Chapter 7
Robert’s phone rang, and he took the call without checking the screen. He had offered a reward for any information about his son’s whereabouts.
“Hello?” he asked, out of breath.
“Hello Robert, it’s Benjamin, your son,” the boy’s voice was cold as ice.
“Benji? Oh, my God, Benji! Thank God you’re okay! I’ve been so worried! Where are you? Why did you run away?”
“I’m here with my mother, Father,” the boy spat the last word. “You know, the one you and Grandpa told me was dead. Guess what? She is alive!” sarcasm was dripping from every word the boy said.
“Your mother? No, no, no! Benji, listen to me carefully, this can’t be true. Your mother is dead. Whoever you are with, she’s an impostor. Is she asking for money? Did she contact you with a cockamamie story? That’s why you ran away?”
“Liar! Liar! Liar!” Benji screamed at the phone. “You’re nothing but a liar! My mother, Janice Cooper, is in front of me right now. She looks exactly like the photos of her you keep on your desk and your night table. She told me what you and Grandpa did to her. How you forced her to give up her right to me! I hate you and I hate Grandpa for what you did to her! I hate you, I hate you, I hate you!”
Janice placed a hand on her son’s back and rubbed it gently trying to calm him down.
“Benji, please, wait a minute! I have no idea what you’re talking about. Are you sure the woman you are with now is your mother?”
Janice, who had been listening to the whole conversation on the speaker, leaned down and said, “Hello, Robert. Remember me? Janice? The girl you used and dumped when you knew she was pregnant? The woman you said you loved and then sent your father to kick her out of your life? The woman you and your father stole her baby from?”
Robert recognized Janice’s voice immediately. It was imprinted in his brain. Her voice was still as sexy as a saxophone in the night.
His heart skipped a beat. Benji was telling the truth. Janice was truly alive!
Robert took a while to get his mind around the fact. His heart was thumping fast in his chest.
“Janice! Oh my God! It’s really you! You’re alive! But, how−? My father told me you were dead! When you disappeared, I looked for you everywhere. I thought I was going crazy. Dad even hired a PI to find you. Then, some months later, they called me from a private clinic, and told me you had died giving birth to our son...”
Janice frowned.
“Really, Robert? Are you telling me that you believed that I was dead? What about my dead body?”
“Of course, I did! They said you wanted to be cremated. They gave me a box with your ashes.
“I loved you with all my heart, Janice. I couldn’t understand why you ran away from me. We were in love. We were going to marry. I thought you might have had an accident and lost your memory. Or that hormones scrambled your mind ... or ... I don’t know ... This is crazy!”
Robert felt like crying and screaming at the same time.
Janice leaned down, and said, “I thought we were good, too; ‘til your father came to me one day and threatened to make my life a living hell if I didn’t sign over my parental rights to Benji. He told me he was acting on your behalf. He said to me that you never loved me and everything we lived together was a lie! According to your father, you only wanted me as a mistress. He said I ruined everything by getting pregnant and going after your money...”
On the other side of the line, Robert was pulling his hair out.
“No, no, no, no ... This is crazy! This has my father’s fingerprints all over it. He’s a devil in disguise! Janice ... Please, listen to me, nothing of what my father told you is true. Oh my God, this can’t be happening!”
