“I can’t believe you’re actually going through with this.”
On the sofa, curled up and wearing one of Karl’s hoodies, Jessica glared at her boyfriend. She had been sulking for days, ever since he had told her about the job offer. Karl and his girlfriend had barely spoken about the plans for the house he had inherited — every conversation they had always seemed to devolve into having sex. But even if she hadn’t brought it up, Jess had clearly not changed her mind about what she felt was the best way forward. She either wanted Karl to sell his uncle’s cabin or to rent it out.
Moving up to the mountains permanently was not on her agenda.
It had been an ugly scene when Alisha had stopped by with the official offer. Jessica had not been ... hospitable to the attractive blonde. As for Alisha, she seemed almost skittish around Karl. They hadn’t been alone since that afternoon in her house a few days prior. She wasn’t avoiding him exactly, it was more like she was embarrassed. Karl wondered at how she could change her behaviour so quickly. She had been so bold at the time.
Not anymore. In fact, Alisha cast so many embarrassed looks Karl’s way that Jess’s eyes had started to narrow in suspicion. It had certainly made her jealously passionate — Jess had jumped Karl almost before Alisha had made it out the door. She’d certainly mounted him before the blonde had made it off the property.
But as the days had gone by, and Karl’s first day at his new job drew closer, Jessica’s mood had soured.
Karl sighed at his girlfriend as he finished tying his boots.
“Jess...”
“Don’t you ‘Jess’ me, Karl. This isn’t what I signed up for. I came up here with you for a holiday. And now you’re going to work? I mean, what the hell?”
Karl thought of pointing out that it wasn’t a holiday, and that he’d never pitched it to his girlfriend as such, but he knew that wouldn’t go down well. Then he inwardly shrugged, and said it anyway.
“It’s not a holiday, Jess. It was to sort out my inheritance — you know that. And I view this as part and parcel to my uncle’s cabin.”
Jessica sniffed.
“You’re overreaching.”
“Come on, Jess. I can’t pass up this opportunity! Not when it fell into my lap like this. You’ve always believed in serendipity, haven’t you?”
Jessica waved her hand dismissively.
“Only for good things.”
“Isn’t this a good thing?”
Jessica looked away from Karl, glaring at the wall. Karl frowned himself. Gone were the days when he felt like he just had to take Jessica’s moods. His voice firmed as he looked down at his girlfriend.
“It is a good thing, Jess. Admit it. I have a house — and now a job! And it’s a better paying one than the one I had back home. If it works out, and I can make it stick ... things are looking up. So why are you acting so pissy?”
Jessica’s shoulders had begun to slump in resignation as Karl spoke, but her head snapped around to his at the last comment. She gave him an outraged look.
“I am not pissy!”
Karl sighed in exasperation. Jess had been all over the place the past few days. Even if he understood some of it, it still made his head spin. She’d been angry and annoyed by turns. Trying to punish him with the silent treatment, and then acting all kittenish with him. Like she just couldn’t keep her hands off of him no matter what her mood.
But Jess was still his girlfriend and he did love her. So Karl tried.
“Look, sorry — I shouldn’t have said that. But we only have two weeks up here, and most of the first week has already gone. Before I make a decision I’m going to see this through, see how it goes. Alisha was kind enough to give me a one week trial — with the option to make it permanent after. I can’t pass this up.”
Jessica huffed out a frustrated breath.
“I don’t know why she’s going to so much trouble for you.”
“Can’t someone just be nice, Jess?”
Karl’s girlfriend rolled her eyes in derision.
“Please. I saw how she was looking at you. Strutting around in that tight skirt with her fat ass. She’s just trying to get into your pants. God knows why.”
“Wow. Thanks, babe.”
Jessica flushed.
“I didn’t mean — I just —”
“Yeah yeah. Look, I gotta get going. I don’t want to be late.”
Jessica looked conflicted, guilty. She still tried one last thing though.
“But what am I supposed to do? You’re taking the truck, so I’m just stuck here.”
Karl looked over his shoulder at Jess as he put on his coat.
“It’s not that far into town. You liked that cafe I took you to. Just ... relax! I only have the one job lined up for today, so I should be back by early afternoon.”
Jessica crossed her arms, not looking all that appeased.
“Why only one job? Hardly worth it.”
Karl just shrugged.
“I’m on retainer, not getting paid by the job. And I think Alisha is making the first week easy. Nothing too frantic so I’m more likely to stay.”
Jessica’s face had darkened when he brought up Alisha again, but she didn’t address it.
“I can’t spend the whole day at a cafe, Karl. I can’t believe you’re doing this to me.”
Karl stopped, and stared at the ceiling for a long moment. Then he turned around, crouching down in front of his girlfriend. Karl cupped her chin in one hand, tilting her face up to him. He felt Jessica shiver in his grip, and she leant into his hand. Karl’s dick throbbed in his pants, like it had been doing ever since he arrived here in Bracken Ridge. It was a struggle not to just scoop Jessica’s slender form into his arms and carry her up to the bedroom. Only the fact that he had a job waiting stopped him.
“Hey now. This is good, Jess. For the both of us. No rent means more money! Tell you what, why don’t you have a look around town, see if you can find anyone hiring. I know you don’t like your job at the store in the city. You might find something better, you never know.”
Jessica licked her lips, her eyes half closing as she sat still in Karl’s grasp. Her voice sounded weaker than before, but she still tried.
“I don’t want to work in a hick town like this —”
Karl spoke firmly over the top of his girlfriend.
“Jess, it’s a resort town. If anything, it’s over-gentrified.”
“ ... whatever.”
Karl shook Jessica’s head gently. He felt a surge of power at treating her like this, but he kept it off of his face. Karl had never imagined he could act this way with his girlfriend. He always thought she’d kick him in the balls if he tried.
“Tell me you’re at least going to look into it. Promise me.”
Jessica’s eyes flickered, but then all the fight went out of her. She hesitated, then just muttered.
“ ... fine. I will. I ... promise.”
“That’s my girl. Anyway I better run. I’ll see you later!”
Karl kissed the crown of Jessica’s head and then headed out. Yes, he was very much enjoying the new Jess. And she seemed be getting better every day.
As Karl drove through the quiet roads on the way to first job, he kept an eye out. He hadn’t told anyone about his nearly being run over — and he wasn’t entirely sure why. Karl rationalised it after the fact, reckoning that it had just been some random and inattentive driver — maybe a tourist. Hell, they might not have even realised that they had hit him! Somehow he couldn’t parse the idea that someone had intentionally tried to run him down. It had to have been an accident.
Karl was still wary though. He’d had a massive bruise on his hip where the car had clipped him, as well as a matching one where he had slammed into that tree. Jessica had certainly been alarmed. They had faded though, faster than Karl had expected, leaving only a faint greenish discolouration now. A good thing too, as Karl wouldn’t have enjoyed doing anything physical for work if he had been as battered as he’d feared.
There had been no more run ins with Jasper either. Karl would have brought up the old caretaker with Alisha, but she had leery of being alone with him. In the end Karl had been left with nothing but questions. It would have weighed on his mind but ... he’d been distracted.
It was hard to dwell on anything when sex with his girlfriend was always on offer. Karl had felt like all he had to do was crook his finger at Jess and she would immediately strip. In fact, he had tried that. She hadn’t taken her clothes off but, after a moments hesitation, she’d walked over and settled onto Karl’s lap, straddling him.
Also, Karl hadn’t been sleeping all that well. He’d been having ... vivid dreams.
Before Karl realised it, he had arrived at his first job. He actually knew the person who lived at the old-styled cottage — it was Alisha’s friend, Amanda. Karl had wondered if Alisha had pulled some strings, either to make his first job easy, or to give her friend preferential treatment.
Karl parked his truck, and walked up to the front door. He consulted his paperwork. It wasn’t anything too major, just general maintenance. The kind of thing that homeowners could do themselves, but either didn’t have the time or inclination for it. Karl knocked on the door.
The door swung open, and Karl found his hand being vigorously shaken by a hearty-looking bear of a man.
“Karl, right? Amanda told me she’d arranged for you to come round. Nice to meet you!”
