Chapter 22
As a rule, Janice didn’t look forward to the Christmas holidays. It always reminded her how alone she was.
Holidays with their festivities, frantic shopping, and extra dose of cheer were always especially hard on her. It made her long for what she didn’t have; a loved one, a family.
Her phone rang startling her.
“Hello, Mom?” Benji greeted Janice before she could speak. She would never get tired of listening to her son’s voice calling her mom.
“Hello, my beautiful boy, how’s everything going in New York?”
“Cold and boring. I don’t like it here, Mom. New York is too big of a city. I like Middletown best. Everyone stops and says hello there. I read the online edition of The Gazette, and I saw you are planning a lot of fun activities and events for the holidays.”
Janice chuckled, “We have events for every season in Middletown.”
“They look so cool, Mom! So different than here!”
“You have Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Benji.”
“Yeah, I know. Dad and I go there every year. It gets old, Mom. Listen, Dad wants to talk with you about something. Love you, Mom.”
Her son’s words were like music to her ears.
“Love you too, Benji.”
A different voice came through the line.
“Hi, Janice, I hope you’re doing well.”
“Hello, Robert, I am doing as well as I can be.”
“Am I correct to think that you have no plans for Thanksgiving?” Robert asked her.
“I invited Rain and Rolf to spend Thanksgiving with me. Remember my sister Rain? I also have a lot of events to cover for The Gazette,” Janice said, then regretted it. The last thing she wanted was to have Robert feel she was going to be busy. “Why do you ask?”
