Chapter 21

Robert sat down in his friend Dave’s living room. He was a well-known psychologist.

“I’m surprised you called me to talk, Robert,” Dave said, taking a gulp of his beer. “If this is about Melanie, don’t worry. We explained the situation to her. She is not mad at you.”

“Thank you, Dave,” Robert said, holding his beer in his hands.

“How are things with Benji’s mother?”

A wry smile flitted across Robert’s lips.

“I’m in one of those situations where I can’t tell between what is right and what is wrong”

“In some situations, listening to your heart is much more valuable than making decisions with just your head. What do your guts tell you?”

“I love Janice. I always did.”

“There you go.” Dave sipped another gulp of beer.

“But ... I have a son to consider. A son who has already had too many upheavals in his life. My main job is to protect Benji.”

“Do Benji and Janice get along well?”

“They do. Extremely well. Jan is amazing with him. You should have watched them playing piano together. All Benji says is ‘Mom this, Mom that.’” Robert actually smiled when he said that.

“Which is the problem then? Date Janice, rekindle your love, marry her, and give Benji a home with two loving parents, and maybe a baby brother or sister. Simple.”

Robert frowned at his words.

“What if things between us don’t work? What if we can’t rekindle what we had?”

“Stop right there, my friend. Stop the ‘what-ifs.’ You don’t know for sure what will happen in the future. There is a big chance that your relationship might work. You’re not exactly strangers.”

“But what if...?”

“There you go again,” Dave interrupted Robert. “You don’t know what will happen if you start dating Janice. You are scared, I get it. You’re worried about Benji. That’s normal. What would happen if things don’t work between you two?”

“It could damage my relationship with Benji,”

“Why?”

“He wants us to be together. It could be a traumatizing experience for him.”

“Traumatize? For Pete’s sake! I’m the shrink, not you. Your son is a resilient boy. He learned his grandfather was a bastard who deprived him of his mother, and he didn’t turn into a basket case or a serial killer. He traveled alone across the country to meet her. Stop using your son as an excuse to not face your feelings for Janice. Constantly imagining the worst-case scenario is called ‘catastrophizing.’”

“Well, I am a lawyer. I look at the worst-case scenario and worry about it even though I don’t expect it to happen. Sometimes fear is a friendly reminder you’re not ready for something.”
