What was wrong with me? I took a breath and tried to reset.

“Yeah, Claudia would bake until she got too sick to continue. I tried to help Pops take care of her, but she, uh, the cancer was (sniffle) quick. So quick!”

Just listen to her, Sam. Let her talk.
