Chapter 6

How much?” Alistair Campbell asked Janice.

How much what?”

How much money do you want to give up your rights to your baby?” Robert’s father asked.

Janice gasped at him. “Are you trying to buy my baby? Do you think that I am the kind of woman that would sell her baby for a few thousand?”

I was thinking more like a few hundred thousand.”

Janice’s eyes widened, “You’re insane.”

Alistair had come to talk with her as soon as Robert left to work on a case that would keep him away for the weekend.

Alistair studied Janice’s face. In the half-light of the hallway, he looked like a predator, and she was the prey.

Alistair realized he had been wrong about the girl. She wasn’t going after his money, after all. He decided to change his strategy.

I can offer your son a better life than you ever could. He’ll have everything money can buy. Best doctors, best schools, best opportunities ... he’ll grow up as a prince.”

Alistair let his words sink in and added. “What kind of life can you offer to your baby? A single mother from a backwater town, with no job, no friends, and no family to support her.”

Janice looked at him in surprise.

Yes, I’ve done my homework, Ms. Cooper.” And he added, in a low creepy voice, “Or should I say, Queen of Mean?”

Janice shook her head, fighting the tears. A great sadness seized her as her past as a bully came back to haunt her.

If you’re smart, you’ll take my offer. You won’t like the alternative. I’ll have social services on your back every day, and in the end, I’ll get the baby for free. I’ll fight you every step of the way. I don’t need to remind you that I own one of the biggest law firms in the country. Money won’t be a problem.”

Janice gulped. She knew it wasn’t an idle threat.

Robert won’t let you ... He loves me. He’ll fight you,” she said between tears.

Alistair laughed an evil laugh. She could tell looking into his eyes that he wasn’t amused. “Did you really think that Robert was madly in love with you?”

Janice nodded.

Did you believe that my son was going to marry you?”

She nodded again.

He was looking for a mistress, my poor innocent child, not a wife.”

Janice shook her head, and whispered, “No, that’s not true.”

Alistair laughed again. “Men like Robert marry into money. What can a poor girl like you offer him? Did my Robert give you the ‘this is real love’ speech?”

Janice gulped hard. Her world was crumbling down around her.

Alistair arched a brow, and smirked at Janice, “I taught him well, didn’t I? The Campbells marry upper-class girls, and use scum like you for sex.”

I don’t believe you! You’re nothing but a liar! Bobby loves me! He truly loves me. I know he does,” Janice said, on the verge of tears.

Who do you think sent me here to settle this matter with you? You were nothing but good sex for him. This stunt you pulled getting yourself pregnant ruined everything. He doesn’t want a future with you.”

It was not a stunt! I know you’re lying! Robert loves me!”

You can think whatever you want ... We don’t believe in abortion so, Robert is willing to do the right thing and take the baby out of your hands. You’ll be free to live your life without the stigma of being a single mother. We are ready to make a very generous offer.”

No ... no ... no ... I won’t give up my baby. I’ll fight you!”

Alistair shrugged. “Well, I guess I’ll see you in court then, Ms. Cooper. You better get yourself a good lawyer.” He stood up. “Oh, I almost forgot...” He opened his briefcase and handed Janice a set of papers.

I don’t understand. What is this?”

This, my dear child, is a restraining order preventing you from having any contact with Robert, this apartment, his workplace, and my house.”

Silence grew between them. The only sound was her soft cries and the rapid beat of her heart against her chest.

He checked his watch. “You have two hours to vacate this place.”

Alistair turned around and walked to the door.

Wait...!” Janice called after him, between sobs.
